tgkohn@aol.comJohann Mathias KOHN (1839-1919) m. Susannah REINERT (1848-1887) in Kansas in 1874. (They had emigrated from Germany separately, in 1865.06.30 from Wasserliesch near Trier and in 1867.09.02 from Igel near Trier, respectively.) They moved with two small children to La Crosse after 1879 and before 1881, after which they had three additional children. Perhaps the draw to the La Crosse area was that Susannah had grown to adulthood in Caledonia MN (1865-1872), or perhaps Johann Mathias had a brother who lived in the La Crosse area and who had invited Johann to work on a dairy farm. By family story, Johann worked on a dairy farm, but I do not believe he owned it. ). Our family history says that Susanna Reinert-Kohn died in La Crosse of heat stroke on 4 August 1887, and she is buried there in St. Joseph Cemetery. After her death, Johann moved back to Kansas with his five children.
It may be this family or the family of a Johannes Mathias KOHN (1840-1888)=Josephine BECKER (1844-1900) "whose residence was 115 South Ninth Street" (La Crosse Republican & Leader, 1887.08.05.)
At the same time, the family of Joannes Mathias KOHN and Josephine BECKER lived in the La Crosse area. They apparently married 1865.09.18 in La Crosse, and had 11 children from 1866 through 1886. I believe this family was not related to the KOHN=REINERT family, however I have no knowledge of their home(s) of emigration, presumably in Germany, or of their parental families.
