Norman W. Ellis Born Grant County, Wisconsin; Civil War 90th New York Regiment

The Seattle Times Sunday, January 28, 1923
Bothell Mail Carrier Is Whole Membership of G.A.R. Post
A one man Grand Army Post! Such is the status of the John Bothell Post of the G.A.R. [Grand Army of the Republic] in which Norman W. Ellis is the sole surviving member.

Commander, Chaplain, Color-Bearer, Chief Factotum and general utility man for the post is this 75 year old Civil War veteran. In fact, he has the unique distinction of holding all the offices in the post, for he is the post.

Other members may have been honored by election to every office in their posts at various times, but probably no one of them has ever held all the positions at the same time as Mr. Ellis is now doing. Probably, too, Mr. Ellis is the only Grand Army veteran who ever found election to office such a simple matter. Electioneering, campaigning and all other semblance of political smoke is unknown in John Bothell Post. Such difficulties are solved without the use of red tape or other office machinery when the Commander casts a unanimous ballot which elects him to every office in the post.

Fifteen Members Once
Twenty-five years ago when Bothell was young and its Grand Army Post was in its infancy, there were fifteen Civil War veterans who gathered at the meetings to talk over the days before the war and even more often the stirring scenes they had witnessed during the War of Rebellion. Those hardy veterans who were still in their prime fought over again and again, the Battles of Lookout Mountain, Bull Run, Gettysburg, Shiloh and Corinth, who rehearsed for interested audiences the exciting details of Sherman’s march to the sea or Grant’s Wilderness campaign.

But a quarter of a century is a long span of years and each succeeding season has taken its toll of that band of war heroes until today Norman W. Ellis is the lone surviving member.

Like the “last leaf upon the tree,” he has lived to see his old comrades vanish one by one until he has been left alone to tell of those bygone days. But, unlike that famous character of Holmes who “tottered, weak and wan,” Comrade Ellis is hale and hearty in spite of his 75 years and true to his colors, he is still in the service of Uncle Sam.

Now Is Mail Carrier
For the last eight years he has been in the employ of the Postal Department and he is a familiar figure in the streets of Bothell as he carries the mail to and from the station each day.

Mr. Ellis was born in Grant County, Wisconsin and when he was only 15 the Civil War broke out. Less than a year later he enlisted in the 90th New York Regiment at Sherman, New York and served until the end of the war. He was in the Battle of Winchester and Cedar Creek and one of his most cherished memories is the picture of Sheridan, arriving after his famous ride, to spur that handful of discouraged men on to a victory.

Comrade Ellis has lived in Bothell almost as long as there has been a Grand Army organization there and now, when the roll call of John Bothell Post is sounded, he alone is left to answer for that group of valiant comrades.

Hi Doug: We too have been researching the Ellis family. We've traced back to Joseph Ellis who was born 1779 in VA. Some records indicate he was married to Elizabeth but this info was incorrect....I don't think Elizabeth's last name was correct.Washington Ellis (who is resting in the Vesterman cemetery) was born Apr 14,1807 in VA and died May 7, 1890 in Potosi, Grant co, Wi. of paralysis His first wife was Elizabeth Blankenshi and his second wife was Agnes Smith. William Riley Ellis was one of the children of Washington and Elizabeth. Joel was the son of Washington and Agnes Smith and he is also in the Vesperman farm cemetery in South Lancaster. A year ago, Ernie Brindley from Indiana visited the Vesperman farm and the cemetery wasn't being maintained and he cleaned it up and got in contact with the local township and they said they would try to maintain it in the future. Hopefully this is now being done. Ernie is a distant cousin and also has family tree information. Sue Cummins has extensive information about the Ellis family as does Dave Taft. I'm still trying to find out who Joseph's wife was and who Joseph's parents were and where they were from.....currently I think Joseph's family may have immigrated from Wales.
Gordon Ellis-Green Bay, Wi

I wrote to the Dominican Sisters at Sinsinawa and got a very nice response which included details of when she joined, her assignments and a brief "physical" description. You will need to give the name of the individual (I had both the lay name and the "Sister" name, and her date of birth/parents). Give it a try. You never know.

Hi Shirley.Thank you for yoru posting! I have just begun tracing my husband's mothers line..as she is in a nursing home..so I wanted to find out as much as I could..and he/ and she are descendants of Joseph Mezera. Do you have any dates..on the Joseph Mezera you are posting about?etc.. My husband's mother is is Gladys Meermans. She is daughter of Anna Mezera and Edward J. Hrdlicka. They lived in Ohio She states that Anna's father was Joseph Mezera and she thinks his wife was maria/marie mezera. Joseph apparently died young at age 42 per her.
Is this the line you are referring to as far as you can tell? Sorry I do not have dates..Gladys is now 86, and was born in l916..so her mother Anna Mezera must have been born approx l895 plus or minus...Anna and her husband Edward J. Hrdlicka ran a store and bowling alley and saloon in Clevland. Anna must have had three brothers..named Otto, Jerry and a daughter Clara. Their (Anna and Edward J.) children were Gladys Hrdlicka, Edward Hrdlicka.
Terry, send an email to the SW Wisconsin Room at UW Platteville. Request the obit from them. There will be a small charge (my last one was $3.00), they'll bill you when they send the obit (if they find it). Make sure you help them out and tell them where he was living when he died so that they can check the most logical newspaper.

http://www.uwplatt.edu/library/swwis/

But before you do, can I assume you've checked with the Grant County Genealogical Society for his burial records (which would hopefully give you his death date) and/or Findagrave? In case you didn't, I just looked at Findagrave and he's not listed in Grant County. In fact, the most recent Borah burial in the county is from 1939. Of course, these listings do not normally include unmarked graves.

Robin

I am not related. As I was researching my family, I grabbed items that might be of interest to others.

The following appeared in the Grant County Advocate on 24 Feb 187, page 3, column 4. The first appears to refer to a child of Hilbert E. Taylor and Mary J. Baird. The second appears to refer to Mary Nowel Woffenden.

Died.

In Bloomington, Jan. 17, 1875, EDDY, son of H. E. and Mary J. Taylor, aged one year.

At Patch Grove, Feb. 13, 1875, MARY, wife of John Woffenden, aged fifty-one years, one month and twenty-eight days.

Mrs. Woffenden was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshure, England, Dec. 16, 1823. Married in 1848, emigrated the same year to the United States, resided three years in the state of New York, then moved to Connecticut, and after a residence of seven years in the latter state, the family emigrated to Patch Grove, in this county, where they have ever since resided.

She was a lady of quiet, industrious and frugal habits and the true type of the good wife. Sensitive and retiring in her disposition, she ever shunned public parade of any kind, and chose rather to do what she did in a quiet, unostentatious manner; yet she ever felt for the woes of others and in times of sorrow and distress she was ever ready to shed the tear of sympathy or give a word of cheer to those who were afflicted. She was a kind mother, always looking after the interests and welfare of her family as only a true mother can, and she leaves a husband and five children to mourn her untimely loss. Liberal in her views she readily embraced the doctrines of the Broad Church of Humanity, and through the long and painful sickness which resulted in her death, bore with the meekness well becoming her womanly nature, the pains and tortures of the fell disease which was slowly but surely wasting her life away. "She was-- words are wanting to say what. Think of what a wife should be, and she was that."

William A. McDaniel 1809-1875

I am not related, so far as I know. Posting in the hopes that someone finds it useful.

From the Grant County Herald, 4 Mar 1875, page 3, column 6:

Died, in Beetown, February 19, 1875, Mr. William A. McDaniel, aged 66 years.

Of the above is can be truly said, he was a pioneer. Born in Maysville, Ky., October 9, 1809. Kentucky was at that time as much or more of a wilderness than are the cast territories of the far west at this. In early life he followed the occupation of pilot upon the Ohio and Lower Mississippi rivers, and up to the year 1833 -- about this time the lead mines of the Upper Mississippi were the Eldoradoes where fortunes were made and lost in a day -- and attracted the attention of that class of stout hearted hardy men to whom we owe the opening of all our new territories. Among that class, he came, and located in Galena -- the zenith at that time of the northwest territories; from thence to Dubuque in 1834, and located upon two acres of ground, and built the first house in what is now the principle part of that city. Still pursuing the fleeting Goddess Fortune, he came to Lafayette, now known as Potosi, in 1837, where for a number of years he followed mining, and held by appointment of the territorial Governor the office of Justice of the Peace, and as such sit many times in judgment upon the short-comings of our then motley population, and decided many titles and ownerships in lead mines according to laws made by custom. From thence he moved to Beetown, where he still followed mining, and he held the office of Justice of the Peace for over 20 years, and as he held that office almost uninterrupted for over 30 years, was probably at the time of his death the oldrst justice in the State. Mr. McDaniel was a kind parent, a good neighbor, warm-hearted and full of that genuine hospitality characteristic of the locality of his birth. Having become a believer in the Christian religion a number of years since, he lived and died in the Faith of an everliving God, a Hope in a Blessed immortality, and deserves a Charity beyond the grave. He was followed to the grave by a large concourse of friends, and buried with Masonic rights, having been a member of the Masonic fraternity for over thirty years.

The 1850 census is the man I am looking for,
but the marriage in 1846 I am not sure of. He married Lydia Dewey in 1852, supposedly his wife died earlier that year. He had three boys at home to care for, and Lydia was a relative of the deceased wife...that is in the family journal.
Unless, there was confusion and there were three wives. Which is also possible. That means the wife of 1846 died after only 6 years of marriage. But if this is accurate, then the wife of 1846 is the mother of Edward J. Kilbourn.

Nancy

I am not related. Hopefully this will prove useful to someone.

From the Grant County Herald, 8 Apr 1875, page 3, column 6, an obituary for Elizabeth Hail, nee Hummel:

OBITUARY.

At Potosi, March 26, 1875, Mrs, ELIZABETH HAIL, Wife of Gabriel Hail, aged 42 years.

The sudden death of Mrs. Hail fell like a pall upon her many friends, and her loss will be deeply felt in our village, as she was not only a wife and mother in her home circle, but had many of those beautiful attributes of woman that endear them to the hearts of all who come within the circle of their influence. No better evidence of the esteem in which she was held in the community could be given, than was manifested in the large concourse of friends who assembled to pay the last tribute to her worth, notwithstanding the almost impassibility of the roads. These tokens of respect for the one passed away, and the deep sympathy manifested for those left in affliction will be ever cherished with deep feeling of gratitude in the hearts of a husband and family.
