"My gg grandmother was Marie Elizabeth Riedel b about 1802 and she married a Georg Garbisch - they lived in Prussia, Klein Ujeschuetz Silesia & they immigrated in about 1840 & settled in the Mequon/Freistadt/Kichayn area - they came as Lutherans for more freedom ..."

There is a marriage notice in at least one of Milwaukee's German newspapers for a George Garbisch & Maria Elis. Gierach, m. 20 Apr 1847 by Luth. Pastor Krause in "Freystadt", published in 1847 (is her maiden name a mistake?). Another marriage published with theirs is for George Friedrich Gierach & Friedericke Bartlet. These aren't transcriptions of court registers as published in later years. These are published by the minister or justice of the peace (to drum up business?), and sometimes by the couples themselves. Many of these very early notices are for the Ozaukee/Washington Co. area.
