In my previous post, I gave you 2 marriage records for Frank. One with his 1st wife Emma, then with Charlotte. Familysearch.org has the marriages indexed as in Fon du Lac County. But the Wisconsin Historical Society has them listed for Florence County. I am assuming that Familysearch.org indexed them wrong. Frank died in 1901. His father was listed as John Johnson, but his marriage records listed him as John Oleson, which is most likely right. Frank would have become Frank Johnson, son of John Oleson in Sweden. Listing his father as John Johnson was most likely used to conform to the US ways, with the same last name used for one family.

After Frank died, Charlotte married Alex Forsberg in 1904. The 1905 state census shows all the Johnson children as sons and daughter of Alex, but they would have been stepchildren.

The 1910 census shows Lottie with no husband, but she is listed as married, not a widow.

The 1920 census shows a Lottie Johnson with a son Will still living in Florence County. I think this is Lottie with her 1st husband's last name of Johnson.

Florence County may have obits for Frank Johnson, and Lottie Forsberg/Johnson.

You did not specify where Oscar died, nor whom he married, and if he had any children. So I couldn't go any further on him, except the marriage record I found for him in Michigan.

Ruth Pokorny
-------------
http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/vitalrecords/

Name Type Date County
Erickson, Emma Marriage Jun 28 1883 Florence Details
Johnson, Frank Marriage Jun 28 1883 Florence Details

Name Type Date County
Johnson, Frank Marriage Sep 10 1890 Florence Details
Safe, Charlotte Marriage Sep 10 1890 Florence Details

Name Type Date County
Forsberg, Alex Marriage Dec 29 1904 Florence Details
Johnson, Lottie Marriage Dec 29 1904 Florence Details
---------------
"Wisconsin, Deaths and Burials, 1835-1968,"
name: Frank Johnson
gender: Male
burial date:
burial place: Florence, Wi
death date: 13 Apr 1901
death place: Florence, Florence, Wisconsin
age: 49
birth date: 16 Jul 1851
birthplace: Sweden
occupation: Hotel Keeper
race: White
marital status: Married
spouse's name:
father's name: John Johnson
father's birthplace:
mother's name:
mother's birthplace:
indexing project (batch) number: B59602-2
system origin: Wisconsin-EASy
source film number: 1310183
reference number: 788
Citing this Record
"Wisconsin, Deaths and Burials, 1835-1968," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X2Y1-W97
Beaulieu / Harris in Long Lake

Hi,

I've been trying unsuccessfully for a while to track down the final resting place of the sister of my great great grandfather. Sarah Elizabeth (Mayville) Beaulieu died 21 Oct 1925 in Long Lake, Florence Co., WI. They had lived there a while so I assume they are buried in the area, but have not had much luck so far. Her husband is Martin Luther Beaulieu, and while I think he died around the same time, I have been unable to find any death information.

Additionally, her daughter Lula Sarah Beaulieu lived in Long Lake, where her husband William Winkworth died in May of 1940. I am assuming therefore that he would be buried there. Lula died under the surname of Harris in 1968. I would also like to find out if she is buried there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to email me directly at jamberleaschmitt@gmail.com

Thank you!
Jade

I was a little surprised they came through NYC. I always assumed it was Detroit. My guess is that it either had something to do with cost and/or ease of travel. I haven't researched it yet, but I wonder what rail development was like in Canada in the 1860s? Maybe there wasn't as easy a way to get to Detroit as we assume now. NYC makes sense since we know they had rail and canal access. If they went through Lake Ontario, they would have had to somehow get around Niagara Falls.

Since Alexander's death was in 1889, they didn't have to register it. Before 1907 all that was voluntary. Since the LeClairs were in Florence in 1880-1882, they were among the original pioneers of county. The county was created in 1882.

As for pictures, I don't really have any. I supposedly have one picture of my 2g grandparents, Noah and Felicite LeClair. I'm interested in seeing what you have?

My brother used to own a cabin in Florence, but he sold it. His brother-in-law still owns one so I get up there maybe once a year only these days. It's interesting that me, my dad, my grandpa, etc were all raised hunting in Florence County. No one knew why other than, "it's where my dad took me." I will look next time I go to Florence for the records. I rarely get to Green Bay or Florence during the work week so I rarely get the chance to get to the offices when they are open.

I appreciate all of your help here and appreciate the time that it takes to do all of this for me. Thank You.
Since I live about 9 hours away from Florence in Lower Michigan I doubt that I will get back to the Florence anytime soon.
A couple of more questions.
Alexander and Felicite were both born in the Deux Montagnes area, why would they go to N.Y. to immigrate? Detroit would have been the closer immigration office. Was there an office at Sault Ste.Marie?
Why didn't Florence County have a death record of Alex if it was such a big deal?
I was told by the clerk at the Florence court house that all naturalization papers were in Madison.
I'm trying to gather as much information as I can before the LeClaire reunion is held in the Flint area every year. This year it is on Aug 5th. Mostly descendants of Clifford LeClaire who settled in Perkins Mi.
Again, I appreciate all of your help here.

It was front page news when it happened in the Florence Mining News. He was killed on his homestead, which was just east of Fisher Lake. It says Coroner Keyes (of Keyes Lake fame?) held and inquest w/o a jury and declared the death an accident. Would there be a coroner's report you could find? Also if you get to Green Bay ever, I'd love a copy of his naturalization papers. Housed as the UWGB Archives, Date of Naturalization Sept. 15. 1885: Vol A. Page 13 Circuit Court of Florence County. Date and Port of Arrival: New York, May 10, 1867 aged 70 years. John Thibert and A. Peltier as witnesses.

Thank You Mr. LeClair.
Where did you learn of the story about Alex and do you know where he died? On a recent trip to Florence I searched the records at the court house and no record of Alex death was found. The clerk that was helping us told us that he probably died in another county and was brought back to Florence to be buried. Do you have any official records or obit's or any pictures of any kind?
They are my 3g grandparents as well. here's the story:

Alex and family moved from Michigan to Florence in May of 1882, with a couple of his kids moving a couple years prior. On September 28, 1889 Alex shouldered an axe to cut some jack pines for stove wood, when a tree fell sideways between two other trees sending the butt end of the tree swinging around. The tree struck Alexander, 77, and killed him on the spot. He was found by an L.H McGillis. Alex is buried at the Commonwealth/Florence Catholic Cemetery. Hope this helps :)

David LeClair
Madison, WI
Dont know if you're still following this thread or not but I do believe the person you're looking for may be James K Polk Mullins b abt 1845 in Kentucky. He was a son of Joseph Gentry Mullins II, b. 1822 and Joanna Little. The reason why I believe this is your guy is because Ive been researching his brother Edmund who reportedly moved to Wisconsin to be with his son Edward. So it appears that James K Polk Mullins, and Edmund/Edmond/Edward Mullins were both living in Wisconsin at the same time.

April, 1896, Commonwealth. Axel Bornberg [Björnberg] died at his home in Commonwealth, from the effects of diabetes, at 3 o’clock last Monday afternoon. Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the house and thence the procession started convening at the Commonwealth Church where pastor Johnson addressed the large audience that congregated, although a severe snow storm was raging. All work in and about the mine was abandoned for the day in respect of the sad occurrence. Most of the mine-workers with numerous friends of the deceased joining in the procession and following their departed friend to his last resting place on earth.

Mr. Bornberg [Björnberg] was born in Sweden in 1858 and came over to this country about seventeen years ago. Establishing himself at Norway, Mich., he subsequently engaged in mining continuing in this line of occupation he worked at Florence and several other towns on this range and was for many years past in the employ of the Commonwealth Iron Co. at its different mines. Due to exceptional skill and energy, he was soon tendered a position as foreman and for the last four and a half years has most satisfactorily performed the functions relating to the office of Night Captain at the Badger Mine.

Mr. Bornberg [Björnberg] was a very much respected citizen, of good morals and uncommon intelligence, which may be ascribed to his physical and temperate strength of character. Within the last couple years his health has left much to desire, his constitution gradually becoming weaker until last week Friday night he was found prostrated in the mine and taken to his home, he apparently remaining in an unconscious state nearly all the time till his death on Monday. At his bedside were his beloved wife, to whom he was married in the fall of 1892, and a sister who arrived from Chicago last Sunday morning, with nurses and hosts of friends that continually called and offered their assistance. This, with the faithful watch and medical attendance of Dr. E. P. Swift, could not save his life. His untimely departure leaves a mourning wife with two small children, aged about two years and one month respectively; two older sisters in Sweden and three younger sisters in America - Mrs. Carl Anders, of Rockford, Mrs. Bolin and Mrs. Nelson of Chicago.

Our heartfelt sympathy and condolence are extended to the bereaved family.

***********************

Source: Florence Mining News

Note: I guess I should include my own obit here. Thanks to Beanie for digging it up. The "two small children" were Clarence Ira "Tippy" Bomberg and Irene Viola Björnberg Anderson, mentioned in earlier obits.

Frank Bomberg
April 9, 2010

FLORENCE, Wis. - Frank "Bud" Bomberg, 83, of Florence, passed away on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at the Golden Living Center in Florence.

He was born Aug. 16, 1927, in Commonwealth, Wis., son of the late Clarence and Eva (LaChapelle) Bomberg. Frank graduated from Florence High School, Class of 1945.

He married Edith Dumke on Nov.14, 1947 and she preceded him in death on Oct. 20, 1966.

Frank then married Rosie McCraw-Roberts on Feb. 12, 1983, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 5, 2001. It's not often you are lucky enough to find two beautiful, caring women to love you, but such was his fate.

He attended Carroll College for several years and served in the United States Army from June 1948 to June 1952. He was in the occupation of Japan and was recalled to serve in the Korean War. Frank returned home to his wife and family and spent several years working in Milwaukee.

When his father became ill in 1953, Frank was asked to come home to run the family business, Tippy's Bar and Bowl. He ran Tippy's with his wife, Edith, until his brother, Paul, was discharged from the army, at which time Paul joined Edith and Frank. It was always a fun time at the bar, and people made sure they were there once a month to enjoy the stein party. While owning Tippy's, Frank had the bragging rights for having bowled a 734 series, which is the highest series ever recorded at the alleys. His grandson, Peter, has topped that record several times since. In 1965, Frank left the family business and went to work for Niagara Paper Mill, until his retirement in 1987.

He was always a quiet man, but he always had a twinkle in his eye when his grandchildren were around.

He is survived by his son, Dale Bomberg (Jane Frieburg) of Verona, Wis.; daughter, Connie (Bomberg) Falk of Green Bay, Wis.; sisters, Della (Don) Cero of St. Charles, Ill., Patsy (Folke) Johanssen of New York, N.Y., and Marilyn (Garth) Harrison of Fence, Wis.; a brother, Paul (Mary Jo) Bomberg of Florence; grandsons, Peter Falk (Tammy Petrowsky) of Racine, Wis. and Justin (Susan) Bomberg of Madison, Wis.; granddaughters, Dawn (Matt Prater) Falk of Racine and Katie (John) Zapfel of Milwaukee; great-grandchildren, Aurora Falk, Vienna Bomberg, Sabrina Bomberg, Leo Zapfel, Zora Beach, and Spencer Beach; stepsons, Roger (Krista) Roberts, Mike (Joleen) Roberts, Wally (Missy) Roberts, and Greg (Brenda) Roberts; stepdaughter, Vicky (Gordy) Crevier; 11 step-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.

Besides his wives, Edith and Rosie, Frank was preceded in death by his father, Clarence, on May 15, 1955, and his mother, Eva, on May 16, 1979.

Frank shall now find his peace and happiness with God in heaven.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at St. Mary Catholic Church in Florence.

American Legion Post 211 will conduct a Veterans Memorial Service at 12 noon Saturday.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:15 p.m. Saturday with Rev. John Hephner to officiate.

A luncheon will follow services at the church.

On Saturday night, please join us at Dina Mia's (formerly Tippy's Bar and Bowl) for one last toast to Buddy, if we did not, he would never forgive us.

You may light a candle in remembrance of Frank or leave a condolence for his family online at www.JacobsFuneralHomes.com

The Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home of Florence is serving the family.

***********************

Source: The Daily News (Iron Mountain, MI)

http://www.ironmountaindailynews.com/page/content.detail/id/...

Note: Frank was also my grandson, and again I was long gone before he arrived.

Are either of you guys near the Iron Mountain, "Homestead" area? If you are check out the book at the library "The Town of Homestead" by Ralph Hoaglund. It is a book on the History of the first settlers to homestead. It seems everyone in the area is related by marriage one way or another. Also in that tree are the Bryngelsons. My brother in law is a Bryngelson. My email is i2mtraveling@gmail.com

MEEHAN family in Florence Wisconsin

I am looking for information about James MEEHAN b 1843 in Upper Canada and married Mary Jane TAFF who was born 1854 in Illinois. According to the 1900 Census the family was living in Florence, Florence, Wisconsin. They had 9 children George T. 1873, Willie 1877 and Nellie 1878, born Ohio. James 1881, John 1883, Bessie 1885, Frank 1887, Charle 1889, born Wisconsin. Also Lennie Grace 1898, adopted.

James MEEHAN left Belleville, Ontario, abt 1863 and went to the USA to join the army where he was wounded. I believe his parents are Patrick MEEHAN and Bessie McGEE (Magee), both born in Ireland.

From the Florence Cemetery:
George MEEHAN d 1948
Charles " d 1933
Frank " d 1945
James " 1846-1921
Mary Jane TAFF MEEHAN 1857-1935

Thanks
