Jessica -- In revisiting this thread, I see I didn't send you the pictures I promised. Were you interested in pictures of the Joas girls? I know I have a beautiful picture somewhere of the two girls. I also have other pictures, including my greatgrandfather and his wife, and his mother. Were you interested in the two girls or others as well?

It's possible. I believe I only have one Frank Joas in my family tree but since my relative married a Joas, I haven't researched that line very much. Was your family from the Chilton, WI area?

Hi, I am not related. Hope this helps. RP

My guess is that William was not born in Chilton, but in Manitowoc County. This is only an index. You would have to buy a copy, or find a volunteer to look at the birth record. The 1860 & 1870 census for Eaton, Manitowoc County, shows Patrick & Julia Finnegan with a son William (1860 census) and aka Henry (1870 census) born about 1857.

"Wisconsin, Birth Index, 1820-1907,"
name: William Fenigen
event: Birth
event date: 20 May 1857
event place: Manitowoc, Wisconsin
reel: 0113
record: 001539
Citing this Record
"Wisconsin, Birth Index, 1820-1907," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VHH9-8NZ
I am the grandaughter of Marlea Sharon who married Geoge Schoen. I was always told Charlie ran away with the railroad but maybe that's not true. I did not know that there was a John Sharon. Lottie lived in Milwaukee and had 2 daughters. My mother Arline just passed away at 97. I have a book on the Claus Oesau family who I think falls in there somewhere.

"... I have a Anna Schilling in my tree who was born in Germany Aug 28, 1845. She married a Joseph Starr and had at least 2 children. Frank J. Starr Sept. 2, 1873- March 19, 1905. There are also entries in these papers for an Annie and a Joseph, but I don't know if they're a match for your family. These are indexed in a project with the working title: "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950). There are about 40 occurrences of Starr indexed from these papers so far. There are about 130 entries for the Schilling name.

Need help with look-ups?
Transcription errors are pro-forma for Ancestry db's. There are endless discussions on the Ancestry Site Comments and Ancestry Improvement boards. The best use of your time would be to put in an alternate, either in the name and add some info in "explain" or a comment on the record page. This will help other searchers in the future

I just started looking into my cousins' ancestors named Sampson and Fowler. Ancestry.com's 1870 census for Brothertown has a number of pages where the handwritten letter in Column 6, "Color," has been interpreted as a "J" for Japanese, when it was actually an "I" for Indian. (Actually, it looks more like an F or even a 7!)
Not sure how many pages had this enumerator's quirky letter I, but too many for me to correct, one by one. Does anybody know the best way to approach Ancestry, about changing these transcriptions from Japanese to Indian /Native American?

Thanks!
