Classification: Query
Jacob (senior) Ostrander’s first wife, Abigail Walker, is a sister of Joseph Walker. Most of Joseph Walker’s children were born in Allegany Co., NY; they moved to Livingston Co., Michigan in 1838; and moved to Grant County, WI by 1848.

Using clues from Lewis Kellogg’s bio on http://iagenweb.org/shelby/1889bio/1889bio29.htm, Lewis’ parents are David Kellogg and Harriett Loomis (died about 1853), with David and Lewis moving to Grant, WI about 1854.

Looking at federal census records, David Kellogg and family are in Grove, Allegany, NY in 1840 and 1850. David and most of his children are in Grant Co, WI in the 1860 census. Jacob (junior) Ostrander married Elizabeth/Betsey Kellogg. Both Jacob junior and senior (and their families) moved to Grant Co., WI. Jacob (junior) Ostrander, David Kellogg, Lewis Kellogg, and other adult children of David are on one page of the 1860 census, and on the next page is Joseph Walker, who is the brother of Jacob (senior) Ostrander’s wife Abigail. I think this was a chain migration, not a coincidence.

It was difficult finding David Kellogg in the 1850 census, as the census taker had poor handwriting. The name was transcribed as “Daniel Helloy”.

1850 United States Federal Census Record

Surname GivenName Age EstimatedBirthYear Gender Birthplace >
Helloy Daniel 56 abt 1794 Male Connecticut,
Helloy Harriott 58 abt 1792 Female England,
Helloy Lyman 19 abt 1831 Male New York,
Helloy Luna 19 abt 1831 Female New York,
Helloy Mary Ann 17 abt 1833 Female New York,
Helloy Lewis 15 abt 1835 Male New York,
Helloy Charles 13 abt 1837 Male New York,
Helloy Harriott 11 abt 1839 Female New York.

I have not found Luna, but I think her name is Lyma. She is a twin of Lyman. Lewis named his daughter Lyma Levern. I think David’s daughter Lyma married Almond Scoville and remained in Allegany, NY. Refer to their 1900 US Federal Census record. Her birth date of April 1831, marriage date of 1852, and father’s birthplace of CT and mother’s birthplace of England are a fit.

In the 1860 federal census, Charles Kellogg is in Grant Co., WI on the same page as his father David. Charles is in the home of Ethan A. Bull. Bull is in the 1850 census in Allegany Co, NY. Bull’s wife is 27 year old Mary A. My first thought was that this MIGHT be the same person as the 17 year old Mary Ann Kellogg in the 1850 census in Allegany Co., NY. However, in the 1880, 1900 and 1910 US Federal census, Mary A. Bull consistently gives her parents’ birthplace as NY which would be incorrect for Mary Ann Kellogg. Also, in

"Wisconsin Marriages, 1835-1900
Name: Ethan A. Bull,
Spouse: Mary Ann Bull,
Marriage Date: 21 Apr 1856,
County: Grant,
State: WI."

Charles Kellogg’s daughter, Alvira Jane Kellogg, b. 1863 in Hickory Grove, Grant, WI, married first Samuel James Pettit, and second Allen A. Bull, son of Ethan A. Bull.

Charles W. Ricks, age 20, wife Sarah A. (Sarah Ann Barnhart b. IN), age 19, and son Myron V. are on the same 1860 census page, between two Kellogg families. In the 1850 census, Charles Ricks is in his parent’s home in Allen, Allegany, New York.
