I wasn't looking for Maren yet when I made the post about Emil returning in 1888. I do see they arrived in Quebec on 30 Sep 1888 aboard the "S.S. Parisian". Their destination was Janesville, I wonder how they ended up in Washburn a year later! Do you have any idea what became of Emil's older brother, Karl Bernhart?

The 1900 Washburn Census says Maren was born Sep 1861.
Assuming Emil went back to Norway to get Maren, he had to have known her before he left. The emigration record for Maren says she was living in Kongsberg, not Eiker. Of course, she could have moved to Kongsberg from Eiken an some point. I would be very surprized if Maren was not also born in Eiker.
