The Vance family is looking for a living male descendant of Samuel VANCE (b. ca 1798 and d. 1885; lived all his life in Georges Twp.) and Nancy SPROUT of Fayette County, PA. Samuel and Nancy had five daughters and four sons, two of which, Thomas L. and J(ohn) Robert, relocated to Marion County, WV between 1850 and 1860. We attach here a family tree that includes three generations of Samuel and Nancy’s descendants and their spouses. 1. While Samuel’s headstone would back-calculate to 1801 and his obituary indicates he died at “about” 84 years (information was likely provided by the same descendant, Davis Vance), the 1850 and 1870 Censuses back-calculate to 1798, the 1860 Census back-calculates to 1799, and the 1880 Census back-calculates to 1800. It is most likely that Samuel was older than 84 years when he died in 1885.
2. While Nancy’s headstone would back-calculate to 1804-5, the 1850 Census back-calculates to 1800, the 1860 Census back-calculates to 1799, 1870 Census back-calculates to 1800, and the 1880 Census back-calculates to 1802. Therefore, we list about 1800.
3. While Samuel A. Vance’s obituary shows he died in his 53rd year, and would thus be born 1844, the 1850 and 1860 Censuses back-calculate to 1843.
4. The 1900 Census for Marion Co, WV shows Carrie B. (w/o Howard C.) as the mother of only one child. We cannot distinguish between Georgie and Rose as to which is her daughter. Because both are listed as Thomas L.’s granddaughters, we assume one was the child of his son Benjamin J. and therefore Georgie and Rose were cousins.
5. The Censuses vary as to whether “J” is John or James, sometimes it is Robert only.
6. A 1914 newspaper article referencing Robert’s death is not clear as to the precise date, it could also have been 4 Sep 1914. Death cert shows 28 November 1904.
7. The 1900 Census shows that Robert and Isabella had as many as ten children.
