You gave me a lot of good ideas that I had not thought of, so thanks for that. Lena and her husband had a son, Frederick, who died about age 9-11. On the 1900 US census for him, it lists his mother as having been born in Germany. Like you said, her name was probably more like Schmidt and Lena may have been more of a knickname or even a middle name. I was recently in contact with someone from Ramsey County, North Dakota, where the couple lived to see if I could pay someone from one of the historical societies to do a bit of research for me, but my contact didn't know of anyone in the area who did that sort of thing. A lot of historical societies will look up obituaries for a small fee. Thanks again for your help.
