I just discovered and read the wonderfully descriptive journal penned by Margaret McCoy. She must have written it, in part, as early at 1848. The "log mansion" she mentions belonged to my gg-grandmother, Permelia Root, whose husband, Francis Root, died soon after they (with their two small children) arrived at Brooklyn WI from NY. They were accompanied by his best friend, Powell Shell, whose wife is mentioned, as well.
Margaret must have heard wrong when she writes that the two men came from "Portland" -- it should be Poland.
Many thanks for posting this on the internet. It was a thrill for me to read it.
Sincerely, Hal Mosher (researching the FLOOD, ROOT, and MCCLARRINON surnames from Brooklyn)
