Gustav Ellison from Norway, in Clark in 1910

I'm hoping for some help on finding more information about Gustav Ellison, b. 6th of June 1887, on the farm Klubben in Froya (outside Trondheim) in Norway. He arrived in NY 1903 to go to his brother Anton Ellison in Hennepin, Minnesota. I think it's him I've found written as Gust Ellison in Deer River, Itasca, Minn. in 1905 census and as Guo/Gus Ellison in 1910 cesus, Vancouver Ward 2, Clark. In 1910 he has also written a naturalization application in Clark, all the information on that form is correct but the birth year, it's written as 1878 instead of 1887.
After that I can't find anything on him, can you help me?

Hi,

I have an article from page 1 of The Columbian (Vancouver, WA.) about the incident, which states that it was witnessed by 9-year-old Ranny Ullrich, son of Ernest. Later issues I found death notices for both Ruby and Ernest, and then later a funeral notice for Ernest (who was buried in Park Hill Cemetery in Vancouver). Ruby's body was shipped to West Union, Ohio. The page 1 article (which includes 2 photographs) states they were married around June 1 of that year.

Please provide a USPS address and I'll mail these to you at no charge.

Jeff in Portland, OR.
jeffreylelmer @ yahoo.com

John E Carter was my 1st cousin thrice removed, born Iowa 1865. He married Laura Percy in Idaho and moved to Vancouver by 1910 census. I have found them in 1920 and 1930, and am looking for them subsequent to that time, as well as any descendants who might be interested in the family history I have put together.

Children:
Ralph Edward Carter b Idaho 1897 married Nell Wilson (possibly in Portland ca1923-24). Ralph was mayor of Vancouver, prob. 1952-56, and a dentist. Children (initials only since they might still be living) D.G (dau - married JE Keller 1950) and D (son).

Alta L. b Idaho 1900 married George Jacob Fernea in Vancouver in 1928. Fairly unique surname.

Claude Harold b Washington 1909 married Mary E. Langford 1938. Enlisted for WWII in Portland 1942 and was possibly a pharmacist (lived in Multnomah County?).

I do have burials for John, Laura, and Ralph at Park Hill Cemetery.

Any descendants out there?

Nick

I found her obituary. It doesn't contain much. But it appears that she was buried at Chris Zada Cemetery in Underwood, Wash. and according to their web site: http://files.usgwarchives.org/wa/skamania/cemeteries/zada.tx...
- she was married in Spring 1927 to I believe - Aubrey F. Houston who was born 1903-1978.
This is the obituary from the Columbian newspaper, Vancouver:
Lyola Houston

Vancouver

A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. today at Chris Zada Cemetery in Underwood, Wash., for Lyola Houston, who died Thursday, July 3, 2003, in Vancouver.

She was born Feb. 23, 1908, in Ravenna, Mich., and lived in Vancouver for about two years.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association; Promoting Responsible Ownership of Dogs and Cats; or Hospice Southwest, all in care of Gardner Funeral Home, P.O.

Exactly three years to the day after suffering a medical condition that significantly affected her health and changed her way of life, Lorraine Rose Gilberg went to be with our Lord in Heaven on October 30, 2008 at the age of 82.

Lorraine was born in Winner, South Dakota, to Leo and Rose (Angel) Fuhrer. In 1943 Lorraine moved with her mother and her brother, Kenneth Fuhrer, to the Pacific Northwest. Lorraine graduated in 1944 from Port Angeles High School. Shortly thereafter Lorraine went to work in Seattle, Washington, with the Metropolitan Insurance Company where she worked for 18 years. At the same time, Lorraine also worked as a part-time model. While living in Seattle, Lorraine met her future husband, Jack D. Gilberg. They were wed at St. James Church in Seattle on September 1, 1956. For reasons of employment, Jack and Lorraine moved to Portland, Oregon and finally settled in Vancouver, Washington, where she was to reside for the rest of her life.

Lorraine will be remembered as a devoted wife, a proud mother of her three sons Jay, Kevin, and Tim, and a wonderful friend to many. Coming from a very humble and modest background, Lorraine had the wonderful ability to be both empathetic and loving towards everyone she met. In addition to her interests in gardening, golfing at Royal Oaks Country Club, and caring for her family, Lorraine also made time to help raise money for the Ann Tilson Orthopedic Children’s Hospital Guild. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where she faithfully attended for over 50 years. Moreover, Lorraine often remarked that her greatest accomplishment was raising her three boys.

There will be a Mass held at St. Joseph’s Church Catholic Church at 11:00 am on Thursday, November 6, 2008 in celebration of Lorraine’s life with a luncheon reception to follow. For those who are interested, there will be a Rosary said at 10:00 am prior to the Mass. Remembrances may be made to the Ann Tilson Guild Children’s Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box C5371, Seattle, Washington, 98105.

Brown’s Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Camas has been entrusted with the arrangements

Need to jump in here, just found these messages. S. A. D. or Stephen Aaron Douglas McCann is my great-grandfather. He was born 12 April 1855 in Illinois. I believe father was Hamilton McCann, still working on that one. S. A. D. was married 3 times: first to Morning Orlena Ham on 15 Mar 1879 in Jefferson County, Ill., second to Martha E. Martin (my great-grandmother) on 29 Oct 1892 in Washington. They had 4 girls then 2 boys. They divorced in 1906. Married third to Josephine Reeder. He died in 1927 and she in 1935 and they are buried together in Park Hill Cemetery in Vancouver, WA. As far as I know Stephen had no children with Orlena or Josephine. The Robert listed in the census with Stephen and Josephine is the son of Stephen, youngest brother to my grandmother. He was born in 1906. Hope this clears up some of your questions.

Obits weren't that common in the 1920s, but you can request a free lookup from the Wash. State Library. Here is their contact info:

Yes, we will do free obituary lookups! You can request an obituary by email (askalibrarian@secstate.wa.gov), or by email form, chat, telephone, or by mail--see all our contact information at
http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx

Our newspaper collection mostly covers Washington state and some of the Portland area. We ask that you provide us with as much information as possible in terms of date of death, place of death, and place of residence, if known. We prefer at least a ten year range for date of death and
county of death and/or residence if known.
Hello,

Am hoping a kind soul might be able to help with my request. I'm looking for an obit for Charles Lewis Getman, b Oct 29 1873 Eyota , Olmsted Co MN; died Apr 19 1920 Vancouver, Clark Co WA. He was survived by wife Nettie Winsor Getman and several children. Are there any newspapers for Vancouver, Clark Co in 1920?

He's buried in the Park Hill Cemetery. According to cemetery records, he was buried by Limber's Funeral home.

Can anyone please tell me if Limbers is still in business today? I tried to Google it, but nothing substantive came up.

Thanks for any help.

Colleen Lill
Alberta Canada

I found an article about Henry's court martial on the back of a recipe/newspaper clipping; it was in an old cookbook of my grandmother's. I know this sounds strange, but I wanted to know how it all turned out for Henry & his family. The article said he was supposed to be hanged for refusing to drill. It appears from the other posts you received here that it was changed to life in prison. WOuld you mind telling me how it all turned out? I would behappy to mail you the newspaper article. Thanks.
my grandmother lived in MN all her life. The article is short, so I'm sut sure there is anything to help you, but you never know. Remember, this piece of paper was in her cookbook for all these years--she tore it out for the recipe, and when I was going thru the book, I found it and turned it over, and was absolutley fascinated with the story, I could not imagine a soldier being hanged in America, so I am glad he only served 5 years. Thanks for completing the story for me,I will drop the clipping in the mail to you tomorrow. It makes it tough when family members keep secrets, I totally understand your frustration, we have a similar situation in my husband's family, and it makes it tough to do research. Good luck with your search. What a colorful ancestor to have! Kate in MN

Re: 1945 Court Martial

Hi Kate,

From what I've been able to ascertain, Hank ended up spending 5 years at Ft. Leavenworth. The marriage ended up in divorce. He died in 1994 in Vancouver. I learned about the court-martial after my mother died in 2000. Among her letters that she had kept was once from 1945 from a friend expressing empathy for the family. When I wrote my Aunt Grace about this, she had fits that Mom had even kept the information. Grace wanted me to destroy the letter, which, of course, I didn't. This episode was in newspapers and magazines across the country. I'm still trying to find information on his ties to the Socialist Labor Party that he and my grandfather were part of. They were railroad men, and in that era, it was not uncommon for them to organize.

I would very much like to have the article. Was your grandmother from the Vancouver area? If so, what was her name? I might recognize names of family friends.

Address
Julia Krapfl
21326 Hwy 136
Cascade, IA 52033

There were newspapers in Clark County in 1920, but availability on microfilm at the Ft. Vancouver Regional Library are "hit & miss" for this early. Also, obituaries were not in a neat section like they are today, but are sprinkled throughout the paper. The good news is that the papers weren't as large as they are today, so not so many pages to search through.

I will be in the area of FVRL later this week and if I have time, will stop in and look, if no one else has found an obit by then.

Limbers is no longer in existence, but I cannot remember which of today's funeral homes might have their records, if any.

Colleen,
Here is a link to CCGS (Clark County Genealogical Society). They have a lot of information of Clark County Washington.
http://www.ccgs-wa.org/
I can tell you that there are no Getmans in the Clark County Pioneers book that they have. I have a copy and I looked for the surname and couldn't find it at all in the index.
If you would like I could check my copy of the Park Hill Cemetery and get you the information there. I have those volumes as well as I have many ancestors buried there and in Memorial Gardens.

There is also a mention of Mrs C. L. Getman in an obit for her brother on page 2+3 at this link (in PDF format)
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~waclacem/ParkHill/phob1829....
Jean
I'm related to the Robinson and Eaton pioneer families thru my Grandmother Ethyle Taylor Oyster (1897-1971)...

John Robinson & Margaret Ann Eaton's family appear to have migrated to Washington Territory from Iowa prior to 1860 via wagon train(s)....Both John & Margaret are shown in the Clark County 1860 Territorial census. The 1880 census showed them to reside in Cowlitz County.

Does anyone know where/who I might contact to get a history of the wagon train(s) they traveled with??? I assume the groups came to Portland or Fort Vancouver prior to going on to their respective settlements..

Thank you for any help rendered...

Carl Erlandson
Buckeye, AZ
