My great-grandmother and great-grandfather arrived in 1892 from Belgium and had no other family here. My great-grandmother ended up at the Our Lady of Charity of Refuge with her 5 children after my great-grandfather died of tuberculosis in 1897, so apparently they took in more than just 'troubled girls'. Of my great-grandmother's 4 daughters that grew up at the monastery/refuge, 3 became nuns - they must have really sold them on that lifestyle. My great-grandmother ended up living the rest of her life there and is buried in Allouez Catholic Cemetery in the nuns' section.
