Murilla and Madie had 9 children: Carrie HEATH (1898), Ralph (1900), Virgil (1902), Pascal (1904), Bessie JORDAN(?), Esta LUNDY (?), Dorothy GRUBB (1906), Paul (1914), Willard (?), and Mary TANZEY (1920) --some of these dates are wrong.

Murilla's parents were: William H. BRAKE and Mary J. ARMSTRONG (b. ?1854, Upshur Co.)

Murilla's siblings were: Vieva (b. 1872, Upshur Co.), Cordelia (Delia) (b. 1873, d. 1969, Upshur Co.), Callie SHARP, Rosa CRITES, and Russell BRAKE.

William BRAKE'S parents may be G.D. BRAKE (father) and C.B. BRAKE (mother)
William may have had a brother, Benjamin D. BRAKE who married Martha _______ .

Mary ARMSTRONG'S parents may have been: Jared M. ARMSTRONG and Eliza _______ .

Brown, Skidmore, Pringle

My g-g-grandfather was Jabez Brown who married Amanda Tenney (Tinney), daughter of James Tinney Jr and Abigaile Packard. I'm looking for information on Jabez. Here's what I "know."

Jabez was born c. 1806. He was (maybe) a son of Israel Brown and Sally or Polly Pringle (maybe). He married (1) Mahala Skidmore, daughter of John Skidmore (son of John A. Skidmore and Mary Magdalena Hinkle) and Nancy Pringle. Jabez' older brother James married Mahala's older sister Magdalena.

Questions: Does anyone know anything confirming or disputing Jabez' parents? His place of birth or where his parents lived or came from? Does anyone know if Jabez and Mahala had children? These would be my my g-grandfather Gerome Bonaparte Brown's 1/2 siblings. Does anyone know where Jabez and/or Amanda Tinney Brown are buried? They are not listed in any Upshur Co. cementary. (On the other hand, the Tenney Cemetary in Hemlock, where Amanda's parents and brother are buried, has many unreadable fieldstone headstones, and G. B. Brown did live with Addison Tenney after his parents died.)

I'm posting this in Braxton Co. also, as that's where the Skidmores were living. G. B. Brown lived on Salem's Ridge and is buried in the cemetary in Rock Cave, which I think is not too far from Braxton Co. (My WV geography is pretty shaky.)

Any help appreciated. I am, as I mentioned, especially interested in locating descendants of Jabez and Mahala.

They had a daughter, who's my g-grandmother, Manerva A. Tinney. She married William Nathaniel Ellison, and they had my grandmother, Lucy Mae Ellison. Lucy, in turn, married my grandfather, Ralph Edgar Lipps, and they had a son, my father, William John Lipps.

I have found much family info on both grandparents but not record of my father's birth which I think was in Upshur Cty.

George Harman sold his farm before the 1910 census. I THINK he bought more property around 1913. He was a school teacher in 1900 and a farmer in 1910.

Would someone look in the cemetery books for George Harman/Harmon and his aunt Rebecca SHIRK? I'd really like to find out when they died.

Research indicates this is Rebecca Truby wife of John Cutright

Mrs. Rebecca Cutright died in Upshur County, Virginia on the 5th ult., at the extraordinary age of one hundred and six years. An obituary of her says: She was the first white woman who settled in the valley of the Buckannon river, coming to Western Virginia when quite young, and living with her husband in a hollow tree, at the mouth of Turkey run, in what is now Upshur county. - The deceased retained all her faculties in vigor until the close of her long and eventful life, and on the morning of her decease was caressing one of her great-grand children, when, feeling weary, she requested the child "to be quiet while granny would lay down and sleep."
The venerable old lady then laid down upon her bed and "slept the sleep that knows no waking." Her descendendants number between four and five hundred.

I am seeking information on Oscar L. Bennett. He is listed in the South Eastern Reporter as the defendant in a case involving child support for an illegitimate child in Mercer County in 1922. The plaintiff in the case is Amelia Wright, my greatgrandmother; the illegitimate child is my grandmother, Olive. Until I stumbled across this case file in the SE Reporter, no one knew the name of my grandmother's father. My Dad is real tickled to have this info, but it would be really great to find something out about Oscar L. Bennett. We know absolutely nothing about him, except that he was, apparently, in Mercer County sometime around 1920. In the census I found an Oscar Bennett of about the right age (I'm speculating that he was born around 1899-ish since that's when my great-grandma was born -that could be really wrong...); anyhow, that Oscar Bennett was born in Upshur County, which is why I'm posting here. Any info would be greatly appreciated. - Sharon

Angela Adkins of Milton, WV, wrote an e-mail and sent it to all members
of the Legislators in the State of W.Va. She pleaded with them to
step forward and represent the "people" of WV to keep our Archives where
it belongs and keep history safe for all West Virginians. She received
the following reply from Senator Donna Boley of the Third Senatorial
District:

"I agree with your assessment. Legislators will be at the Capitol in
interims this Mon/Tues/Wed --Nov. 26, 27, and 28. I would suggest
people come to the capitol and talk to their legislators one on one. I will
do what I can to stop this (as I have made several calls) - but the
decision rests with the Governor 304 558 2000 is his number."

Another important person of the Cultural Center who prefers to not be
identified wrote:
"I urge you to contact all supporters of the project to Save the W. Va.
Archives. Get everyone who can to contact their legislators before
Sunday, Nov. 25th or do so on Monday, Nov 26th when they are at the
Capitol for interims. As many as can should be there walking the halls and
visiting committee rooms and offices to take up the issue with their
legislators. Those who cannot come to the Capitol need to contact their
legislators and request that it be investigated."

Dear Friends,
Please call the Governor of West Virginia today and state that you do not want to combine the search room with the Library Commission. Let him know that you do not want the Archives Search Room moved across the hall. Tell him that you don't need a cafe or a gift shop in the Cultural Center. We need the Museum put back into the basement, more money and equipment for the search room, and the Gag Orders placed on state employees removed.

It is unbelievable that State Employees are not allowed to voice a public opinion nor make any comment to the press. I thought that was what our Veterans had fought Wars over & to protect our right of Free Speech. In order to work for the State of West Virginia, Joe Manchin requires you to leave the Bill of Rights in storage, before you can work for the state.

Joe Manchin believes that we need a gift shop and a cafe in the Cultural Center. Then he will be able to have dancing in the Great Hall of the Cultural Center and then have an elegant banquet in the Cafe. This recalls the story of Queen Marie Antoinette of France. Her people were starving and crying out for bread, her answer was "Let them eat cake." Marie was missing the point. They had no bread, they had no cake.

We have something important in our Archives, we have the history of the State of West Virginia. We have the original rosters from the Civil War, we have microfilm records of births, deaths, marriages, etc. We have thousands of books on family, county, and state history. And that's just part of it.

In moving the State Archives Search Room from the location purposely designed for it by a trained architect and cramming it into the Library Commission Lending Library you are conveying the idea to me that what it contains isn't worth keeping nice. That it's o.k. to introduce food into an archival building. It isn't. The architect said so when he built it without the cafe. Food brings vermin, bugs, rats, nasty things. These eat books, they lick the ink right off the original records that are stored in the building.

Putting a lending library with a non-lending archival library? How smart is that? The books that are loaned are exposed to everything outside of the Cultural Center and returned onto the shelves: chemicals, contaminants, and etc. All mixed in with the books that we should be trying to maintain in the cleanest environment possible. Bad idea.

We lost a champion on November 1, 2007 in our Archives Director Fred Armstrong who was summarily fired as he served at the Will and Pleasure of the Governor. The Governor was no longer pleased and Fred Armstrong was no longer employed. Fred played the game that the Governor wanted. He didn't gossip about the combination of the libraries, he did his work and he did it very well. When I was called and told he had been fired, I said "Well, that makes sense. The one person I could always say was a good, hard worker, doing everything he could to make the Archives a better place. And he's fired."

Has the world gone mad?

Please call Governor Manchin today at 1-888-438-2731. Let him know we don't want the Archives Search Room moved. Today he wants to move the Archives across the hall. Tomorrow he may decide to move it to Morgantown. Or better still, sell all of it on E-bay.

Have your friends, your genealogy society, your history society, and everyone you know write a letter to Governor Manchin, 1900 Kanawha Boulevard, East, Charleston, WV 25305.

In the 1880 cenusus of Upshur Co., WV, I found a Silas Halmick as the father of a Thomas and a Brown M. Halmick.
I believe this Thomas was the father of Flota L. Halmick who was born in Webster Co., WV, but at the time of her marriage, her guardian was B. M. Helmick. Flota's mother was Tina Hinkle, evidently both Thomas and Tina were dead by the time that Flota was married. I would greatly appreciate any information I can get on this family.

Hello,

I have reached a dead end on my great-grandmother! I hope someone here can help.
I have been looking for her death certificate but have been unlucky so far.
Her name was Eliza (Elizabeth) Samantha Barnett Boice. She married Samuel Moore Boice
in 1888. She died on Feb 14 1913, I thought in Braxton county which was where she
lived and her tombstone is located. So now I am trying the surrounding counties to find
where and how she died. Does anyone have access to death records of this county that could do a quick lookup for me?

I am check the possibility that Cyrus Hinkle fathered Ulysses Grant Reed. Family gossip infers that this is true and that Jesse Hinkle and Ulysses G. Reed were 1/2 brothers. U.G.'s mother was Maryann Reed...she was unmarried at the time of his birth. She later married Andrew Wilfong. Cyrus was a close neighbor...I believe he was a widower at the time (First wife being Marietta Radabough...second being Alvira Bridge). U.G. was born about 1868 and Cyrus and Alvira's first child was not born until about 1870. I belive that Cyrus had recently moved from Lewis County to Upshur County in W Va.

My name is James Edward WOODSON. I am the son of Claude Everett WOODSON, who was the son of John Croner WOODSON, the son of Edward Wilson WOODSON whom I belive to be the son of Edwin and Mary WOODSON. I have three names that I believe are the same person. Edwin WOODSON. who shows up in the 1850 and 1860 census for Upshur County as the son of Edwin and Mary WOODSON; John E. WOODSON who shows up on a marriage registration showing him being married to Elizabeth DOOLEY on 5/18/1867 in Buckhannon. His parents are listed as Edwin and Mary WOODSON; and Edward Wilson WOODSON who was married to Elizabeth DOOLEY on 5/18/1867 in Buckhannon. Edwin was 14 in the 1860 census. John E. was 20 in 1867. According to our records, Edward Wilson was born 9/16/1844. When Edward Wilson WOODSON died in 1894, Elizabeth listed his parents as Edward and Mary WOODSON. I am looking for descendans of Milner WOODSON through Edwin and his descendants who might be able to help me prove my assumption. Neither Edward Wilson nor Elizsabeth could read and write as evidenced by a deed signed by both of them using their mark. His was a "+" and hers an "x".

Also descendants of Caroline WOODSON and Hensley HARRIS. Caroline was Edwin and Mary's daughter. She reported Edwin's deatn in 1872 and apparently died shortly aftewards.

Also descendants of Sarah (Sally) WOODSON and first Jackson DOOLEY and second James LANE. Sarah was another daughter of Edwin and Mary and Jackson was a brother to Elizabeth

Long time searching, thanks to many of you for leads, but I picked up a will dated 1761 at the Lancaster Co. Court House in Lancaster Pa. It names Joh David Fischer as the father of George also I have the birth record of George, he was born in Lebanon Twp. Lebanon, Pa. Nov. 28, 1743, christening Dec. 18, 1743 at Quitapohila Hill Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lebanon Twp. Lebanon, Pa. I have sources for the connection, because I could not believe it would be "David" because it did not fit. His wife was Anna Mary (Maria Weitzaline, they arrived in America 1732 on the ship Adventure. after the death of David Fischer, George and Elizabeth along with many of the Conrads went to VA/WV the other siblings were Joh Lorentz, Joh Peter, Joh George, Joh Jacob, 2 daughters from a first marriage wife (Catarina or Catherine) daughters were Catrina (Katrina)and Anna Elizabeth, David and Anna Mary also raised a little girl from birth Anna Barbara Killker. I am on the trail of David's father now and some say it is Johan Mathias Fischer oldest son of Peter Fisher, brother of Sabastian, but I don't think so, nothing adds up yet, so I will keep you posted.

Just wanted to let everyone know about a photo I found today. The photo was in an old small album of tin type photos. It was the only one in the album that was named. The photo was of a man that appeared to be in his 30's and was labeled "Asa Tennant". There was another photo of the same man with a woman of about the same age.
I am a member of several MyFamily.com sites, and I was sure I recognized the name from somewhere. I have looked around some and can't find the name anywhere on my sites. I thought I would post this to a few sites in hopes it will help someone find some old family photos.

As a hobby, I rescue old, identified photos and attempt to place them back into the hands of family. I rescued these, because I thought they would be part of my TROWBRIDGE/KETCHAM line, but I don't think they are.

The first photo is identified as Zonie Holyfield, taken Aug 20, 1888 in Buckhannon, Upshur co. WV. It also says, "Joe Trowbridges 1st wife she died in childbirth w/Ellsworth.

The other two are of Isabelle E. Bonar Trowbridge. One says she's "mother of Ross & Dorothy" and the other one says, " circa 1903, Ross & Dorothy Trowbridges's mother."
Isabelle is Joe's second wife. One of her photos was taken in Parkersburg.

I'm trying to find photos of the children of George Washington Zickefoose and Mary Jane (Light) Zickefoose. Their 12 children are:
John Samuel, 1864 - 1947, married Rachel Virginia Wolfe and had 9 children;
Elias C., 1865 - 1935, married Nancy Ellen Been and had 5 children;
Alvin, 1868 - 1929, married Alice Virginia Cutright and had 5 children;
Mary, 1871 - 1879;
Eli, 1873 - 1961, married Jeanette Leigh and had 4 children;
Ellen (twin), 1875 - 1875;
Ellet (twin), 1875 - 1939, married Leva Leigh and had 6 children;
Sampson, 1878 - 1879;
Artennis S., 1878 - 1961, married Allethia Alice Butcher and had 4 children;
Heaston S., 1881 - 1963, married Jessie Maud Koon and had 2 children;
Delbert, 1883 - 1957, married Dora Belle Leigh and had 4 children;
Blaine, 1885 - 1961, married Lura May Reger and had 2 children, married Mary Ann Depoy and had 1 child.

I will gladly share what I have on these branches, and would be thankful for more information. I have just a few pictures at this time. Ideally, I'd like to have family photos of each branch.

Presiding Elder of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the Ottumwa District, is a native of Lewis County, Va., and was born May 11, 1829. He is a son of James and Barbara (Reger) Teter, both natives of the Old Dominion and both
now deceased. Of their five children the record is as follows: Alvah lives in Virginia; John is a large cattle-dealer in Kansas; Jacob is in Virginia; Isaac, our subject, was the fourth son; Granville is deceased.

The subject of this history grew to manhood in his native county, received careful training at the hands of most excellent parents, and obtained his early education in the common schools of that section. Early in life he determined to become a minister of the Gospel, and with that end in view closely pursued a course of Scriptural study. He was married in Buchanan, Va., Oct. 25, 1849, to Miss Rebecca Jackson, who was born July 25, 1831.
Her parents, Edward H. and Rebecca (Love) Jackson, were also natives of Virginia, and both descended from excellent families. Their household included four sons and seven daughters, as follows: Margaret married Job
Hinkle, of Virginia, who is now deceased; Sarah became the wife of William Sexton, and lives in Virginia; Mary was united in marriage with Val Strader, of Virginia; Elizabeth is deceased; John G. married Miss Salina Norman,
of Virginia; William L. is a bachelor; Minter J. married Miss Mary Cummins; Winford E. became the wife of Will S. Peterson, of Iowa; and they are now residents of Washington, D. C.; Prudence A. is deceased; the wife of
our subject was the next in order of birth; E. N. B. married a Miss Wilkinson, of Iowa, and they reside in California. Out subject and wife are the parents of two children: Joseph C., a resident of Burlington, and Frank
Elbert, of Ottumwa.

After becoming fitted for ministerial labors Mr. Teter resolved to come West for a permanent location, and accordingly, crossing the Mississippi in 1853, became identified with the Iowa Conference.

In the fall of 1861, having fully established himself in the confidence and esteem of the people of this section, and deeply interested in its welfare, he was elected to the Ninth
General Assembly of the State of Iowa, as Senator from the Sixteenth District. He fulfilled the duties of this position with great credit, and then, the Civil War being in progress, became Chaplain of the 7th Iowa Infantry and also of the United States Hospital at Keokuk. In this
capacity he sympathized with the unfortunate, cheered and encouraged the sick and wounded, and became the object of affectionate attachment by many who never lived to tell the tale.

At the close of the war Mr. Teter became Presiding Elder of the Burlington District, and since then has spent the greater part of his time in building up the cause of religion and morality. He is an earnest advocate of
prohibition, and by his influence and public speeches has contributed in no small degree to bringing the State to its present high position on the temperance question. He has taken an active interest in all matters pertaining to the general welfare of his adopted State, and has labored
with but little recompense for the good of his fellow-men. He possesses a keen insight into human nature, and has made the most of his opportunities of reading and study. He is a fluent speaker, possesses a valuable fund of
information, and without apparent effort secures the close attention of his audiences. His words are well selected and his line of argument at once takes hold of the reason and sympathy of his hearers. He has built up a good
record and made for himself hosts of friends in this county.

ISAAC PEARL TETER

was born in Lewis county, West Va., in 1829; he died at New Sharon, Iowa, March 6, 1900. He came to Iowa about the year 1852 and was ordained as a
Methodist Episcopal clergyman, by Bishop Matthew Simpson, in 1855. His early appointments were at Troy, Montrose, Winchester, Ft. Madison, Drakeville, Albia, East Des Moines and Sigourney. While at the latter place, in
1861, he was elected to the State senate, in which body he became active and prominent, especially distinguished by his efforts to secure temperance legislation.

In 1863 he was commissioned as chaplain of the 7th Iowa
infantry and went to the front. Resigning in 1864, he was appointed post chaplain to the military hospitals at Keokuk, where he remained until the close of the war. He was a popular preacher, able and eloquent, exerting a
good degree of influence wherever he resided. He had long been one of the most widely known Methodist Episcopal clergymen in the State.

was admitted to the Conference this year on trial. He was a recent arrival from Virginia, in which State he had been born in 1829. In his sixteenth year he was converted and united with the Church, and at the age of twenty-two he was given license to preach. He spent forty-seven years
in the active work, all in the Iowa Conference, and died on his last field of labor, at New Sharon, Iowa, march 6, 1900. The incidents of his long ministry would furnish an interesting chapter in itself. In the earlier days of his experience, after riding all day in an open conveyance he
arrived at his destination, which was the new appointment to which he had been assigned. He found entertainment at the home of one of the members of the Church; but was so discouraged with the outlook and so tired that he did
not make himself known. "We are looking every minute for our preacher," said the good lady of the house; "for one of our members is to be buried to-morrow, and we are anxious that our own pastor should conduct her funeral." He learned that there was a new sect operating in that
community, which claimed a monopoly on religion, and that no one outside of their communion had any right to expect to enter heaven. If the new preacher did not come, one of these would be called upon to preach. The young man,
after hearing a statement of the condition of things, acknowledged that he was the circuit-rider whom they were expecting, and that he was there to attend the funeral, which he did the next day. This gave him a splendid
opportunity to introduce himself, which he did in a satisfactory manner. He showed the utter folly of the teachings of those who said there was no hope for the
woman who lay in the coffin before them, simply because she had not submitted to a form which they said was necessary to salvation. From that day the boy preacher held the ground in spite of all opposition. This incident illustrates the manner in which he won success everywhere he went; he made the best use of his opportunities.

Once, having subscribed one hundred dollars to the college, he knew not where it was to come from.
A wealthy man lived in the town, and, though not a member of the Church, Teter went to him, and said, "Now, I want you to pay this for me, as you are able and I am not," and the obligation was paid.

In 1862, while he was pastor in Sigourney, he was elected a State senator, and acquired some distinction in the Legislature the following winter. Later he was ommissioned as chaplain of the Seventh Iowa Infantry, and accompanied his regiment into the South, where he remained until 1864,
when , returning North, he accepted a position which had been made vacant by the death of Isaac I. Stewart, as chaplain of the military hospitals in Keokuk, where he did faithful work with the sick and dying soldiers.

His ministerial labors included terms as presiding elder on the Burlington and Ottumwa Districts. In 1896 he was a member of the General Conference, which met in Cleveland, Ohio, and worthily represented his Conference.
He has well been characterized as "a man of superior natural and acquired ability, and was in the true sense an orator. His preaching was Scriptural, sound, and convincing, and delivered with force and unction. His voice was clear and musical, his enunciation distinct, and his manner pleasing; and he was sought for, for addresses upon public occasions, and he never failed to hold an audience. He had an exceedingly retentive memory, and his
social qualities were marked." He was well known outside of his own denomination, and took a lively interest in all living questions.

His death was very sudden, falling in an office where he had been in conversation with some of his friends; but in this he had his long-expressed desire fulfilled, that he might be spared protracted and severe suffering.
His remains were laid to rest in the Ottumwa Cemetery

I just received the Civil War Pension records for Isaac P. Teter. A general affidavit is given by brother, Jacob Teter on May 16, 1900 stating he became guardian of Isaac in 1849 and obtained Isaac & Rebecca's marriage license in Weston, Upshur Co., WV

I am looking for any information on Martin Conrad Born Abt 1877 ? Ohio. Died 18 Jan 1933 Buckhannon. Wife Orpha Belle Ware born 1889 or 1892 Braxton County, daughter of George Washington Ware, mother not confirmed Libbie Tenney per death certificate. Martin's father Stanley Conrad and Mother Mattie per death cert. Children Bernice, Joffie, Richard Lorentz my Grandfather, Earl, Denzil, Charles, Grace, and Mattie ll of Buckhannon WV. I am researching the Louk family & have Andrew J. Louk w/ children Eli, Idelia & Scott & wife Rachel (age 27) on the 1870 census in Upshur County, I have never found any documents listing Rachels last name. Recently, I have noticed there was a William Cutright age 50 & John C. Cutright age 15 living with them. I am thinking these are maybe Rachels Father & Brother. Does anyone have any info on a Rachel Cutright as being a daughter to William Cutright or marrying Andrew J. Louk?Any burial records of Rachel Cutright? Any info would help & be very much appreciated! Thanks!

Would someone be able to look-up a couple of marriages, please? Mary Elizabeth Davis married George Scott LINGER in 1893; he died 1896. She was left with 2 babies (Gary and Scott Arlie) and she probably re-married, as I can't find her in the Census after that. Is there a listing for Mary LINGER in the marriage books for Upshur Co? her parents soon moved to Roane Co., so I may have to look there, also.
Gary died 1910 in Roane Co. / and Arlie died 1973 in NC. But no further trace of grandma's sister Mary Elizabeth Davis Linger!

I am a decendent of Adam Grant Baughman through his daughter Rachel. I am looking for any family of Adam's son's who relocated to the Upshur County area-Grover Cleveland and Moses Napolean. Naopolean's(aka Pole) widow, Florence, remarried after his death to a gentleman named Ware. She died in a house fire on Randolph Street. I would love to hear from anyone who is connected to this family or who may have info on Florence's death-paper articles, obits, etc.
