Re: Pendleton Co., WV land grant map - 3 Ellsworth grants in Germany Valley

Classification: Deed
Surnames: Ellsworth, Nagley, Negley, Harman, Shall, harper
Susan,

I've attached three maps - a blow-up of a portion of a hand-drawn map of the northern border of a large land inclusive land grant which incorporated Germany Valley. Harper's Gap Run (formerly Scott's Gap Run) meanders along that northern border. In the blow-up is a parcel labelled George Nageley (Negley) and one labelled Pete Shall. The Jacob Ellsworth grant in which you have interest was adjoined the Negley parcel on the west. In the 2nd map, generated in a deed-mapping program, I've added all three Ellsworth grants in Germany Valley - 1 is Jacob Ellsworth's 215a, 2 is Moses Ellsworth's 357a, and 3 is Moses Ellworth's 60a. The third attachment is a google map showing Harper Gap Road (toward the top of the image) which is north of Macksville, WV and south of Mouth of Seneca on the North Fork river (western Pendleton County).

The three Ellsworth grants in what would later be known as Germany Valley:

Grant #1. Elsworth, Jacob Publication 1 March 1773. Other Format Available on microfilm. Virginia State Land Office. Patents 1-42, reels 1-41. Note Location: Augusta County. Description: 215 acres between Scotts Gap on the deep spring on the Southeast side of the North Fork of the South Branch of Potowmack. Source: Land Office Patents No. 41, 1772-1773, p. 216 (Reel 40). (From Library of Virginia on-line)
.
4 Sep 1811. George and Susan Negaly to Elijah Harper. 3 tracts: 215a between Harpers Gap and the Deep Spring, SE side of the NF, no adjoiners named. 100a above Harpers Gap, adj his former land. 80a on the E side of the NF and the W side of his former land. Consideration: 400 pounds, VA. Signed: George Nagley, Sarah Nagley. Witnesses: Z Dyer, Wm Janes, Peter Hull, John Fisher. Acknowledged by Sarah before Peter Hull and Wm Janes, JPs, 3 Sep 1811 [sic]; proved by witnesses, 1 Oct 1811. No delivery shown. Recorded; 5:303-306. (From Toothman's Pendleton Co. Deedbook Records).

Notes: We did not find the sale from Jacob Ellsworth to George Negaly (Negley) but the 1811 deed proves that there was a conveyance (or possibly more than one) which resulted in Negley's ownership of the Jacob Ellsworth grant. A later owner of a portion of this property was one of my ancestors, Reuben Harman.

Others may be interested in the Peter Shall grant which was sold to Isaac Harman in 1794. (Isaac Harman was the father of Reuben Harman who eventually owned a portion of the Jacob Ellsworth grant - the children of Isaac Harman bought many of the neighboring lands in this area and it's still known as Harman Hills).
