Three tombstones in Green's Prairie Cemetery are for an Ellis family. John (died Feb 2, 1864 at age 42y, 3m, 19d), Edward J. (died June 25, 1864, age 15d, son of J. & C), and George M.(died Oct. 17, 1864, age 6y, 5m, 5d, son of J.&C.). Have not found found the family in the census, Ancestry trees, land records. Only clues are an article about the sudden death of a John Ellis in the 1844 History of Green County and a Civil War draft registeration card for a John Ellis in York Township. Anyone know this family?

Good Evening,

Thank you so much for taking the time to put all those photos and the obituary for Frank Martin on your site for us to view. We viewed all the information you posted to your site. It was really wonderful to see all the photos of the Martin family.

We cannot thank you enough for taking the time yesterday to call us and share all the history that Dorothy Martin had saved. What I found interesting is the beautiful letter that Frank Martin wrote to Maude. After all that happened he seemed to be so kind and caring. What a man Mr. Martin must have been…after all he had been through.

Dorothy Martin was a beautiful young women. I loved looking at the pictures of Frank Martin and Maude Gore in her younger years. We had never seen any pictures of Maude as a young women. I do think Dorothy resembles her mother when she was young.

Did we understand you correctly yesterday – we thought you had said there was a picture of Glen Gore “Lees father” at Rhea’s funeral? If there is we would like to see it.

I’m going to try and attach a photo of my husbands “Lee” brothers & sisters for you. This would be a family photo of all Glen & Eleanor Gore’s children. From Top Left to right is – John Gore, Alice Gore, Jerry Gore, Jim Gore. Second row top left to right is – Bill Gore, Harold Lee Gore, Raymond Gore & Lois Gore.

Really looks like we have more detective work to do.

Thanks again for all the time you spent helping us get to know the Martin family. We truly appreciated your time and all the insight you shared with us. Thank GOD for Dorothy. She sure did save a lot of information.

Thanks Katie!

Lynn & Lee Gore
Hello! I have posted some Gore/Martin pictures and also the letter from Frank Martin to Maude Gore, their divorce papers, Frank Martin's death certificate and his obituary. I have also posted a photo of Maude at age sixteen. Take a look at the pictures of Maude and Frank's children and let me know if you see any family resemblance. I think that my husband looks a lot like Maude and Frank's son Russell. Also, there is a photo of Frank Martin with his brother Ted Martin. Ted was not his actual name so we are not sure which one of Frank's brothers he really is. As you know, back then people often went by nicknames or by their middle name. Obviously we have more detective work to do!

Hi, I will call you tomorrow and we will compare notes. I will scan a copy of the divorce papers and post that. We also have a letter that Frank Martin wrote to Maude shortly before he died in 1964. Apparently my mother-in-law was the family historian and thankfully she saved everything. My husband took a look at that picture and said he doesn't recognize the fellow in it. We are interested in learning more about the Gores since my husband said he never met any of Maude's family. He actually only met Maude once when he was a child and doesn't remember much about her. Look forward to chatting with you soon

You may be able to help me identify them further. Two other pictures taken in 1952 when my parents & brother and his wife went to visit Florene Brisson and her family in Marquette.
Hi, thanks for your patience. We were in the middle of moving and were without internet service for a few days. Let me know when would be a good time to call you. I have found some pictures of the Gores along with another of Ted Martin. Also I have a copy of Maude Gore/Frank Martin divorce papers. We were aware of Ted Martin. Somewhat of a family scandal as we were told that Maude was pregnant with Ted when she abandoned the Martin family and left with Ed Calkins. She was still legally married to Frank Martin when Ted was born so that is why Ted's last name was Martin and not Calkins. At least that is what my husband's mother (Dorothy Martin) always told us. Dorothy also said that as a little girl she traveled by train from Marquette, Michigan to Chicago to stay with Maude and Ed for a while. She did mention that Ted was a baby then. Dorothy wrote down some family memories in a memory book and I will share them with you when we speak.

Hi Katie,

We have not heard from you and I'm sure you are very busy since your Mother-in-Laws death this past December.

I needed to email this attachment that my husband found while doing his search on his family tree. I'm sure this will be a surprise to your husband. It looks like he has another UNCLE that he might NOT know of. His name is Theodore Robert Martin and he was born on May 6,1929 in Cook County, IL "Chicago".

We did pay to get the Certificate of Birth...but we felt it was worth getting so we could complete our family search. The more we look...the more we find. It is really getting interesting.

Again, we really hope to hear from you.

Harold Lee & Linda Gore
920-468-8138

The attached estate paper is hard to read but the short version is that George Washington Adams is next of kin and that he is a son-in-law, Josiah owned property in Green Co., WI and that Josiah died on May 16, 1857 at Bureau Co., IL.

children:
Permelia Squires
1796 – 1885
Clemon Christopher Squires
1800 – 1886
Josiah Squires Jr
1800 – 1870
Hiram Squires
1801 –
Elizabeth Squires
1805 –
George Washington Squires
1809 – 1899
Martin Squires
1810 –
Sarah Squires
1812 – 1885
Nathan Squires
1817 – 1847

28 Jan 1998 , Rootsweb Squire-L Archives
Do any of you all have data pertaining to Clemon Christopher Squire, son of Josiah Squire and Lucinda Martin Squire. I am particulary interested in Josiah Squire's parantage. The following is a brief report of the data that I have. Ancestors of Josiah Squire Generation No. 1 1. Josiah Squire, born January 22, 1765 in Vermont; died May 1851 in Near Sheffield, Bureau Co., Illinois. He was the son of 2. Squire. He married (1) Lucinda Martin. She was the daughter of Isaac Martin and Lois Ives. Notes for Josiah Squire: Born in Vermont, moved to Steuben County New York C. 1790, with wife Lucinda Martin. Moved to Ohio about 1810 and then to Tiskilwa, Ill. He was shown on the 1850 census with his son, Clemon, in Benton County Arkansas. He died , near Shefield Ill., at the home of his son George. (I suspect that they came to Illinois about 1838.) Notes for Lucinda Martin: According to Past and Present of Bureau County, Page 807, printed in 1906, Lucinda died in Ohio. It states that she was born in Vermont. Information recieved from Leon Stiles, Pen Yan New York gives her birthdate and parents as Issac Martin and Lois Ives Martin. Lucinda actually grew up in Vermont, but was born in Wallingford, New Haven Connecticut. Her parents and grandparents miagrated to Vermont about 1773. Lucinda and Josiah Squire probably met and married in Vermont before moving on to New York with her father and his second wife, Sarah. Children of Josiah Squire and Lucinda Martin are: 1. Elizabeth Squire, born in Steuben County. ii. Hiram Squire, born in Steuben County, New York iii.Permelia Squire, born in Steuben County, New York. iv. Josiah Squire, born in Steuben County, New York. v.Martin Squire, born in Steuben County, Illinois .vi.Clemon Christopher Squire, born March 17, 1800 in Stuben Co, New York; died July 04, 1886 in Downey, Los Angeles Co, California; married Sarah BROWN August 16, 1832 in Montgomery Co, Ohio. Notes for Clemon Christopher Squire: Marriage Record found in Marriage Record book B64, Montgomery County, Ohio 1,050,855. GRAVE MARKER HAS NAME, PLACE OF BIRTH, DATE OF BIRTH AND DEATH HE AND SARAH HAVE STONES. SECTION 1 LOT 32. vii. George W. Squire, born May 04, 1809 in Steuben County, New York; died March 03, 1899 in Sheffield, Bureau County, Illinois; married Susan RILEY April 16, 1840 in Mineral Twp, Bureau County, Illinois. viii. Nathan Squire, born August 07, 1817 in Steuben County, New York; died October 06, 1847 in Suspected Bureau, Illinois. Generation No. 2 2. Squire, born Abt. 1735 in England. Notes for Squire: ACCORDING TO BUREAU COUNTY HISTORY BOOK, THE FATHER OF JOSIAH SQUIRE WAS AN ENGLISH SHIPS CAPTAIN, BORN IN ENGLAND ABOUT 1735, AND SETTLED IN VERMONT PRIOR TO JOSIAH'S BIRTH IN 1765. This stands to be proven. Have no evidence to prove it. Child of Squire is: i.Josiah Squire, born January 22, 1765 in Vermont; died May 1851 in Near Sheffield, Bureau Co., Illinois; married Lucinda Martin. He enlisted as a private at
the age of sixteen, but was promoted at the
age of eighteen to Second Lieutenant. After
the war he resumed farming, which he followed
till six years ago, when he removed to
Mineral, where he sold agricultural implements
three years for Conibear & Son.
Since then he has been engaged in that business for himself, and for six years followed
auctioneering. Mr. Squires was married October
15, 1865, to Miss Elma F. Rollins,
born July 30. 1849, in Manchester, N. H.
She is a daughter of Lyman P. and Olive
L.
Good Morning,

Sorry, I forgot the two attachments that I wanted you to see.

I recently found some information on Edward Calkins who was Maude's second husband. The information matches everything I have on him. Birthdate 1890, occupation machinist, children Ted, Jackie and Jimmie and birthplace Illinios. The problem is his wife is listed as Bessie NOT Maude. I met Ed when I was a teenager and recall him having a sense of humor and I can see him listing Maude as Bessie.

I cannot find anything that links him to a wife named Bessie. The picture we attached to an earlier email is Ed, Maude, Jackie and Jimmie.

The Ted Martin my parent's talked about may actually be Ted Calkins I have no pictures with Ted in them. It seems the more information we find the more confusing it becomes.

I would love to hear from you when get some time. Again, my home phone number is 920-468-8138 and I would be happy to accept the charges.

Thanks much and hope all is well with you!

Lee & Linda Gore
We are very happy to have received the photos.

We are sorry to hear of the passing of your mother-in-law. I believe she would be my first cousin.

The last photo attached I think was Dad's nephew "Glen Martin"...but I'm not sure. Maybe you can identify.

I do NOT recognize the little boy in the photo you sent to us? I have very little information on Ted Martin.

I look forward to your phone call. Also, I sure hope these photos send. I have had problems sending photos from this site. Also, I plan on uploading more photos and documents on the Gore Family tree....so you can check that out as well.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Harold & Linda Gore
hlgore@new.rr.com
920-468-8138

Harold,

I have found some information on Patrick McManus: his death certificate and obituary. It is on the Martin family tree I have. Here is the link to Patrick's page http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/40368236/person/20349914221

I have asked my husband about Patrick but he doesn't know anything about him. I know that several family members went to Traverse City a few years ago to do research on the Gore/McManus family and I will see if I can find any info on that. I do have some pictures that I will email to you. I have attached a photograph that includes Roy Gore; that would be your father's brother. The back of the photo reads Frank Martin, Walt Woods and Roy Gore. Not certain who is who but maybe you can tell? Also a photo of a Ted Martin; maybe this is Maude's son Ted? I may call you in the next few weeks as I gather more information. Unfortunately, my mother-in-law passed away just before Christmas and she was Maude Gore's last surviving child with Frank Martin. So a lot of family history went with her. However, she did leave a lot of family photographs and memoirs behind so I will see what we can glean from that. We have only just begun to sort it out.

I'm very happy to hear from you. Maude "Gore" Martin/Calkins McManus was my father's "Glen Gore" sister. I'm Harold Lee Gore and my father was Glen Gore and Maude "Gore/McManus" Calkins was my Aunt. Growing up I remember Aunt Maude visiting with my parents and I do have photos as well. It sure would be nice to talk and exchange what we do know about Maude and the Gore/McManus family.

I would accept the charges if you wanted to call me. My home phone number is 920-468-8138. I live in Green Bay, Wisconsin in Brown County. It would also be nice if you ever had the time and came to Green Bay....my wife and I would love to meet you. So if you can, please give us a call. There certainly is alot about the family that would be of interest to both of us. I would be more than willing so share what I know through the years. I'm 75 years of age and most of my family has passed.

Also, we've been to Marquette Michigan twice last summer and we plan a trip to Traverse City this summer to look for information on the family this upcoming summer.

I sure look forward to hearing from you!

Harold Lee & Linda Gore

Maude Gore Calkins was my husband's grandmother. We would appreciate any information on her since she left her family in Michigan (husband and 7 children) and had only limited contact with them after that. My husband's mother was her youngest child at that time and was about 7 or 8 years old when Maude left them. My mother-in-law always said that she had few memories of her mother other than she had a piano. We have a number of pictures of Maude that we inherited but not much is known about her. Any info on Maude and the Gore/McManus families would be appreciated.

Answering my own question here, Found Delia's maiden name:

Really bizarre, even though I just got a letter of no record found from LA county recorder for Myrtella for the range they searched, yet I just found it online myself...in that date range. Kind of annoyed that they'd not send a record that they DO have, but at least there is an image online. Found the digital film image of it on family search of dau. Myrtella Bonekemper's Death cert. (her informant was her dau. margaret). https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-29222-10638-88...

This death certificate does list mother's maiden name: CHILDE - and that her mother(Delia) was born in NY.

George Brides's birthplace was listed as Bangor, Maine.
Myrtella was b. in Monticello, Green, WI.

Looks like the Childs/Child/Childe connection is true- now to find a Childs who m. an Atwood with ties to NH and NY

Old Thread, but I have new info.

Just received Delia's death certificate from Los Angeles County, CA. Tried to obtain other family members' too, but have not found the right counties for them yet/records aren't being found (including Myrtella, which the CA index says she died in 1924 in LA Co., but received a no record found letter from LA)

Delia's middle name was spelt "Emmaline" in her record.

Fathers Surname: Unknown
Mothers Surname: Atwood
Informant: H M Buchannan
Informant's address 2036 W 28th St, Los Angeles, LA Co., CA

(Delia lived/died at same address, d. 14 Jan 1913, and is listed there in 1911 and 1912 city directories).

Delia was living in 1900 in riverside (widow) w/ son-in law Johnston & grandchildren (dau. Ida d. before her). Between 1900-1908 (and through 1910 census) she appears to have returned to Omaha, Nebraska for a time; living as a lodger in 1910 census, back in West 28th St., LA, CA by 1911.

Anyone know of any ATWOOD (or CHILDS) connections, or new info, on the Bridges family or Delia? (even any more on Buchanan?) H M Buchanan, the informant appears to be Myrtle D Johnston's (Delia's grandau. through Ida) husband Harris M Buchanan.

Any info or thoughts much appreciated, she is still my brick wall!

(on another note, obtained marriage record copy for G W bridges in 1852 from Wisconsin hist. society, and the actual record says Caroline D CHILDS, just like the index)- but no parents names)

There's some connection with the CHILDS family- to the Bridges and.or Delia- but I can't figure it out. 1870 There is a Marietta Childs living with Delia and G W Bridges, and in 1930 Myrtle Johnston Buchanan (informant's wife and Delia's grandau.) has a Cordelia L. Childs (aunt to head of house Harris M Buchanan) age 86 living with them in 1930 census in LA.

Hi,
I have a hard copy of a photo of Syver Guttormsen Gaarder and wife Barbo Helgesdatter Aasli (Gaarder) taken ca. 1849, probably about the time of their coming to America. According to the information on the back of the photo, Barbo was 15-1/2 years old when they married on 1 January 1827.

I'm not sure how they are related to me except that my great grandmother Bertha Oline Guthormson (Gaarder) married my great grandfather, Knut O. Gordon 26 December 1868, New Glarus, Wisconsin.

Let me know if our information connects. I'd be happy to share what I know.

Sylvia Nelson
nelso022@umn.edu

The subject couple are my 2nd-great-grandparents. I would be most grateful for details about them from the time of their birth to when they immigrated to America. Here is a timeline of everything I have about them during that period:

1829 Feb - John McDemott born in Galway
1831 Apr - Julia Holins born in Galway
1852 (abt) - marriage
1854 Sep - daughter Mary (my great-grandmother) born in England
1855 - Arrival to US
1856 Nov 26 - son John J McDermott b. in Wisconsin

I first see the family in Green County in 1870, but many have moved to Rock County by 1900.

Thanks for any clues about the family during this period.

Regards,
Daniel
