Wilbur Newton, Former Teacher, Musician Dies

Memorial services will be held Thursday, Dec. 2 for Wilbur Newton, 70, of 811 Lee St., Rice Lake, a well-known area musician who died Sunday [November 28] at the Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, Fla. The services, open to the public, will be at 7:30 p.m. from the Rice Lake Elks Lodge. Memorials to the American Cancer Society and the Elks National Scholarship Fund are appreciated.

There will also be a requiem mass held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 3 at Grace Episcopal Church in Rice Lake with Father Donald Langlois officiating. Internment will be made in The Catholic Cemetery at LaCrosse.

Mr. Newton was born March 12, 1912 at De Forest. He attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa and graduated in 1939 with a bachelor of science degree. On Aug. 10, 1939, he married Lillian Mertlik at Decorah. He taught school in Onalaska for five years prior to moving to Rice Lake in the late 1940s where he was a social studies teacher and served as a guidance counselor for the Rice Lake High School until retiring in 1975. His wife, Lillian, died Sept. 21, 1978 and on March 8, 1980, he married Letha Love at Ruskin, Fla.

He was an Air Force veteran of World War II, past commander of the Rice Lake American Legion Post No. 87, a life member and past Exalted Ruler of the Rice Lakes Elks Lodge, and an active member of the Elks National Scholarship Foundation, and a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. He also played with his band, The Downtown Five, in the Rice Lake area for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Letha; a nephew, James Birnbaum of LaCrosse; and two grand-nephews.
