36th Virgina Infantry "Logan Co Wildcats"

I would be happy to help anyone who is interested in finding out more information on their Confederate ancestors, who served in what is now known as West Virginia, Especially those men from Logan County.

I am the regimental historian of the 36th Virginia Infantry, which man men from Logan County served in. One of the most valuable companies to serve the 36th Va Infantry, was the "Logan County Wildcats".

I am also the WV Divison historian of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

I am looking for any descendants of those men who served in the 36th Va Infantry, also any information regarding this regiment: Photo's, grave location, letters, etc....

Anyone interested in finding out more information on their Confederate ancestors who served from Logan County, please contact me. I would be most interested in helping you, and to find other descendants of the 36th Va Infantry.

Several new discoveries. I found Tim Vance website, sooooo
much info and help, It is so well made and a LOT of work went into it. Wonderful job. Here's my problem. I have the death cert for my great grandfather Greenway Vance. On different census' he is listed greeville and greenway. He was married to Phoebe Vance supposedly his 1st cousin, now I might find that she maybe was a workman. (but they still could be cousins, you know how that goes). He was born July 22, 1877 on the death cert, and died 5-31-51. I was at my great grandma phoebe's deathbed, I knew her, but I wasn't born until 1957, so I didnt meet him. have only pictures. None of the other data makes sense for his parents or hers (if she was vance or workman, I cannot prove. I dont have her death cert yet. He was born Mingo county, died Mingo, lived Breeden. Parents on death cert listed as Andrew Jackson Vance and Rebecca Hensley. The other Jackson had a daughter phoebe, my god, they couldnt have been that close I dont think, also the dates are all wrong.
My next discovery was that my dad's obit in the Herald listed him as Alonzo Stacy Browning, although he was Stacy Alonzo, and my brother was named Alonzo Stacy, but maybe he was Alonzo all along, I dont have his birth cert. yet. I also always thought he was born in Lincoln county. It says he was born in Logan county. That is interesting. Well, back to researching I guess, one more holler to travel down.....

I am looking for information about a Fred Stratton who was in Logan County, West Virginia in 1904. The Strattons were a prominent family in Logan's early history, but I have not found one named Fred. Could this have been a middle name, perhaps? I would appreciate any information.

My great grandparents were Smith and Nettie McCleary Ferrell. (She married Robert Shuff after Smith's death and had one son by him.) My grandmother was their daughter Delphia, who married Bernie Blackburn Adkins. Unfortunately, the only sibling of Delphia's that I knew at all was her oldest sister Spicie Bias, and of her children, I only knew Oleta Williamson. I have a bunch of old pictures that belonged to my grandmother...I do not know most of the people in them...some have a name on the back but I don't recognize that name, or they don't have anything written on the back. I have most of these photos posted on Photobucket and will send anyone a link and password if you think you may know who any of them are. I would also REALLY like to know how the name Payne ends up being associated with Nettie...I was always told that her maiden name was McCleary, that she married a Ferrell and then a Shuff. Where does the Payne come in? A cousin has also told me that she was told that Nettie's name had been Fry at some point.

does anybody know where in dingess/mingo county, or what cemetary samuel and nancy vance are buried? Is it the same cemetary that greeway vance is in? They are my mother's great grandparents and grandfather. I would like to visit but I don't know anyone around there in twelvepole anymore. My vances lived across the road from the cemetary, sam and nan lived up the road, and Bird Green and Phoebe Vance's son, lived on a road in Breeden not too far from the hill going up to the cemetary.

Sandi, I just read your message on this line of my family and I am truly amazed. Yes, Nancy who married Samuel Vance was my mother Elsie's great grndmother. Sam and Nancy had Phoebe Vance, Phoebe married Greenville Vance (her 1st cousin. son of Andrew Jackson Vance and Rebecca Hensley)and Phoebe was my mother's grandmother, and Phoebe had Brookie (who married John Workman) and they had my mother Elsie.
It is amazing that you found out about what happenned to Farmer. I know from hearing stories in my childhood about the horror stories from the civil war. Some say in some parts of West Virginia they still act as if the war never ended. Brother against Brother is what they said. That is history! Thank you so very much for that information, I truly am amazed that this info survived being passed on generation to generation. It is truly family history. Also, my aunt married to Jarvey Vance was Elcie Nelson. She had sisters Selma, Tamsey and Zella.

Mary Vance Curry (1845-1875)

I am seeking information on Mary Vance who was the first wife of Luke Curry (aka L. C. Curry). Information that I have pieced together thus far is that they were probably married about 1866. Their children were Eli Francis Curry (b. abt 1866), Louisa Curry (b. abt 1867), George Ransom Curry (b. abt 1869), John H Curry (b. abt 1870), Robert G Curry (B. abt 1873), Minnis S Curry (b. abt 1873), Albert S Curry (b. abt 1876), Joseph E Curry (b. abt 1878). Luke remarried 14 April 1880 to Mary Jane Ellis. Mary Vance Curry headstone gives date of death as 1875 but apparently is in error as there are children being born thru 1878 (unless of course that information is wrong). Mary Vance Curry was buried in the Ellis Cemetery that was relocated due to construction of road from Chapmanville to Logan. She is now interred at the Peck's Mill Cemetery. Information on Meade Family Logan County West Virginia

Looking for information on my husband's great grandfather's family James Hansford Meade. Several of his family members including his wife died in a gas leak in their house in Logan County West Virginia. His wife was Mary Jane Meade and I don't know her maiden name. This occured int the winter of 1960 or early months of 1961 still in the winter. Would love to find any information on this. I think they are buried in the Forest Lawn Cemetery. I have located information on Rass Farley's parents (Wash Farley and Mahalia Pridemore) and could also add to missing information on Rass's children if anyone is interested (11 total). My grandmother was Lilly Dale Dingess, born in 1893 in Logan co. Her mother died when she was an infant, and she was raised by Walter & Mary Johnson in Logan & Cabell Co. I am trying to find out who her parents were. Her death certificate lists her father as Erwin Dingess & her mother's maiden name as Bryant. Mary Johnson's mother's maiden name was Dingess, & the 1900 census lists Lilly as a cousin in the Johnson household. There is an Emma or Emmer Dingess who died in Logan co in 1893. Her husband is listed as Andy. Could this possibly be them? Can anyone help me?

James and Louise had 4 children in Hamilton Creek (Laurel Hill Dist.), Lincoln County before James left the family sometime between 1906 and 1910. James died 6/14/35 at Shamrock, Logan County and is buried in Foley Cemetery at Melville, WV. It is suspected that James went back to Mingo County in or about 1910 and ultimately married Arisba (Risby) White when reviewing the 1910 and 1920 census for Harvey Dist. Mingo County, WV. In the 1910 census for Laurel Hill Dist. Lincoln County, it shows Louise Aldridge as head of the family and the children were daughter: Hattie May Aldridge (know as Aunt Hattie by many family members)who married Clarence Nelson of Lincoln County. Son of John Wesley Nelson and Mary L. Mullins-Nelson and grandson of Emanuel and Mary McCann-Nelson. Daughter: Dassie and no other information known at this time. Daughter: Carrie and no other information known at this time. Son: Boyd Frank Aldridge who married Wanda Lee Lovejoy in Lincoln County. Louise was the daughter of Allen and July (Julie)Nelson of Lincoln County. Louise waa married a second time to William Clark Collins. I am looking for a Beck or Beckham Kazee born approx 1899/01 in either WV or KY. The story goes that Beck was killed/murdered and thrown off a bridge in about 1934.

I would love to have some help in this search. He had been married to Ada Frazier and had one child, Jack Eugene Kazee.

Any help would be much appreciated as I live on the west coast. Thanks for any help!!

Looking for information on the Vannatter Family

I need info on John Vannatter Jr born in 1812 Cable Co VA. Would like to know who his father was and his siblings. It looks like it might be John Vannater of 1773 from Maryland. Can anyone document this to be true?

Is John Vannatter of 1773 the same John that helped settled the mouth of Hewett Creek on the border of Logan and Boone counties.

I come from Lorenzo D Vannatter son of John Vannatter of 1812.

I have but only a few names of my elders but no dates of birth or death. I'll give what I have and now and if anyone can give me any more information on what I have please write.

My grand mothers name was Dorothy Workman. Born 1919. Died 1985. Her dads name was "Banjamin Workman" He married "Trina Villa (Lowe)Workman".

Benjamins dad- "Joe Workman"..married "Arzella Thompson"...If that's the correct spelling.

Joes dad- "Crockette Workman"...married______________?? I don't know her name.

Arzellas dad was John Thompson. Mom was Phenelopy______?
I don't know her maiden name.

Trina Villa Lows mom- Margret Whitt?? Her dad was "Joe Lowe"

My Pa-paws name was "Oza C. Workman", born in 1907 in Logan to "Linda Belcher" and "Charlie Workman".

Lindas dads name was-"John Belcher", her moms name was Mary________?????

Charlies moms name was- " Jemima Nelson".....his dads name was "Tommy Workman".

If anyone has any information that could help I would greatly appreciate it.

I have long searched for my descendants. Elizabeth Lizzie (Meeks)Weddington was my GGGrandmother, first married to Thomas Stepp of Inez, Ky., then to Francis (Frank) Weddington. They moved to Mcdowell Co., W. Va. per the 1920 census. This census lists Bessie. I found Bessie marrying Virgil Price in Chatteroy W. Va. Aug., 1st 1921, with parents listed as Frank and Lizzie Weddington. Virgils parents are listed as Wm. and Caroline. I am looking for any information which may lead me to Lizzie and her family.
