Have you tried ordering a copy of his military record from the National Archives? I have one for my great-grandfather, who was also wounded in the war. It gives a lot of information on where he was wounded, when he was transferred, when he was paid, etc. Really fascinating! Anyhow, if you don't have a copy of the full military file, you might want to consider ordering it. It may give you the detail you are looking for.
