I show that there was a Carl Fredrich Wilke that married a Carolina Pautzke and had 14 children in Germany, his twin sons Emil and Otto, and Carl came over in 1891.

I also show a Johann Karl William Wilke that married a Fredericke Barz in Germany came over in 1893. He went by John Wilke. He and his wife had a total of 9 children with all having been born in Germany. John Wilke was born 5/19/1839 and died in Dodge County, MN on 1/5/1911.

What I am wondering since both of thes men ended up in Dodge County, perhaps they wer brothers, or cousins? Does anybody in the Wilke families have any idea? Thanking you in advance, Sandy

I have a lot of info on the second family, including obits and some photos if anyone is interested...sanjos333@gmail.com

I realize this is long time since post. CORRECT location is NORTH of HWY. 26 & 33, on Hwy 26 approx. 1 mile. Minnesota Junction received it's name because of a railroad junction of old Minnesota/St. Paul railroad. Approx. 1 mile north of 26/33 intersection you will cross old rail tracks, if you would look to right there is remnant of other tracks now a bike trail. There used to be a small "spur or horseshoe" that would allow engineers to drop and change direction of certain rail cars. The town was built around the junction of railroad tracks. There used to be a rail station, etc. there Minnesota junction started out to really grow, but didn't for various reasons. There was no factory there, nor is that the reason it grew. It was because of the railroad.

Thank you for sharing this with me. I see that the family lived in LaCrosse, Wisconsin in 1900, but my grandmother Mary Falk was left behind in Clyman as housekeeper for her grandfather William Waterhouse and uncles.

So, it looks like my g-aunt Louise married John and lived in LaCrosse with her parents. Does that sound about right from the information? Or maybe the census was taken before they got married in Clyman.

How did you locate the marriage record? I'd like to know how to do that. Thanks again, MJ

I still haven't found an obituary, but it looks like he must have been back in Iowa when he did die.

Anyway, his death index record had his mother's maiden name (Hager) so I was able to finally track down the rest of his line.

Thanks for your response.

I am trying to locate information on the parents of Philip Jules Seuser (aka Philip Seuser, Phillip Seuser, Philip J. Seuser, Phillip J. Seuser).

Philip was born in Lowell, Dodge County, Wisconsin, in 1855 (perhaps October of that year). He grew up in Wisconsin. Married Mary Elizabeth Hunter (1859-1948) on February 16, 1880, in Rochester, Minnesota. After which they moved to Grove Township, Worth County, Iowa. They later moved to Freeborn County, Minnesota for only 3 years and then moved back to Worth County, Iowa and lived there for 20+ years.

Supposedly he later moved to Hill County, Montana (he and Mary did have a son, Victor, who moved there) where he eventually died. However, Mary died (and is buried) in Worth County (in the town of Northwood), Iowa and I have found no evidence of a divorce so I'm not sure if the Montana information is accurate. On every census Philip listed that both his parents were born in Germany. Family oral tradition also is that his parents came here from Germany.

I have found lots of records of Seuser's in Dodge County, WI but have never been able to connect Philip to any of them.

Any hints or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Koeppen Family in Wisconsin

The Koeppens from Brandenburg Prussia came in at least 2 waves to Dodge County Wisconsin before moving to Shawano County. The family of Johann Köppen, wife Fredericka and at least one son, Carl August, supposedly arrived in 1853.

From History of Northern Wisconsin - Shawano County, 1881.
"AUGUST KOEPPEN, Treasurer of Shawano County, Shawano, was born and reared in Germany, and came to Dodge Co., Wis., in 1853, and took up the vocation of farming, but subsequently left it and traveled through the Southern States. In 1861, he enlisted in Co. D, 4th Wis. C., and after an active service, during which he was wounded, he was honorably discharged in 1862. After his services in the war, he turned his attention again to the agricultural industry, and came to Shawano, where he has been prominently identified since. In 1870, he was elected Circuit Court Clerk of his county for 1871-2. In 1879, he was elected County Treasurer and has been continued in office since. He has held a membership on the County Board from 1870 to 1878. In 1862, he was married to Miss Caroline Frailing, who was born in Germany and reared in Wisconsin. They have a family of two sons, Charles Emil and Herman August. Mr. Koeppen is one of the active, enterprising men of Shawano County."
So far I do not find any record of them in Dodge County, no 1860 census (?) but in 1857 Christian Koeppen from Uckermark, Templin, Brandenburg, Prussia came to Dodge & appears on 1860 Census, they could be closely related, as I find it interesting that Christian also moved to Shawano County after Carl August.
Another son of Johann, Friedrich Wilhelm, came direct to Shawano in 1880 and is buried in the same churchyard with his parents. He claimed to have been born in Alt Güstebiese, Preußen & his father supposedly lived in Neu Güstebiese before immigrating in 1853.
Another mystery is the identity of Charles "Karl" Ludwig "Lewis" Koeppen who married the widowed mother-in-law of Carl August Koeppen in 1852 in Dodge County. Sophia, nee Kraut, Froeling (Frailing etc)
Ancestry.com, Website.
"Sophia Fraleah Marriage Date: 28 Dec 1852 County: Dodge Volume: 04 Page: 0022 to Charles Lewis Koppen.
In 1860 Dodge County he's listed as "Charles Keppin", not sure what became of him but in 1880 she's living with son-in-law August Koeppen in Shawano County listed as "divorced". But some may have confused this man with her last husband on later records?
Her daughter Caroline married August in Dane County Wisc. after he was wounded in the Civil War, but Koppen is written Weppen.
Wisconsin, Marriages, 1836-1930.
"Groom's Name: Augustus Weppen (sic) Groom's Birthplace: Prussia. Bride's Name: Caroline Frolick. Marriage Date: 25 Dec 1862 Marriage Place: Madison, Dane, Wisconsin Groom's Father's Name: John Weppen Groom's Mother's Name: A. Weppen Bride's Father's Name: Christie Frolick"
This caused much confusion when she applied for widow's pension later on!
well I hope to hear from anyone with pieces to this puzzle...

Hi,

It's been 11 years since you posted the message that I saw today on Ancestry.com on your Luehring/Joseit/ Schatt ancestry.

I've been trying to find the link between the Mayville WI. Luehrings and my ancestors, who came from Wesenstedt, Diepholz, Lower Saxony, and settled in Greenfield Township, Milwaukee County, WI. I've got some info on them dating back to the 1700's

One possible connection: I vaguely recall an attorney coming to our house in Milwaukee when I was very young. His name was Fred Luehring. My dad told me later that Fred was "a second cousin from Mayville". So far, I've found nothing on his parents, etc., only a WW11 Draft Registration card that implies he was in the legal profession.

If you want anything on the Wesenstedt/Greenfield Luehrings, I'll be glad to send it.

My question to you:
1) Do you have anything on Fred's parents?
2) Do you have any other possible links between the Mayville Luehrings and my branch of the family?

'Hope to hear from you.

John H. Luehring (Nickname "Pete")
email address luehring.h@sbcglobal.net
