My paternal gg grandfather James R. Jones is listed as residing in Ritchie County in 1860 in the federal census. He was identified by the census taker as a "railroader." Can someone possibly tell me what exactly a "railroader" means?

I am the granddaughter of Grace Carson, who was married to James DeVernit Carson. I am just working on my family tree. In fact, I think I think the second attached file includes a photo of your mother when she was visiting. The other picture (the first) is a photo of my grandfather (who died when I was 3) and his father, John Carson.
My uncle, Bill Carson, who is 92, is still alive. His memory has become rather foggy, though; however, I think he would definitely remember her.

Do you know much about the Carsons in Canada? Jane Anderson

Hello, thank you for taking the time to research the death of Margaret (Flood) Coffee for us. We've looked through the WV death records a number of times, but never thought of the possibility that her name could have been spelled wrong...that's a valuable lesson that we won't forget about the next time things seem to be going nowhere. When we go to the WV death records, using the spelling that you found, sure enough, it takes us to an image of a transit permit for Margaret Coffe, which includes a coroners' certificate of death and a permit from the Lewis County Board of Health to transport the body to Wheeling. The records we have indicate that our Coffee family living only in Wheeling, so the fact that she died in Weston, over a hundred miles away, seemed odd. However, after doing a little research, it turns out that many people with tuberculosis (which is what this Margaret died of) lived out their last days at Weston State Hospital in Lewis County. So, it seems like we may be on the right track. The only thing left to do is to confirm that she was Daniel Coffee's wife. Since we don't have access to Mt. Calvary's interment records, we'll contact them and see if they can check that out for us. Thanks again for helping us out, take care!

Please see the index:

Margaret COFFE, died 21 Nov 1912, age 50, died of tuberculosis in Weston, Lewis Co., WV. Her body was transferred to Wheeling to be buried at Mount Calvary, where her husband, Daniel COFFEY, was interred 8 Sept 1923.

Hope this helps!

I am researching this family to prove Casper Glass is brother of my 2nd great-grandmother and to prove their father Henry Glass (born Germany)is my 3rd Great-Grandfather.
Our Brick Walls - The Floods, Carpenters and O'Connors

John G. Flood, Jr., my 2nd great grandfather on my Mom's side, came from Ireland and settled in Wheeling around 1850. In 1853, he married Mary Carpenter, also originally from Ireland. Over the next several years they had three boys; William H., John F. and Michael J., born in 1854, '55 and '57. They then moved to Steubenville, Ohio and had four more children; Margaret (Maggie), Mary, Thomas and Catherine (Kate), born in 1859, '61, '64 and '67. Unfortunately, John and Mary died fairly young; Mary in 1870, and John in 1872, leaving their younger children as orphans. According to 1880 census records, Maggie turned up back in Wheeling, living with her cousin, Honora O'Connor, who ran a grocery store at 1700 Wood Street. In the 1900 census, Maggie's younger sister Kate, who spent some time in an orphanage in Cincinnati, was listed as living with them along with a boarder, Daniel Coffee, who eventually became Maggie's husband. We have conflicting records indicating that Honora was born in either Ireland or West Virginia in 1828, but her death in Wheeling in 1906 is documented. According to her death certificate, she was single, and her parents were Phillip and Mary (Reilly) O'Connor. Our biggest problem is that we don't know which family the O'Connors were related to, the Floods or the Carpenters. If we could find that out, it might open up a whole avenue of information leading to the original families in Ireland. On a side note, we also can't find any record of Maggie's death (her husband Daniel died in Wheeling in 1923). If anyone can help with this dilemma, it would be most appreciated!

Hello All,

I am researching Hannams Ellsworth Gray, b. abt. 1779 in Frederick Co. Va. d. in 1863 in West Virginia, Ohio Co. He appears in the 1840 Census in Tridelphia, Ohio Co., with his brothers/nephews living near him. They were George(brother) age40-50, William age 50-60(posible brother or cousin/uncle), and James age 20-30 relationship unknown. While I have much information on Hannams Ellsworth and his wife Mary Craig Gray I am hoping to find something that provides more details on his parents, such as his mother's maiden name. If any one can advise me on locating a death certificate, obituary or written family history I would be grateful.

Thank you.

He's 29 years old at the time, married to Ivie or Lou (hard to read), 21 ys old, his occupation is truck driver. In the line below them is a Godfrey, Alexander family, and I'd like to know if and how these two families are connected. The Wyatts were from WV originally (they may have lived in Sistersville, WV before they moved to Wheeling, WV, not sure though) and later moved on to California.

Andrew Mitchell

I am trying to find information on siblings and parents of an Andrew Mitchell married to Eleanor Snodgrass who were the parents of Rebecca, Hugh, Mary, John, James, Susan and William. William is my great great grandfather. They were in the Wheeling area prior to West Virginia becoming a state.
(You can view my Kennedy-Mitchell tree for dates)
I am unsure about who I have listed as a sister to Andrew but other then that I am 100% confident in the rest leading up to Andrew and Elleanor, based on census and family records.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

I am familiar with this family. Howard Glass had a brother named John B Glass who married my great aunt Agnes Gates. Their parents were Casper Glass and Lydia Haller. Casper's parents were Henry Glass and Mary Magdalene Miller. Henry was born around 1814 and immigrated to the US from Hesse. Please contact if you are looking for more information. This family always had a bunch of kids!

Wayhouses on the National Road active 1875-1882

I'm looking for names and locations of wayhouses that were in business around 1880. I hope to find guest registers that may include my ancestors the John Robert OHNSAT family, who traveled the National Road by Conestoga wagon from Pittsburgh PA to Pittsburgh KS around 1877. (Parts of my research are documented in my blog, http://tgkohn.blogspot.com/2012/06/ohnsat-mystery-on-nationa...)

I know that National Road travel was eclipsed by the railway system, beginning as early as the 1860s. However, a family anecdote claims the family took the National Road, and even one register entry would help prove the anecdote's truth.

I've travelled all of I-70 and most of U.S. 40, the construction of which pretty much obliterated the actual National Road. I welcome replies that include information about

- Still-extant remnants of the National Road
- Wayhouses in the county
- Rail development in the county
- County historical societies or museums that may hold such information

Thanks,
Thomas Kohn
tgkohn@aol.com
(Direct replies encouraged)

Thank you so much for this information. Having an exact birth date for my great grandfather (John Jackson Zeigler) is a huge help! Even having his middle name may prove to be helpful. It is also interesting to note that both his parents were born in Germany. I'm finding that much of the family lore I've been told isn't all that accurate.

Thanks again!
Tim

Jack Zeigler/Ziegler

I am looking for information on John Zeigler (or Zielger) who actually went by the name "Jack" and lived in the Brook County, West Virginia area for a period of time. It appears that Jack married an Effie Mae Mozingo in October of 1914 and had quite a few children (many of whom were likely put up for adoption). One of those children was Samuel William Zeigler, born in 1920. He fathered a child (out of wedlock) by the name of William F, also from the Wellsburg, West Virginia area. And I am the biological son of William F who eventually went by the last name of Powell.

I am trying to trace my biological father's roots but not coming up with much. Jack is about as far back as I can go.

Any information (including stories) you can provide on any of the above names would be greatly appreciated. If you can help in my geneology search, even better.

Thanks in advance!
Tim

I am trying to identify the parents of Hannah Shirley via her marriage record to James Hammett. They married 20 Jul 1834 and it is listed online. My question is how do I obtain a certificate or record and would it even have her parents listed? Thank you for any advice and guidance.

While hiking in the Whitmar hills/Shawnee hills area, I came across an old grave with the name Samuel Porter. The dates have worn off but it apears to be from the late 1800's.I have also found shell casings from 1861-1865 area.
I attached a photo below.
