Hi - If this person's prisoner file exists you should be able to get a copy, provided the state's privacy rules permit it. For instance, you might have to show proof of death before the state will release it. Contact the State Archives to find out what you need to do, and have everything you know about this person ready to give to the staffer who answers:

360-586-1492

Or e-mail: research@secstate.wa.gov

Washington state is one of the states using the Digital Archives feature to allow people to search state and territorial records for free. Unfortunately the Walla Walla Penitentiary records are only loaded up for 1887 - 1922, so searching this site online won't give you the case or inmate file number you need. But if you need a death record and don't already have one, this site is worth checking out. Not all counties in WA have deposited their full records for digitization - this is still an ongoing project. I find I get more useful results with this site when I use surnames only:

http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/

In my experience so far, prison and reformatory records are never found in relation to any county's genealogical or historical resources. They are with the state or federal archives. In WA even old county jail records have been requested by the state archives.

An inmate file, if you can get it, should tell you quite a bit about the person you're looking for - it should include records of all the visitors she had, plus all the correspondence in and out, which lets you know who kept in touch and who didn't. It should also show all correspondence within the prison between the inmate and the superintendent, doctors, etc. And of course you'll get the actual intake and discharge dates, if you don't already have them.

If she was released, you may also get all the monthly probation or parole reports she sent back for another year or two, however long she was directed to do so as a condition of release. These can show a lot about where she lived, worked, how much she earned and sent to a parent, etc. In my experience so far, inmate files have also contained letters from friends and former employers giving character references and offers of employment upon release. That, I suspect, kind of depends on who was out there advocating for the incarcerated person, such as a dedicated relative or a good lawyer.

Good luck. If nothing else I would contact the penitentiary directly:

1313 N 13th Ave
Walla Walla, WA 99362-8817
(509) 525-3610

Good luck!

Re: Everett George Cummings

I "thought" I had posted this the other day...

I looked for other postings to see if you had more information on these names; but it appears this is your first posting. When you post an inquiry, it is SOOOO very important to fully identify who you seek. Their dates of birth are ALWAYS great for a researcher to have. Otherwise, approximate dates, parents names, siblings, where they were born, where they died. For this search I started with Everett George Cummings. Then looked for an Almira Temple, only to find several of them. But, as it turns out Almira wasn't Grandma Temple, she was grandma Cummings. Only after looking in the Washington Death Certificate Index did I start to see who you were seeking. Also when you post, identify what you ALREADY know. You may have everything I posted below, or none.
Here is a "guide" to posting an inquiry:
http://www.tedpack.org/goodpost.html

The Washington Death Certificate Index:
--An Almira Temple was identified as being the mother of William Orrin (as spelled) Cummings on his death certificate. He died on 1 Feb 1925 in Colville, Stevens County, WA, age 72 years and 8 days (about January 23rd, 1853). He was buried on 6 Feb 1925. His wife was Harriet Reynolds. His father was Geo. J. Cummings.
--An Almira Temple was shown as mother on the death records of Mary Douglas, Mary died 21 May 1958 in Walla Walla at age of 98 years, 9 months and 6 days. Her father was George Cummings.
--An Everett G. Cummings was identified as being the husband on the death certifcate of Syliva (as spelled) Bell Cummings. She died 21 Feb 1929 in Port Angeles, Clallam, Co, WA. at age 50 years 2 months and 29 days. She was daughter of Nelson Reynolds and Harriet Hammond.

The 1900 Census for Wallula, Walla Walla County, WA
George J. Cummings, 73, born Feb 1827 in Indiana to father born in New York, mother in Kentucky, married 49 years, owned his property, no employment identified.
Almira, 67, born January 1833 in Ohio to both parents born in Maine, mother of 4/all living
William E Cummings, brother (to George), 66, born May 1834 in Indiana to father born in NY, mother in KY. Divorced
Mary Temple, Sister-in-law, born August 1826 in Ohio to both parents born in Maine. Single.

The 1910 Census for Wallula, Walla Walla County, enumerated 15 April.
George J. Cummings age 83, born in Indiana
Almira(transcribed as Almer), age 77, born in Ohio, mother of 5/3 living.
The also had a boarder, Adah MacFarlain, 58, born in Michigan.

Neither were found in the 1920 Census.
The 1890 Census was destroyed in a fire.

The 1880 Census for Mitchell, Mitchell County, Iowa, enumerated 8 June
Geo J. Cummings, age 53, born in Indiana to father born in New York, mother in Kentucky, farmer
Almira, age 47, born in Ohio to both parents born in Maine
Calla ?, age 21, daughter, at home
Mary, 20, daughter, at home
Everet (as spelled) Geo. age 18, attending school
--all three children born in Iowa
--Two "servants", Barnet(as spelled) Howe 21, Rome Curtis, both farm labor. There was also a Curtis family next family listed.
--So it appears that "Great Grandmother Almira" was mother to Everett George Cummings, not HIS G-Grandmother. She was G-Grandmother to YOU... NOW, I know who you are seeking.

The 1870 Census for Mitchell, Mitchell County, IA, enumerated 11 August.
Geo J. Cummings, age 43, born in Indiana
Almira, 37, born Ohio
Orrin, 18, born in Wisconsin
Emma, 16, born in IA
Caroline, 14
Mary, 12
Everett 9

The 1860 Census for Mitchell, Mitchell County, IA
George J. Cummings 33, farmer
Almira, 27
Orin, 8, Wisconsin
Emma 6
Caroline 4
Mary 2
Also two farm laborers Morgan Titus and Harvey Wiseman.

The 1850 Census for Union, Rock County, Wisconsin
El? Temple, age 65
Mary Temple, 62
James 26, Oh
Mary 23, Oh
Alma 17, Oh
Mary Miner 7
A.J. Miner, 21
--next family
William Temple 30, Ohio
Mary A. Temple, Pennsylvania
Henry C Temple 3, Wisconsin

I found a family tree posted by "AKM8729" that has Almira and family. The tree identifies the parents of Almira as Ebenezer Temple (1784 to 1860) and Mercy (1797-1863). But the tree identifies Almira's husband as "George William Cummings", 1827 to 1909, although he was living at the time of the 1910 census. The tree identifies Everett George Cummings, born 26 August 1861 in Mitchell, IA, died 25 Oct 1935 in Enterprise, Klamath County, Oregon. The tree didn't identify a spouse or children I sent a message for the owner of the tree to read this thread and help if possible. As I warn everyone, do NOT take information found in a family tree as correct, there are mistakes. Verify everything.

---------------------Mary Cummings Douglas
The 1900 Census for Wallula, Walla Walla County, WA
John Douglas, born May 1863 in Iowa, Rail Road Locomotive Engineer.
Mary C?, born August 1858 in Iowa to father born in Indiana, mother in Ohio
Gertrude I, dau, born Dec 1890 in Oregon
Morse H, born August 1895 in Washington
Hale E. Harve, step-son, 17, born in Iowa to father born in Illinois, mother in Iowa ("appears" to be a son of Mary).

I find a family tree owned by a JWallace168, who I suspect is you. This tree has Mary Catherine Cummings. This tree also shows father George Cummings death in 1909. He actually died in 1914. This tree has a photo of Mary Elizabeth Spaid Lambdin. This photo was added yesterday. It is also attached to the "Kolb Family Tree" on 4 Feb 2008. The tree shows she was married to Samuel Lambdin and shows children. It doesn't show her parents, or any connection to Cummings family. Except for this person, I found no connection to any Spaid or Lambdin families.

---------------------Everett G---------
The 1930 Census for Port Angeles, Clallam County, WA
Everett G. Cummings, age 69, born in Iowa to father born in Indiana, mother in Ohio, widower.

The 1900 Census for Lewiston, Nez Perce Co, Idaho
Everett G Cummings, born August 1861 in Iowa, photographer, married 14 years
Sophia, wife, born June 1866 in Montana to father born in Pennsylvania, mother in Ohio
Mertie, dau, born Feb 1888 in Washington
Ruby, born June 1894 in Idaho
Merle, son, born May 1896 in Idaho.

Everett and his wife Sylvie are buried here:
http://www.interment.net/data/us/wa/wallawalla/mtview/mtview...

George and Almira are buried here:
http://www.interment.net/data/us/wa/wallawalla/wallula/wallu...
Almira died May 4, 1913, George died Nov 29, 1914.
Here is a picture of Almira's gravestone:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=cu...;
Here is one of George's
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=cu...;

Also this cemetery has John H Douglas, an infant born to John and Mary C (Mary Cummings). The listing doesn't show Mary.

George Cummings owned a hardware store in Wallula in 1889, he was listed as the father of Mary Douglas:
http://wagenweb.org/lincoln/wallulastory.html

About all I will do on this. As stated at top, I don't know what you have already.

Ron Bestrom

After posting, I read through my post and saw a few things I thought should be further checked

I went back to verify the Washington Death Certificate Index, and it showed Ulysses Grant "Beene", as the spelling, death 31 Dec 1927, as written.

The 1930 Census showed Beatrice Wickenburg, NOT Hickenburg. After seeing this typo, I re-ran the Death Certificates and found Beatrice died on 5 Sep 1944 in Walla Walla, WA at age 52 years 8 months 23 days. She was married to Albert Wickenburg. Her parents were listed as "U.G. Dean(sic)" and Fanny Perry. So, this also invalidates the finding of a Beatrice O. Bean in the Washington Death Certificate Index being the mother to a Theodore William Marsh. I further checked the Walla Walla Bulletin, but the online copies ended 17 April 1869 and resumed 1 July 1945.

As written, I had sent a message to the first person having your family in their family tree...BEFORE, I found enough on it to prove his family was NOT connected to yours. I sent it on Friday night, so, if they have already responded tell them to look at my first answer to you. One of the other 5 trees also had your family, also incorrect, but I didn't contact that one.

I tried to find Mrs (or Mr.) Wayne Waigandt of Oregon, she being the sister of Gary Todd, husband of Mary E. Todd, without success.

I again ran into a mass amount of articles in the Walla Walla Union Bulletin on Glenn Bean, again, he was a local judge so very newsworthy.

James W and Ilynne Bean lived in Walla Walla at least to 1985 at 613 Habson. They both died in 1993 in Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County, CA. (Wish I'd known a few years ago, spent several [business] trips there). So, at the elderly age, why move? Family? perhaps; but no proof until additional information is found. I checked the Contra Costa County Auditor site for information, but neither were found having recorded any documents. I also checked in Walla Walla Co, but there is no online recorded documents. Walla Walla does have online Assessor records, there is no 613 "Habson", there is a 613 Hobson. There isn't any visible connection to the current owner. I also checked for online obits in CA, without success.

Guess that's about all I can do on this one... Her husbad, 'U.G. Bean, died about 20 years ago.

-------Now, the problem--------
Family Tree's posted online (Ancestry.com). I supplied the link to the tree
1. http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/367909/person/-1076846125?ssr...=
Owned by a "DMHayes". I sent a message to this person to read this thread and help if possible.
This tree identifies Ulysses S. Grant Bean was born 15 Sep 1865 in Owen Co, Indiana....and died 28 Oct 1937 in Martinsville, Indiana. But additional problems exist. It shows the 1900 census as identified above for the person living in Washington State; AND, ALSO shows:
--The 1900 Census for Washington Township, Owen County, Indiana
Grant Bean, born Sept 1865, age 34
Nancy, wife, born Feb 1866, age 34, mother of 5/all living
Bertha, dau, born Feb 1889, 11
William, born Sep 1889 (2 children born within 7 months??)
Raymond C. born Sept 1891, 8
Mary A, daughter, born Jan 1895, 5
Jennie, Nov 1898, 1
--Everyone born in Indiana, parents born to both parents born in Indiana.

This family tree ALSO shows ANOTHER family to this person, no spouse identified, but showing five children born between 1898 and 1906.

While this family tree is definitely wrong, about two of the three families connected...Unless the father could move back and forth between three wives in Washington State and Indiana...and die twice.

2. There were 5 other family trees showing the Indiana family, another showing Ulysses being the father of both families, the one in Indiana and the one in Washington.

I am leaving the tree information above, even though the first tree and another of the other 5 were definitely wrong about the same person having both (three) families.
BUT, I am leaving it here.
WHY?
First, the Internet is starting to fill with WRONG family trees, which others latch onto believing they are correct. That is possibly why two of the six show both families. These trees once posted, do not go away. So, I am posting in an attempt someone might find this and CORRECT their information.

Now, back to YOUR Family:

-----------------Mary Bean--------------
Second, you identified a "Mary, or Mary Ann Bean" had correspondence with members of your family. The family in Indiana, mother/Nancy, includes a Mary A. So, do YOU have the wrong family found in Washington State?
Based on the obituary of Fannie, which shows she had a sister Edith Scott and you identified the connection to the Scott family...I think the family in Washington is the correct one for you. So, if correct, you are looking for "Mary Ellen Bean".

April 24, 1956
Accordionists to Play in Spokane.
Accordian students of Horace Lazzari at the Walla Walla Accordion School are scheduled to be participating in the Spokane Music Festival starting April 29 with John Molinari...expect to go to Spokane: Mary Ellen Bean.

June 21, 1967
On Honor Roll
Mary Ellen Bean, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Bean, was on the spring quarter honor roll at Eastern Washington State College, Cheney, where she is now attending summer quarter. A physical education major, Miss Bean plans to student teach here this winter in preparation for a career in education. Upon graduation at the end of winter quarter ,she will transfer to University of Oregon for graduate work.

December 29, 1967
Miss Bean Is Holiday Bride In Church Rites
Holiday nuptials for Miss Mary Ellen Bean, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Bean, 702 Francis, and and Gary Todd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Berdell Todd of Milton-freewater, were solemnized at 8 o'clock Friday evening, Dec. 29, ...
Mrs. Wayne Waigandt of St. Helens Ore., sister of the bridegroom, was matron of honor; Miss Janice Todd of Portland, another sister, Mrs. Jack Howard of Elgin and Miss Maureen Fitzgerald of Spokane were bridesmaids
Wayne Waigandt of St. Helens was best man and ushers were Jack Howard of Elgin, Tim Deseve, Russell Green and Nathan Jay of Milton-Freewater.
She will receive her degree from Eastern Washington State College in March. Her husband, a graduate of Mac-Hi, has completed his military service and is attending Spokane Community College. They will be living in Spokane.

March 30, 1969
Property transfer from Grant Bean to Mary Ellen Todd

I checked the public record resources found on www.zabasearch.com for the couple. I found a Gary D. Todd at 18944 Couch Ln, in Portland. Also at the same address is a Mary E. Todd. There is NO PROOF this is the right couple; but the full address and phone number is at the sight. Both born same year; but she "might" be to young to have graduated Eastern in 1967...But, given she graduated high school at 17; and went to summer school, it is possible.
---There is also a listing of a Gary D. Todd in the Washington Death Index, death on 13 Feb 1995, in Renton, WA, born about 1947. Was living in Federal Way. (But, there is no proof that his middle initial WAS a "D".
--The Oregon Death Index has a Gary Lee Todd, born 10 June 1943, died 10 August 1995 in Tillamook County, OR. His spouse's name was Mary.

--------------------Bettilyn Bean---------
January 27, 1946
Miss Bean to Marry Texan
Joining the ranks of brides - elect is Miss Bettilyn Bean of Walla Walla, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Bean, 111 North Colville Street, whose parents have announced her betrothal and coming marriage to T.A. Morris, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.F. Morris of Houston, Texas.
The rites are to take place in early February and will be in Walla Walla.
Miss Bean is a graduate of Walla Walla high school and later attended Whitman College. Before the closing of McCaw General Hospital, she was employed by that army installation.
Her fiance was recently discharged from the air corps, having been a flight officer and bombardier stationed at the Walla Walla Army Air Base. He received his education in Dallas, Texas.

February 7, 1946
Miss Bean is Bride in Rite
Nuptial vows were exchanged at 4 o'clock hour...Miss Bettilyn Bean, daughter of Mr. and Mrs James W. Bean...Mrs. Glenn L. Bean served the wedding cake.... Mr. and Mrs. Morris will make their future home at Sulphur Springs, Texas. (Note: it appears Bettilyn was the mother of Judy and Jimmy Morris identified in Fannie's obit).\

Leads.
The first thing to do is try to obtain the obituaries of the three son's. I've identified their full dates of death. Grant's "Should" identify where Mary Ellen was at his death.
I would suggest separate requests for each via:
The Washington State Library has a free research service, the ask-a-librarian program, where they will look for information in the archives, in this case the newspaper microfilm for an event, such as an obituary. They will look up to an hour and send you the results. Contact them at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx . Depending on the amount of requests, it could take up to a couple of weeks.

Ron Bestrom
Re: looking for 1893 marriage records for " __ Schiff" and DUQUETTE

Hello again Ron

Thanks for your offer to help but please respond to my private email at dadbrown_99@yahoo.com

In my research of Fred Hans, I have located several newspaper articles that mention that a formerly unknown individual (to me) named William H. Duquette is a "brother-in-law" of my grand uncle Fred Hans. I presently have no idea how DUQUETTE fits into my HANS family tree.

Fred may have had a unknown wife or girlfriend in the Omaha area about 1902 after he divorced or seperated from the sister of my maternal grandmother (Hans brothers, Fred & George, md LAKE sisters, Angie "Dollie" & Roberta "Bertie". Roberta was the 2nd wife of Fred Hans.

I think we need to somehow find the "mystery woman" or the unknown "third wife" of Fred Hans. William H. Duquette did have a sister named Mary B. who was born in Mich. in 1874. She may have md __ Able or Abel. Maybe Fred and Mary were connected which would make her brother Wm a b-i-l.

Someone has already searched for Walla Walla and on-line WA state marriage records for Schiff & Duquette with no luck as you thought.

I have been able to determine that Wm H. Duquette (Duquett, Dukett, etc.) had at least four wives--1- __ Schiff md 1893; 2-Julia W. Pierce md 1894 Omaha; 3-Hilma Cecelia Magneson born in Sweden, md 1902 in Omaha area; 4- Mary Christine Helea. I have confirmed descendants of Hilma and Mary but still no connection to HANS, yet.

Fred Hans had quite a colorful and or interesting career as a scout during the Indian wars of the 1870s and as a deputy US marshall chasing bandits in the "Badlands", and as a detective for the railroads in Nebraska and Iowa until his death in 1923.

Newspaper articles about Fred indicate that he (as chief of Detectives) hired at least three of his brother-in-laws including Wm Duquette as assistants or night watchmen/security guards.

Below are my transcriptions of various census records--

1930 census of Iosco co, Mich., East Tawas city, Baldwin Township-
-Duquette, Elizabeth head, age 76, widowed, born in Mich., both parents in NY

1920 census of Pottawattamie co, Iowa, Lewis Twp, Iowa School for the Deaf-
-Duquette, Elizabeth nurse, age 66, md, born in Mich., born parents born in NY
1910 census of Pottawattamie co, Iowa-
-Dukette, Elizabeth boarder, age 54, m1, md 18 yrs, had 3 children, 3 survive, born in Mich and both parents, nurse

1900 census of Pottawattamie co, Iowa, Kane Township, Council Bluffs city-
-Duquette, John head, Nov 1845, age 54, md 32 yrs, born in Canada, parents in France, occ.-gold miner
, Elizabeth wife, July 1852, 47, md 32 yrs, 3 children, 3 survive, b. in Mich., parents b. in NY, occ.-boarding house

need 1900 and 1910 for Julia W.
Dad...

I know we've talked before about providing information in your postings, this one is so very lacking. Is "Duquette" someone you are researching? Do you have a first name, date of birth/approximate, place of birth/approximate? He sounds French Canadian. Any information on this "Schiff"? What about the newspaper, what additional is written on this Duquette, where was it published.

For a "possible" marriage in 1893...possibly in Walla Walla County. I seriously doubt you will find anything.

But, I will help you out. The email link given to you by the other "poster" probably won't work if you click on it. Rootsweb's antispam system adds two "//" in front of the email address when you click on it, rendering it incapable of working. So, you will have to type the address as given. But, don't tell anyone that I told you how to email this person.

An anonymous person...

From the Morning Oregonian newspaper of Portland, Oregon - April 29, 1929

Convict Plans Action: Washington Prison Inmate Seeks Release on Minimum Time

Walla Walla, Wash., April 28. – Mat Botwick, Ferry county convict, some time this week expects to file a petition for writ of habeus corpus in which he attacks minimum sentences greater than those provided by the statute, and in which himself and some 200 other convicts are interested, according to prison officials. Botwick was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in the state prison for first degree assault and in his petition contends that the statute provides for a minimum sentence of not less than five years, arguing that the sentence imposed is excessive and he now is eligible for parole. The state parole board, however, has followed the practice of taking the court’s sentence as the minimum. Botwick was sentenced October 6, 1923, on a charge of dynamiting the home of Sheriff Moran of Ferry county. Moran previously had arrested Botwick’s wife on a bootlegging charge and she was fined $250.
Susie saving her horse 'Lucky' 1965

I’m making a scrapbook for my mother, Susie Stull. I would like to include newspaper photos, but can’t find the one I’m looking for. It was during the West Richland flood of 65. The picture shows mom with her horse ‘Lucky’ after she waded through the frigid waters of the Yakima, and younger brother Steve is also mentioned saving cows.

Does anyone perhaps know why this photo didn’t make it into the online archives at ancestry?

I would like to get an original copy of this photo to include in the scrapbook. If anyone has any other photos of her (or certain special items), please let me know. Any help is welcome.

--krissie

I'm looking for information on Francis Winchester, who was living in Walla Walla in 1892. He's listed as a photographer in the census; I'm wondering if he worked for or owned a photography studio in the area. Also interested in any other information about him and his family.

Well, for the benefit of anyone in the future who tries to track this down, I found a paper showing that Francis Pancoast was brought before a grand jury in August 1885 and after the evidence had been presented (both of Minnie's parents were there plus at least one of the doctors who first appeared as a witness back in Feb) the finding was "no true bill".

This means the grand jury declined to indict Francis Pancoast for the crime he was accused of committing. And for which he's spent the entire summer sitting in jail. Justice served, or justice denied? I guess we'll never know. I still don't know what happened to the man after that, except that he was honorably discharged at Vancouver Barracks in November of that same year. Its the last record of him I've found so far. By 1900 his wife Jennie Conlin Pancoast was married to John Kemp and they moved to Portland, OR.

I am looking for a marriage record of a J. Talmage Bly to an Allie B. (unknown maiden name). The marriage would have taken place between 1916-1920 as we have a WWI draft card of Talmage stating he was married to Allie B. and then they are living with Talmage's parents, John W. and Eliza Harriet (Bratcher) Bly in 1920. Both the draft card and the census record state Talmage Bly lived in Hill, Walla Walla, Washington.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Kate,
Patrick died before death certificates were requrired in Washington Territory. However, some court houses have the very early death records. Contact the Washington State Superior Court, 509-524-2790 or the County Clerk, 509-524-2780.

The other option is to find where he came into the USA and then find his immigration record. Also contact the Courthouse for his naturalization papers which are filed with the court house.

In 1880 Patrick and family were living in Walla Walla, Walla Walla Co., WA.
Patrick, b.
