Hello all, I am in need of assistance.
My great-great-great-grandmother was Amanda Bell Cartmill, who married John Emmett Ratliff (born in Kentucky, was on the 1880 census in Ceredo, WV) sometime in the early 1880s, most likely in Wayne County, WV. They were in Wichita, KS no later the 1895. The pair had nine children:
Willie Ratliff (B: ~1884, probably WV)
Flora "Flo" Ratliff (B: 1886, Wayne County, WV, D: 1961. Wichita, KS)
Matt Ratliff (B: 1888, Kansas City, MO, D: 1913, Wichita, KS)
Clair Riggs Ratliff (B: 1891, Wichita, KS, D: 1946, Chico, CA)
Herman Miller Ratliff (B: 1893, Springfield, MO, D: 1912, Wichita, KS)
James Ernest Ratliff (B: 1895, Wichita, KS, D: 1960, Cody, WY)
Carrie Elizabeth Ratliff (B: 1896, Wichita, KS, D: 1911, Wichita, KS)
Carter Emmanuel Ratliff (B: 1900, Wichita, KS, D: 1962, Fort Scott, KS)
Lyle Wilbur Ratliff (B: ~1907, Wichita, KS, D: 1953, Wichita, KS)
Amanda was born on April 25, either in 1865 or 1868 (I personally think it's probably 1865) in West Virginia. I suspect Wayne County, as that's where lots of other Cartmill families were and that's where at least one of her kids was born (as well as where her future husband moved to prior to their marriage). Amanda died on August 6, 1946 in Wichita, Kansas.
Online I have seen some people suggest that her parents were Tom Cartmill and Mary (usually Miller), though with no sources. There was a Thomas Cartmill who married a Minerva Miller in Wayne County who had seven children, all born before 1865 and none of them named Amanda, though. I have not found Amanda on any census before she became a Ratliff. I have seen her on later censuses as "Manda".
If Miller is indeed a name in the family, it may somewhat explain Herman MILLER Ratliff for a name, but I really don't know where Clair RIGGS Ratliff would come from with that logic, so maybe that's not any bit of supporting evidence towards that claim.
If anyone can be of any help with this dilemma, I would be very grateful! Thanks!
