Dorothy M. DeFant of Waukesha died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005, at LindenGrove Health Care Center in Waukesha at age 96. Dorothy was born Aug. 14, 1909, the youngest child of the William and Mary (nee Schneider) Diedrich family. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic Grade School, Waukesha High School and Milwaukee Business College.
She was employed at Waukesha Motor Co. and Hein Werner Co. prior to having her own stenography service. She married Louis DeFant of Neopit on Aug. 7, 1936. Louis was a well-known gunsmith and the owner/operator of the Waukesha Gun Shop. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in Waukesha in 1986. Louis preceded her in death Feb. 25, 1995.
Surviving nieces and nephews include Carol (Gibson) Friedberg and her brother James Gibson; Karen (Schamel) Dulka; Kent Koenig, Kay (Koenig) Cottone and Kurt Koenig; descendants of the Adam Diedrich family, Betty Rossman, Shirley Cirillo, Dean Diedrich, Geraldine Lunde and William (Billy) Diedrich. Dorothy was the last survivor of her immediate family which included her brothers, Peter, Matt, Adam and Louis, and her sisters, Helen Gibson, Wilhelmine (Girard) Kroenke, Mary Schamel and Isabelle Koenig. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct.14, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery Chapel in Waukesha, with entombment immediately following.
