I am working to try to connect an Iowa line of BREI to the line in Mantowoc Co. I don't know that there is such a connection but the surname is unusual and both groups seem to be from Mecklenburg and of German/Russian descent. I also noticed a large number of BREY listings in same Manitowoc cemeteries with BREI listings and wonder if it is a variant spelling.
I would like to hear from anyone researching BREI or BREY.

A son Joseph Wagner, was born in the county on May 27, 1870. I am also looking for infomation on the John Matowitz [Matejowitz, Matejovetz, Matheowitz, Matgeowitz], family that lived in the same area. I don't need hardcopies just a quick fill in the blanks. Thanks.

Anna (nee Barta) Behnke...
Anna died:__________________(1930-1957), probably Reedsville.
born:________ (about 1880), in ___________Illinois.

Anna married Edward Behnke (son of Joh. Fred Behnke)...
Edward Behnke, born: 4 July, 187______, Rockland.
Edward died: 22 Nov 1957, probably Reedsville.
***Many online records claim birthyear as 1874, I am skeptical due to every census record 1880-1930 goes against this.

Anna and Edward Married 20 October 1903 Manitowoc Co., WI (Vol 7, Pg 299).

Their tombstones at ZION EVERGREEN CEMETERY, Rockland, were incorrect and incomplete.
http://2manitowoc.com/79.html
BEHNKE:
Anna/1872-19(uncut), ossw:
Edward/1873-19(uncut)

They had no children however my mother still recalls him, she said he was a very nice man.

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Manitowoc County, Wisconsin as his home of record.

Soldier: JAMES ANTHONY PANOSH
Born: 1931
Date of loss: September 7, 1952 MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 36 families from Wisconsin that have not been located. There are one family from Manitowoc County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (78 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Henry C. Wilke Obituary- fuller form- Sept 1951

My brother received from the Wis. Historical Society an obituary for Henry C. Wilke who died 3 Sept 1951 at Two Rivers, Manitowoc, WI. This was from the "Two Rivers Reporter," Sept. 6, 1951, Section 2, page 2. But the obituary was fairly brief, and he was the president of the Two Rivers Bank. We suspect there was a later fuller obituary printed in that or some other newspaper. Can anyone help with looking up and providing that obituary? Thank you so much in advance. Actually, any information on Henry, wife Wilhelmine (Minnie) nee Neumann, and the large family to whom he was related would be appreciated.

I've spent three years looking for traces of William Rudoplh Jordan (9/07/1860-7/15/1943) and his wife May Ann Regelin (9/10/1865-8/05/1903.) I'm not entirely sure if spelling is correct on Mary's maiden name. Their children were Ella, Caroline (Wyss), Edward, Sadie, Karl, Fred, and Arthur. All the information in here is from my great grandma Ella's family bible. Mary died as a result of childbirth complications from Arthur. Karl was killed in World War I.

I have plenty of information on Ella. She ended up in Rock County, Wisconsin with her husband Charles H. Austin. Ella's obituary says she was bron 7/29/1891 in Manitowoc, making no mention of parents or when she went to Rock County.

I went to Manitowoc looking for traces of this family and came up blank. I checked the vital records for deaths and births and got nothing.

Anyone able to help me find this family?

Trying to find the obits on Martin and Barbara Roth. They were from Germany came to this country in 1854. Have found them in the 1900 census, they were in there 70's at the time. I am trying to see if they is a connection between this family and my Roth family. Both families were from Neidenstein Germany and came over on the same ship. It is looking as if two brothers married two sisters. If this is the case Martin's brother was Albert and Barbara's sister was Elizabeth. Albert and Elizabeth (my 2nd great-grandparents) settled in Kewaunee County. Thank for any help in this matter.

Mark List

Mystery Death - Olsson

Family story is that Olof Olsson (m to Kjerstin Larsdotter, had 6 children all born in Sweden) came to Manitowoc County in 1850. The family (husband, wife and 5 children) received pps. in Gavle June 10, 1850.

He supposedly died in a logging accident and Kjerstin and her children then came to Iowa. I find her in the 1880 census in Iowa.

I've not been able to establish the family in Wisconsin or confirm his death sometime between 1850 and 1880.

Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

I am searching for anyone with information on Cerkas family in Manitowoc County. My mother is Irene Cerkas Laskie. Her father was John Cerkas, Mother Rose Sobleski. I know she had several brothers and sisters in Manitowoc as well. I believe Louis, Leonard, Violet, Emily and a couple of others. I would like any information I can get on family lineage, any living relatives whom I can talk to, etc.
I recently was able to find out that John's mother was Stanley Cerkas and his wife was Catherine Romianek Cerkas. Please help. My mother is a very poor historian and I have no information on her side of the family whatsoever. I was able to get this far in my research by obtaining a copy of her birth certificate and by my remembering some of my uncle and aunts names from 1965 when we came to Manitowoc after my father James Laskie passed away. My 2 brothers and I were placed with various aunts and uncles. I lived with Mathias and Emily Hein. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Lori

Antonie, Karlin families from Ellis Co., KS to Manitowoc Co.

In the 1920's the Peter and Caroline Antonie family, the Peter Karlin family, and others left Ellis County, KS and moved to Manitowoc Co. to work in the sugar beet fields. At the time of her father's death (Carl Anton Schmidt at Hays, KS on 31 March 1924) Mrs. Peter Karlin's residence was given as Manitowoc, WI. Peter and Caroline Antonie and children are buried in Manitowoc County (Manitowoc GenWeb index to cemetery transcriptions). As my ancestors and relatives--Drees and Gross--left Manitowoc Co. to move to Ellis Co., KS in 1878, and now I learn that families left Ellis Co. to move to Manitowoc Co., I would like to learn more about these Ellis County "immigrants." Are there any descendants of the Antonie, Karlin and other Ellis Co. families still in Manitowoc Co.? I would love to hear from you.

Looking for descendants of Clara Wilcox Henderson, wife of Samuel Henderson who married after 1884 after a divorce. Clara was born in NY 1856, near Henderson Harbor, Jefferson Co, NY. One may suspect that the Henderson family was from the same area. Clara resided in Wisconsin since the late 1860. I have no other information on Sam Henderson, only on ancestors of Clara. Thanks.

John Goedjen's (b. 1880) wife was Wilhelmina Maria Schanke (b. 1880). They married in Manitowoc Co., 12 Sept 1903.

I have Wilhelmina's parents as: Henry Schanke and Amelia Dorothy Wallner (Wuellner, Wollner). I don't have any vitals on them.

I have a sister of Wilhelmina named: Louisa Schanke. She married Joseph Zemek, 20 Dec 1893 Milwaukee. Joseph and Louisa then lived in Chicago per censuses. In 1935 Louisa visited the Goedjens in Two Rivers (newspaper story).

MY QUESTIONS:

Does anyone have any additional information regarding the parents and siblings of Wilhelmina Maria Schanke?

Does anyone have any additional information regarding the parents and especially the siblings of Joseph Zemek?

Thanks

Hopefully someone has my answers in their tree

I am researching the Frank Herman family. Frank Herman, Hermann or Herrmann was born in 1843 in Baden. He married Amelia Bersching around 1870, possibly in Manitowoc. Amelia Bersching was born Feb 19, 1842 in Herrinwies, Baden, Germany. Besides Frank Herman, Amelia married Mathias Windhauser Feb 9, 1875. I assume Frank Herman died between 1870 and 1875 in the Manitowoc area. Frank Herman and Amelia Bersching had two daughters, Louise Mathilda Herman born March 2, 1869 and Sophia Susan Herman born Aug 12, 1870.
I have located Frank Herman and wife Amelia in the 1870 census for Branch, Manitowoc Rapids, Wisconsin.
I can find no record of Frank Herman's death or burial in Manitowoc.
I have located several Herman families from Baden, Germany, but do know if and how they are related.
I found Amelia Bersching's immigration record. She was apparently single, and the person on the list directly above is Ferdinan Herman, born in 1834.

Before 1860, he had remarried to Nancy Beatta Butler, who third parties report dec'd in 1861.
Dr. Preston served as a surgeon in the Civil War (Company S, 6th Infantry Regiment Wisconsin); was at the same battle (Chancellorsville) where his younger brother, Clinton F. Preston, was wounded (Company A, 12th Infantry Regiment New Hampshire). Dr. Preston resigned his commission just before the end of his three year commitment, possibly to go to the aid of another relative in the Civil War, John A.
I recently acquired the old family photos. One of the photos I have is a formal photo of a baseball team. The letters M&S are on the uniforms with a K on the caps. It is dated May 1903. I am working on the assumption that one of the players is my grandfather Hugo Berg. He would be about 17 in the photo and looks like the approximate age of all the players. I am guessing the K may stand for Kiel as that is where my grandfather was born. Is anyone familiar with this team?

Newspaper in Cooperstown, WI ?

Was there a newspaper in the Cooperstown, WI area (Manitowoc Co.) which would possibly have included obituaries or other local news that could have included Franklin township across the county line in Kewaunee county ?

I'm trying to find Michael O'Shea (husband of Johanna) who farmed in Franklin Township, Kewaunee Co. I presume that Michael must have died between May 1868 and about June 1870 when the census was taken.

I have found Michael & Johanna O'Shea (Shea) listed as parents on baptism record for Patrick O'Shea who was born Oct 3, 1866 and baptised at St James Catholic Church in Cooperstown on Oct 23 1866. Baby Patrick apparently also died before the 1870 census, because he is not listed with the other children. Their youngest child, Mary Ann was born Feb 15, 1869.

I've contacted the Diocese of Green Bay and they have checked the records for St James in Coopertown, but there was no death or burial information for Michael.

Any suggestions or information regarding a local newspaper would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
Jody
I am searching for any info on the family of Anna Olson
who lived in Gibson in 1880 I believe. Her father was
Andrew Olson and her mother I think is Aledda Olson.
I found what I believe is her family a few months back in
the census(which was very hard to read)and am looking for
any info on that family. I was born and raised east of there
in the fox cities but moved out of state about a year ago.
I am interested in finding anyone who may be related to this
family. Anna who is Andrews daughter moved to Chicago and
was married and had one son. Can anyone help?

Looking for information on the O'Dea and Cooney families of Manitowoc. Lawrence Cooney married Ann O'Dea (both b. Ireland) moved to WI around 1850 after stops in OH and possibly PA. Believe Lawrence had brothers Thomas and James also in the area at that time. Ann may have a brother Michael O'Dea, and mother Bridget there as well. Have more info if interested.

Harriet J Knapp I believe may have been an adoptive cousin of my wifes great grandmother Ettie (Wright) Blasier/Keating (1868-1923).

Ettie Wright was orphaned in 1873 when her mother Maria M. (Cass) Wright died. Maria's father was Phineas H. Cass a farmer listed in the 1840 Federal Census of Rock County, Wisconsin.

I am not sure who raised Ettie Wright but in her autograph book is a signature " To my daughter M. A. Knapp Clarks Mills Dec 1882", also a calling card "Ettie Knapp" and an autograph " Harriet Silsbee Dec 1884 Janesville cousin". However her Eulogy states that she was raised by a Mary Pettis (possibly a later remarriage).

A History of Rock County states that Harriet J. Knapp was the daughter of D. B. Knapp of Rockford, Manitowoc Co.

Any information on the Knapp or Cass families would be appreciated.
