I am looking for information on Metcalfs and Robsons who lived in Lafayette Co. James and Mary Metcalf came over from Gunnerside, Yorkshire England in about 1849 and settled around Benton. They had a number of sons (Leonard, Matthew, Francis, Thomas, James, Christopher, Reuben, David and Manuel). Margaret Metcalf married William Alexander, Isabelle married a Mr. Lewis, and Mary married John Harker. They all seemed to have resided in and around Benton for some time. Some moved to Grant Co. and others to Dubuque Co.
I am also trying to find out any information about Robsons and there whereabouts in England.
I have some family histories for the Metcalfs as well as a photo album with photos from the 1880s to about 1910 and am willing to share any information I have.
Matthew Whalen

I am looking for any descendants of MATHEW BAINBRIDGE (1846-1922) of Benton, New Diggings, and Blanchardsville, Lafayette County, WI. Most likely connections are through THOMAS SHERMAN BAINBRIDGE (b.1885) of Blanchardsville or ARCHIBALD (Archie) BAINBRIDGE (b.1888) of Beloit. My great grandmother, CHARLOTTE BAINBRIDGE (ROBINSON), was daughter to Mathew and sister to Thomas and Archie. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Looking for all the relatives who left the Skindelien farm near Torpa in what was then Nordre Land, Norway. It is now part of Oppland (about 20 miles west of Lillehammer). There was a large contingent of family members who sent in quit claim deeds on the farm in Norway from Wiota, Wisconsin in 1875. If you can trace your family back to this farm, or any of its subdivisions, I would like to correspond with you. I am trying to build a genealogy of the family in Norway, and have had some limited success that I would be happy to share.

Helen or Ellen Frisdligh or Phis???

Can someone make suggestions for how I should proceed in the search for the name of and information on a gr-gr-gr-grandmother? All we knew about her is that her name was Ellen, she was born in Germany (probably Prussia according to census records of her children), came to the U.S.A. at age 17 and was married to John Heidy sometime around 1840, probably in the Wisconsin-Minnesota-Iowa area. John and Ellen’s first child was born in Lafayette County, Wisconsin in 1842. She is listed as Ellen Heidy with the family in the 1855 Wisconsin State Census. One daughter was listed variously as Ellen or Nellie (later Horne) in census reports. Other children were Jane (Newton), Mary Ann (Hayden) and John. According to the 1925 Iowa State Census listing of daughter Mary Ann, her name was Helen Frisdligh. I did an online Ancestry search and found the following information: Helen Phis???, age 17, left Hamburg and arrived in New York in August 1837. She was traveling with Johan Phis???, age 2, and Margaret Phis???, age 4. Yes, this is the way the surname is listed on Ancestry; this is a transcription, this film is not yet on Ancestry. Doing an Ancestry wild-card search (Phis***), I was unable to find any of them after their arrival in New York. Is this Helen the same as Helen Frisdilgh and my Ellen? Frisdilgh is an unusual name; was the name phonetically spelled by the census taker?? How do you interpret this information? Where do I go from here to learn more including the correct spelling of the surname? All ideas will be appreciated.
Helen or Ellen is believed to have died in Lafayette County, WI well before John’s death in 1880, though no records or burial have been located. The family was probably Lutheran or Methodist – can someone suggest how to proceed to find records of these churches?
Thank you very much,
Merrily in southwestern Iowa
lilliemay@mchsi.com (please reply directly to this address)
Hi,
I have just begun work on my G-Grandmother's Johnson family. My G-Grandmother, Anne Jensdatter Johnson was born in Norway in 1858. She married Martin Jenson Rude in Norway in 1882 and they emigrated to America in 1883, settling in Argyle.
Anne had a brother named Sam H. Johnson, born February 23, 1869 in Gran, Hadeland, Norway; m. Dorita A. Olson likely in Gratiot or Wiota. Dora was born in Wiota on Sept. 27, 1875. She remarried to an Edward Dobson and died in Janesville, WI. I am in need of the death information/obituary for Sam H. Johnson, as well as info on his marriage to Dora Olson. Sam H. Johnson and Dorita A. Olson had the following children in Gratiot, Lafayette County, Wisconsin:
1. Viola Hazel Johnson, b Apr. 18, 1902
2. Esther Roella Johnson, b. May 10, 1908; m. Charles Eckert and resided in Janesville, Rock County, WI.
3. Gladys Rosella Johnson, b. Oct. 24, 1909; m. Elliot Getchell and resided in Edgerton, Rock County, WI.
4. Ruth Lillian Johnson, b. Oct. 2, 1911; m. George Campbell and resided in Janesville, Rock County, WI.
There were possibly other children, such as Alvah Clinston Johnson, born June 17, 1894 in Wiota.
Other relatives listed in Dora (Olson) Johnson's Norwegian birthdays book include:
Arlin Lorraine Johnson, Alma, Ida, Orrin, Herman, Bessie, Clarence, and Mamie Johnson.
Any info on the ancestors or descendants of this Johnson family would be of great interest. Thanks!

John Francis McElhaney and wife Anna Mae Crowe

Bridget McElhaney is believed to be the daughter of John and Anna and had nine siblings. The children were purported to have been born in WI and the parents in Ireland.
Bridget, the grandmother of my aunt, was married to Thomas Sharkey. Marriage location/date are unknown but date could likely be 1902/03/04. Their daughter Margaret, born Dec 1904 likely in Clay or Turner County, SD, is my aunt's mother. Their daughter Mary Loretta was born in Aug 1906 and died in Feb 1907 in Clay County, SD. Tom died in an accident in Sept 1907. Daughter Mary Ellen was born in Mar 1908 in Turner County, SD. Bridget passed away in May 1912; her grave marker in Wakonda, Clay, SD, indicates a birth year of 1877.
After Bridget's death, Margaret lived with John and (Bridget's sister) Nellie McElhaney Farrell; Margaret appears with the family in the 1920 Census for Murray County, MN.
There was a brother Charles F who with his family was in the 1910 Census at White River, Tripp, SD. (White River is now in Mellette County.)
In the 1860 Census for Elk Grove, Lafayette, WI I found
John McElhaney father age 45;
Ann mother age 31;
John 11;
George 9;
Meary A 7 (perhaps settled in LeMars, Plymouth, IA);
Peter 5;
Ellen 3; and
Bernard 2.
According to a "scrap of paper", Ellen was called Nell.
There was not a John listed
but there were
Charles Edmond (possibly in Canada)
Joseph (believe this is J. P. who was living in Hawarden, Sioux County, IA when his sister passed away)
Bridget (info above)
Margaret (whose married name was perhaps Southwick and living in IA)
I was unable to locate the family in the 1870 or 1880 Census and or in Wisconsin births or deaths at Ancestry.com.
Any help in locating family information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Luann Ouellette
Vermillion SD

Avon-Schwartz Cem., in Darlington, burials? plat maps? old photos?

Would like to find information on burials at the Avon-Schwartz Cem. Does anyone know of sexton records - or plat maps? I would like to replace the broken stone for my Lucy (Carpenter) FOLLON, but do not know the exact location of her grave.

Is there a local funeral home that has a listing of grave locations?

Does anyone have some old photographs of the cemetery, that would show where some of the older stones were?

I am also looking for stones of the SCHWARTZ family. So many stones are broken and removed, that we don't know where to put new stones in for family members.

Would love to see photos of graves, and hear of any plat maps, or stories of burials there.

Thanks so much ! Let's preserve this old cemetery!

Tami
Washington State

Henry Brooks 1854 (Germany to Lafayette County, Wisconsin)

(Also posted on the Brooks Board)

I am looking for info on Henry Brooks born 1854 in Germany. He came to the Darlington area and appeared to have stayed there for quite a while. Henry married Nellie Dixon in Iowa County, Wisconsin in 1880.
Three children-

1. Fred William b. 6-7-1881 Lafayette County, Wisconsin married Mabel Alice Walton and died in 1954.
2. Della b. 1883 d. 1901
3. Mabel b. 7-20-1891 in Lafayette County, Wisconsin married George Finkbeiner.

1880 Census Darlington, Lafayette, WI- Henry Brooks from Germany - butcher living with James Crow as boarder

1895 WI Census- Darlington, Lafayette, WI- Henry Brooks 2 males (Henry, Fred), 3 females (Nellie, Della, Mabel)

1900 Census- Freeport, Stephenson, IL- Nellie Brooks (his wife) listed as married, children are in the household, but Henry is NOT.

1905 Outagamie County, WI- Henry Brooks from Germany- listed as married (no wife in household) living with Orvill Loomis as boarder. (Right Henry???)

1910 Census- Freeport, Stephenson, IL- Nellie remarried to George J. Brown- Mabel Brooks (youngest daughter) living with them. Married in 1906. Did Henry die? Or where they divorced?

Nellie later marries John H. Engel and is buried with him in Freeport City Cemetery, Stephenson County, IL.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. It seems Henry vanished. I can't seem to find a death date, a solid birth date, parents, siblings, anything...

Jaymi

PS On the 1900 census Nellie was listed as Brook, instead of Brooks, which I imagine was a census error, but I don't want to rule out any possibilities.
I would appreciate it if someone could look it up and post it. I am looking for information on her husband, Thomas Raftery, who died 1n Mar 1987. Census records from Milwaukee has always shown he lived with his grandmother, Louise DeVries. Trying to figure out who his mother was.

Thank you for you time.

Krisin Hannula
duckula@tds.net

I have information that a person I was researching was buried in the Wiota Cemetery in 1926. In reading thru some of the posts I see that there is both an east and west Wiota Cemetery. How can I find out which cemetery would be the correct one? The surname is Schemehorn, first name Ezra, sometimes found as Edward.
Also, is the Gratiot Cemetery the same as Gratiot Methodist?
thanks for any help
Bonnie
