I know this email thread is rather old but I did discover a bit of interesting information regarding the Joseph Wagner I believe you're referring to here. I do not believe that this Joseph Wagner is the person that I am in search of who would be my fourth great-grandfather however I did notice that on the 1960 Federal Census for the United States for the town of Marshfield in the County of Fondulac in the state of Wisconsin there was a 50-year-old man named Joseph Wagner married to Catherine Dieterich, 27. They had a son, Joseph, 10 and a daughter, Mary, 8. Also, in the right hand corner of a document I found, on page 42 (image page 5), it lists Joseph Wagner as the Assistant Marsal. I am not a hand writing expert but it would appear that this man was the one completing the census and is listed as the enumerator.
