I'm looking for information on my family who settled in Mason County, WA. My Grandparents are Violet Keir and Elwood Frydenberg. Elwood's parents are Anna Miklethun and Claus Frydenberg. Claus and Anna came to Mason County from Griggs County, ND between 1910 and 1914. According to the Washington State birth index, their 3rd child, Lawrence O., was born in Mason County in 1914. I believe that several members of Anna's family (surname Miklethun) also came to Mason County from North Dakota but have been unable to form any connections with the many Miklethun names I have located buried in Shelton Memorial Park. Vi's parents are Rose Ribbans and Hendry Keir. They settled in Mason County approx 1929 from Kitsap County, WA. Rose's sister, Eva "Ribbans" Latzel, still lives in Mason County.

I am looking for information on my grandparents James Harry Stevenson and Lillian Case. My father was born on 29 May 1917 in Shelton Mason Wa. He was number 4 on his birth certificate. It lists my grandfather as a shingle mill owner would records from 1917 still exist for the business industry in Shelton? The only other thing I can think of is that we were raised Catholic so I am assuming that they were Catholic. Is there one or more parish's in Shelton? I am going to visit next week and wondered where to start to look for information. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You Tammy Vargas

Hello:
I am researching distant cousins & found some of them in the death index for Washington on Ancestry...I would like to know if there is somewhere to find the obits & the cemetery names (are they on-line, if so where?). I am looking for JohnF Bennett (died 23 Dec 1951) & wife Laura Taylor Bennett (died 30 Jan 1927) & 2nd wife Ruth Clark Bennett (died 9 Jan 1948). Can anyone advise me on the best place for more info about this family? John also had brothers & a sister in Shelton. Just found Ruth in SheltonMem-Masonic section from the link on this board... thanks for your efforts. I will check further for the others, but could still use help if you don't mind.
Dianna
I don't know if an obituary would even exist from this time period, but thought it was worth a try. I would appreciate any help that anyone has to offer, including just a clue to find out more information about where Maria might be buried.

She was born Oct 29, 1840 in Elkhart Indiana. She married Joseph Thomas and came west via Morris County Kansas. According to our family bible, she died in 1895 in "Union City". I know that the family lived along Hood Canal, so I'm thinking maybe "Union City" is "Union" near the south end of Hood Canal. Her husband is buried with his 2nd wife in Retsil - Veteran's Cemetery and lived in Port Orchard for many years.

Thank you, Barbara

Does anyone have access to the cemetery records for the cemeteries in Shelton? I would be more than happy to transcribe or put the information on the website as I am the host. All the cemeteries in Shelton are run by the cmetery association so one organization has the lists for all the cemteries in town. Please e-mail me at Kandgholland@attbi.com

Obituary - Eliab Dunbar

from "The Mason County Journal" of Friday, July 31st, 1896, Shelton, Mason County, Washington:

Eliab Dunbar gone.

Shortly after noon, Monday July 27th Eliab Dunbar peacefully passed away, after an illness of several months, from heart troubles. For the past week he had been failing, and his death was expected. Although 69 years of age, and broken in general health by war service, he has been quite strong until last January; since when he has been mostly confined to his home.

Eliab Dunbar was born in Cattaraugus County, N. Y., in 1827, but most of his life has been spent in Michigan until eight years ago, when he came to Mason county and has since made Shelton his home. As a builder he was an expert workman, and Shelton has many specimens of his work in her buildings. He leaves an aged wife, and two grown sons, the latter being in Michigan, also a step son, Ralph Potts, and two brothers, W. H. and Chas. Dunbar, who reside in Shelton with their families. Eliab Dunbar served his country for 4 1/2 years in the civil war and also his son, who enlisted at the age of thirteen years, and was one of the youngest in the service.

The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon under the direction of Col. E. E. Cross Post No. 90, G. A. R. of which the deceased was a member. Rev. F M. Wheeler preached the funeral service at the home, and Com. J. B. Ritner read an impressive Grand Army ritual service at the interment in the I. O. O. F. cemetery. The funeral services were attended by the many relatives and friends of the family, and comrades, to pay their last respects of the deceased. The family desires to thank the kind friends who performed the services that tended to lighten the illness of the deceased and relieve his sorrowing wife, and for flowers and other attentions shown during the funeral.

JUST, Fred, obituary

The Goldendale Sentinel, Goldendale, WA., August 18, 1921, page 1
"County Correspondents Send In News"

We are indebted to Mrs. Brumm, of Seabeck, for the following the details regarding the accidental death of Fred Just:

Fred was working in a logging camp about five miles from Seabeck, his work being to saw wood for the engine. Just as he was sawing the last block of a large log that lay near the spar tree where all the cables are fastened, a cable tore loose up about 140 feet from the ground, striking Fred on the side of his head as it fell, fracturing the skull. This occurred about 11:30 o'clock on Saturday, July 30. He was rushed to the hospital at Bremerton about 18 miles away, where he passed away at 7:20 o'clock that evening without ever regaining consciousness. Burial took place in the little cemetery at Seabeck. His resting place was covered over with many beautiful floral tributes brought by host of friends. Services were conducted by Mr. Kelly of Silverdale, and Mr. Bassett, of Crosby. This sunny-faced lad, whom everyone loved, will long be missed by those who knew him. He would have been 18 years of age on Oct. 24.

This was posted for reference only. I am not related to, nor am I researching this family. If you have additional information about the family or event listed above, please post it as a reply to this message.

Seaching for any information or connections with other BARBER'S from the Shelton area. My grandfather Jack G. BARBER b. 1909 TX, arrived in the Olympia/Shelton area around 1911. He was raised by his Uncle George L. BARBER b. NY and his mother Alice BARBER b. 1882 NY (Alice had been previously married to George's brother Edward). Apparently George was employed by the Superior Logging Co.
I would like to know if there were any other BARBER'S that lived there or moved there with them.
Thank you, Noel

I have a 1930 annual from the Chemawa Indian School in Oregon. It had belonged to Alex L. Gouley and I would like to return it to someone in his family. There is also a studio picture of Alex; a card he sent to his mother & a couple of other pictures. I just want to be reimbursed a bit to pay my expenses in getting it plus mailing it. I received it in a box of photos and other information on some members of my family including Ross, Hardy, McKee, Wigginton, Quackenbush, Dimick, Lovering and Knaar.

I found the death of this Alex L. Gouley in Sept 1971, Shelton, WA; Alex L. Jr. died 5 Jan 2001, also in Shelton. There are 10 Gouley's listed in the phone book and I'd like to be able to contact the right one! Could someone just tell me the survivors listed in both of their obits? Thanks for your help.

Cleve HAUPTLY in Union, WA -- Mason Co.?

I was looking through the Friday, 28 Dec 1934 issue of The Fayetteville Enterprise of Fayetteville, GA (Vol. VI, No. 43, pg. 3) this morning on microfilm (I live in the Covington area near Kent in King Co.) and this little article caught my eye. I'm not certain if this town of Union is the one in Mason or Clark Co., since it doesn't specify, but I thought I'd post it in case it might be of help to anyone:

Union, Wash. --- Cleve Hauptly's effort to save the three-volume manuscript diary of his father, early Washington pioneer, cost him his life. He kept the diary under the counter of his store, would let favored customers read it. When a night fire flamed through the building Cleve Hauptly dashed into the store to save his father's record of Washington's early days. He did not come back.

Wouldn't it be amazing to have that record today? <sigh> If you think this might be the right county, or are a descendant of Cleve Hauptly, I'd love to hear from you. I am not subscribed to the mailing list, so please email me at: mkozy@attglobal.net.

Thanks!

Mary Kathryn Kozy
Ogg Family in Mason County

Hello all,
I am researching the Ogg family from here in Mason County. Samuel Ogg settled here in the Dayton district back in 1888 and in 1891 married Ada D. Johnston. I have seen many of the census and have most of the vital statistics on them and their children, but I am looking for anyone out there who may have been friends or aquaintances of the family who can provide pictures, old stories, or just any information about the Ogg family here in Mason County.
I am putting together a detailed family book to pass on to my children and would like any detail on the family members I can get. I already have most of the obituaries so that is not an issue, just information and pictures. I will pay for any copies.
Thanks,
Stacy I. Ogg
P.O. Box 181
Shelton, WA 98584
siogg@yahoo.com

I am trying to locate the family members of a childhood friend of mine who died in 1952. I think Ronald Borns who lived in Hoodsport and died on 7 Mar 2000 may have been a brother. Ronald's birthplace should read possibly Stambaugh or Iron River, Michigan. Perhaps Ronald Borns has family still in your area. Many thanks for any information in advance!

I am looking for information about Fred L. and Phillip Ogg of Ellensburg, WA. They were brothers. They both worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad. Fred married a lady named Eva who was from a pioneer family of Ellensburg in about 1920. It was said Fred and Phillip were both stationed in Auburn, WA for awhile and that is where Fred died. Fred died on January 23, 1936 his wife Eva died on Sept. 10, 1947 they are both buried in Ellensburg, WA.
Some census records show Phillip living with a Lucy C. Ogg. I am curious to find out who she is also.

Fred and Phillip's uncle Samuel C. Ogg lived in Shelton, WA. I am looking to find more info. about this connection if anyone out there knows anything.
Stacy Ogg
Shelton, WA

Isak Johan Artur LUNDBERG was born 1890 in northern Sweden. His parents were Erik Anton LUNDBERG and Maria Wilhelmina ENSTROM. Johan came to the US 1910/1911 and married a Swedish girl named Hanna. Johan also started to use the name John. I found them on 1920 census in Mason Co, CO with a son named John.
Johan's older brother Erik Botvid LUNDBERG remained in Sweden and was my grandfather. I would love to know more about Johan and his life in the US.

Actually...I'm looking to buy a map which will show details of
Kamilche Point, 2 or 3 miles southeast of Shelton. In
particular, I'm looking for what was known as "Rollaway"
or "Rolliway" or even "Rollway". It seems logical that this
was a place where logs were rolled off a train car into
the water, for shipment elsewhere.

That's the must. However, any detailed map of this
area from about 1895 to 1925 is desirable.

Good copy is fine, even a good scan. Originals fine too.
