This little story was sent to me by John Alderman, Attorney at Law, Hillsville VA. He is the son of George Washington Alderman whose father was the George in the story. John was nearing his 78th birthday in June of 1985 and was still practicing law when I last corresponded with him.
There is a tradition in our family that goes, in June of 1826 Phillip Alderman and his brother George had gone on a trip to Old Salem North Carolina. They had been there a few days when at sun up one morning they received word that their sister Elizabeth was at the point of death. They were on foot but decided to go back home that very day. They immediately started out and all day long walked up hills and ran down them. Just at sundown they reached their home, having traveled more than 60 miles. Phillip fell in the door and was in bed some days. Of course, Elizabeth did not die and married Elias Bolt in 1833.
Parents of Phillip Alderman are Jacob Alderman & Rosanna Fadenland. This is where the history gets stalled. As you read through the notes you can see the problems with the last names for both of these grandparents. We know they are the right grandparents but we think he had a name change away from a Germany pronounciation to a more English sounding name and on the marriage records it does look like her name is Fadenland but some think it should be Flannagan. Hope you can find something to help unravel that puzzle. Here are the notes for Jacob Alderman:

These are the stories that have been compiled about Jacob and Rosanna:
Rosanna's parents died shortly after their arrival in America and she was raised by an Irish family named Flanagan. Jacob and Rosanna moved to Virginia in 1801 and settled in what was then Grayson County near the Montgomery County line. Their home was a log building, 16 feet square, with a large stone fireplace on one side. A loft overhead made additional sleeping room. Jacob later added a room 10 ft x 16 ft across one side. The house fell to ruins in the early 1870's but the stone fireplace stood until long after the beginning of the 20th century. Jacob was a wagon maker, made and repaired any kind of farming tool. He also built a small iron forge and made steel. Jacob was a man of honor and well respected. He could speak German and English and had books in both languages. He was about 5' 6" tall but weighed about 300 pounds. He is buried on the old family homestead and is the only family member buried there. He owned 467 acres of land when he died. The property was later owned by General Robert E. Lee and his brothers and by General Henry Lee, former Governor of Virginia. All this information was provided by Leslie Alderman, 15178 Cicotte, Allen Park, Michigan 48102 on June 28, 1996.
In 1780 Jacob Osterman a German went ashore in Wilmington, NC and then to Winston-Salem NC, married a dutch girl Roseanna Fadenland 1796. This information is part of the research of Sylvia Newman Malone, 1457 Ashland Drive, Charlottesville VA 22911, on May 21, 1999. She stated that it probably came from the Cincinnati Ohio City Library or from the internet, that was in September 1998.
Jacob was a German immigrant and it is thought that he is the same Jacob Alterman who arrived in the Port of Philadelphia on January 10, 1789 from Hambert Germany on the ship "Patsy Rudledge"; if so, a Henry Alterman came with him (Strassburger, PA) German Pioneers, 11, pg 34. He sometimes spelled his hame Alterman or Olterman. The family tradition is that he was seventeen when he came to America. See notes in Carroll Virginia 1765-1815 "The Settlement" by John Perry Alderman, copy in possession of Susan White.
OCCUPATION: Had a blacksmith shop and some believe he learned his trade from the Moravians when he stayed with them in North Carolina. Some of his sons followed him into blacksmithing.
LAND RECORDS:
One farm on the waters of Birks Fork and containing one hundred and nine acres having thereon one cabben and barn. Valued at $130. Two other tracts joining Elias Vansell on the waters of Birks Fork containing two hundred and twenty one acres very little improvements. Valued at $100. Total $230, signed Jacob Alterman in 1815 Real Estate Assessments of Carroll County Virginia.
In 1973, John Alderman, owned the original Jacob Alderman homestead, Jacob is the only one buried there.
I have lots more information on the children and wives for all these grandparents. If you think these are your grandparents what is the best way to get you the additional info. Your cousin, Susan
