1880 Milwaukee Directory Lookup Please - Hinnenthal / Weiss

Our family records indicate that in 1880 my gr-grandfather is listed in the Milwaukee city directory as:

Hinnenthal, William; care of Mr. Weiss, 470 Elizabeth St.

Since William was living in Franklin at the time, I would very much appreciate it if A) someone could verify that listing and B) check to see if Mr. Weiss has a listing with a first name and occupation. I have no idea who this man is and not enough information to locate him in other sources.

Many, many thanks for your assistance.

Lynn in NYC

Reverse Lookup Please - 523 Park Ave

I have a mysterious notation in my family records...supposedly a great-aunt went to live with *family* in Milwaukee. The notation reads that the address to which she moved was given as 523 Park in the 1920 census, but no name was given for the family. How someone would know a census address/year but not the family name is beyond me, but nonetheless, I"d like to follow-up and see who was there. I understand that reverse directories started in 1921; would someone kindly take a look and see what name(s) are listed?

For the records, I cannot find this aunt in the 1920 census at any address. If you want to give her a try, she was Wilhelmine ("Minnie/Minna") Hinnenthal, b. 6/1876 in WI; parents b. Germany (Prussia).

Many thanks for the help!

Lynn in NYC

I am looking for any information about the Kobs family that came from the area of Zlotow, Poland during 1872-1887. They lived on the Polish southside of Milwaukee and attended St. Stanislaus.

Paul and John Kobs arrived first and then were followed by their sibilings: Felix, August, Julianna (Bonk), Otilia (Malek), Magdaline (Malek), Pauline, Rosalia (Wloszczynski) & Katarzyna.

Any information about the history of these families is helpful. I have information to share.

I am searching for the family of 5 soldiers who was killed in the Korea War. When they entered service they gave Milwaukee County, Wisconsin as their home of record.

Soldier: NORBERT ORLANDO ANDERSON
Born: 1932
Date of loss: Feb. 14, 1951

Soldier: LESLIE JAMES DELUCA
Born: 1931
Date of loss: July 16, 1950

Soldier:JOHN RAYMOND JALAS
Born: 1930
Date of birth: July 18, 1952

Soldier: LEONARD JOSEPH KOSCIELAK
Born: 1924
Date of loss; September 1, 1950 MIA

Soldier: ARTHUR MAJESKE, JR (West Allis)
Born: 1932
Date of loss: July 12, 1950 POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 36 families from Wisconsin that have not been located. There are 5 families from Milwaukee County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (78 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Would like directory assistance for an address 1900-1940's

Hello,

Is there anyone with access to telephone/address directories for Milwaukee for the 1920-1940's era? I'm hoping to pinpoint an approximate date of death/residence for the following 2 people:

KRUEGER or STREESE, Bertha, lived alone at 1029 3rd St 1930, she was first married to a KRUEGER, was living with a Wilhelm STREESE at this address until ~1924, is listed in 1930 census there(widow). Not sure if they were co-renters or got married to Wilhelm, so could be listed either as a Krueger or a Streese/Strese surname. She was born in the 1830's so I doubt she lived past 1940, if even that far.

ZIPFEL, Pauline S., born 1876, last known Milwaukee address was Concordia and Green Bay Ave in 1900. So we would be interested mostly in listings in the 1900-1910 time period, since she may have gotten married anytime after that, and if so, her married name is not known by us.

Thanks so much for any help,

Sincerely, Pam in California

looking for researcher for archives library or vital records

Hello,

I'm interested in a referral for someone who might be able to do some small research for a fee in the archives of UWM and/or finding a death record for the time period 1923-1924, not clear where that vital records book would be.

In the archives, I'm looking to check a microfilm of old church records, and 2 boxes of carpenter union records. The catch might be that some of the church microfilm records might be in German. . . ??!! However, if they are clearly written, it might just need to be a page machine copied if a name is found(I could get translated), and I don't know if there is an index or not. . .

Apparently, the death record question involves looking through the books for either of the 2 years for the family name, (this might be at the vital records office); I cannot find a specific death date but have narrowed down the death to these 2 years.

Any leads for help would be appreciated. Please respond if possible directly to my email as I don't seem to get response alerts from Ancestry.com. Thanks!!

Pam California

Viola/Csaszar

I would be very greatful if someone could look up a marriage for me: the groom was Frank Viola, the bride Verona Csaszar. They were Hungarian immigrants who got married in Milwaukee(according to their obituaries) around 1910. There is a possibility they got married in Kenosha, as they were also in that vicinity around the same time.
Anyway, what I would like to have is a Catholic church record of the marriage, along with the civil record. Perhaps someone could look up the civil record and get the name of the priest that performed the ceremony, and look him up in the city directory to find out which church he was at, and then either look at the microfilm for that church, if it's available at the library, or give me the name of the church so I can order the film from the LDS family history center. Either way, I would like a copy of the civil record/marriage application, either an electonic copy or hard copy.
Thank you very much
Chris Kovach

Hello,

Looking for any connections/information for a Carl TIMM family that lived in Milwaukee ~1870.

Carl was married to a Caroline KRUSCHKE, they were both from Soldin, Germany/now Gorzow Wielpolski region currently Poland. There was a birth or christening listing for daughter for them, an Anna Emilie Friedrike Henriette TIMM, 14 July 1870 Milwaukee, from a German church erroneously listed as Trinity Evangelical Lutheran on an LDS film. There is a TIMM family linked to my STREESE family from that same area.

Thanks for any leads for information! Please preferably respond to my email as well; pgosl@comcast.net since I often don't receive alerts to these threads.

Pam in California

Herman
was born Milwaukee 1897 I believe.

Leffmann, Rudolph

Looking for anyone who knew Rudolph, came to USA in 1908, settled in
Milwaukee until approximately 1930, went to Neeskera School, married an Edna Olive Streese in 1915, roomed with a Louis Hellberg until that time.

Streese(or Striese), Edna

Edna was born in Milwaukee in 1894, and orphaned at an early age, born to
Johan Wilhelm Streese and Emma Zipfel. Having trouble finding this Streese family and/or any other information on Edna.

Hellberg, Louis

Louis Hellberg lived with Rudolph Leffmann in Milwaukee from somewhere between 1908 and 1915.

Thanks so much for this board!!

Sincerely,

Pam Gosling

In 1946 when his mother died in Duluth, MN, he is mentioned in the obituary living in Milwaukee. In the same epistle is written that his mother has five grandchildren. Since I earlier have found that Oscar’s brother and sister only have three children, I assume that also Oscar had a family. My hope is that someone in the area has knowledge of this family, or knows where to search for information.

Thanks in advance!
Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone has any other ideas of where we've missed searching for a death of my g-grandfather who lived in Milwaukee through 1930 census at least, but has never been found again. I believe all the library indexes for deaths have been searched by others(not sure but I think so)and so far no burials have turned up, he is not buried with the immediate family in Milwaukee, etc. Of course, he could have gone elsewhere, but so far no trace of him where other family has gone either. ..

Does anyone know of anything or any other place or website to search for deaths of people that just seem to disappear??

The name is Johann Friedrich Wilhelm STREESE, he went mostly by Wilhelm STREESE, lived on Third Street Milwaukee 1930 with a Bertha, can't find if he ever married this person either, she could have been a relative. He was a carpenter in the local Milwaukee union but never learned English and his only remaining child Edna was adopted by an uncle (surname Zipfel) in early 1900's. He was born 1844 in Germany and emigrated 2x/ to USA, lastly 1881. He married my grandmother at Friedens church, which eventually was absorbed into United Church of Christ, but they have no record of the family after their marriage. When I searched an LDS film for the church, there was a marriage in 1922 for a Rosa geb STREESE but I haven't been able to confirm exactly where her family was either, nor find her in the marriage indexes.

So, any leads of where to search next would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you, Pam in California

Hello,

I understand that sometimes marriage APPLICATION records have more information than the actual marriage certificate itself; does anyknow know if Milwaukee has application information available?? And, if so, is that something we can request by mail, or does one need to go to the courthouse?? What dates are available??

Thanks so much for any help for information on this

Sincerely, Pam G.

I'd greatly appreciate a look up for the obit of Joseph / Josephus Hobaugh. What I have so far:

Name: Joseph Hobaugh
Date of Death: 5/16/1894
Date of Burial: 5/16/1894
Age at Death: 63
Marital Status: Unknown
Last Address: Little Sisters
Funeral Home:
Cemetery: Calvary Cemetery
Location: Block: 1
Section:
Row: 68
Lot: 2
Grave:

Wisconsin Deaths, 1820-1907
Name: Joseph Houbough Death Date: 15 May 1894 County: Milwaukee Volume: 19 Page #: 0436 Reel: 077 Image: 0701 Index Volume: 06 ImageNum: 102298 Sequence #: 166924 Level Info: Wisconsin Vital Records Death Index.

His daughters married, Jacob Schweitzer, John Dougherty and Dennis Sullivan.

He is buried in same cemetery as his mother, Mary Landre Hobaugh Kizer:
Name: Mary Kizer
Date of Death: 4/18/1881
Date of Burial: 4/18/1881
Age at Death: 75
Marital Status: Unknown
Last Address: 306 Fowler St
Funeral Home: Peacock
Cemetery: Calvary Cemetery
Location: Block: 3
Section:
Row: 55
Lot: 10
Grave:

I don't know if obituaries exist for 1881 or 1894. Would love contact with descendants in these lines. I'm also greatly curious as to why they are buried in a Catholic Cemetery as it's the first reference we have to them being or converting to the Catholic religion.

Mary was married 2nd to Wright Kizer. No death for him has been found although it's probable he also died in Milwaulkee.

Definate connections to the Addison Maynard line mentioned in previous post.

Hi, I've started working on family history for my family here in California. My Great grandparents were Phillip Theophil Brodell b. 1882 d. 1961 and Mary Mason Brodell b. about 1884 d. 1966.

am stuck because census records show that both were born in Wisconsin but there is no trace of who the parents where. Phillip Theophil could also be Theofil Brodell. My grandparents were Leon Brodell and Ruth Schaafs.
Ruth's parents were Francis Schaafs and Nathalia Werner.

If anyone has any family information on any of the individuals mentioned to share I would be very grateful. Thank you!

Hello,

Does anyone know how any other way to get carpenter union records other than UWM?? They have listings of records in their archives but charge $15/half hour to search.. . .and I'm too far away to search myself; it appears from the information I can find online about the union itself looks as if they no longer have old records; does anyone know anything about this?? I understand they did payouts of members upon their death.

I'm looking for a Wilhelm STREESE/STROESE/STRUSE/STRESE, who died 1924, but I have yet find a specific date of death.

Thanks for any leads for information.

Sincerely, Pam in CA

Railroad accident.

His father was William CAUSIER.

Thomas was living in Milwaukee at 188 Williams Street in 1891. Two generations of Charles Causiers lived at 188 Williams Street.

I would like to know who Thomas was in relation to Charles CAUSIER who was born in 1836 and died in 1912. He also lived at the Williams St. address. Thomas and Charles are buried next to each other at Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee.
Help finding Milwaukee Rozmarynowski family descendants in this link:

Can anyone help me to find descendants of this Rozmarynowski family that is written about in this article:

http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/wlhba/articleView.asp?pg=1&a...

It states that Casimir Rozmarynowski came to Milwaukee in 1868 with his family of seven... his mother, brother, and a sister who died before leaving Ellis Island. He does not mention any other siblings. I have reason to believe that one of the unmentioned siblings may be a family member I am searching for, based on addresses in Milwaukee that I have found. In the 1880 census, it looks like his mother may have remarried, but Casimir, his brother Joseph, and his brother Albert all lived in his step-father's home.

Please - if anyone can help - please contact me.
Lorie

Hi,

Attempting to assist a cousin in learning more about her grandfather, Anton POSHEPNY. Is the POSHEPNY surname familiar to anyone or does anyone have any idea what region of Bohemia this surname might have been most common?

Here is what we know thus far: Anton POSHEPNY was born in 1862 in Bohemia. He came to the US about 1881 and settled in Milwaukee, WI where he became a prosperous baker. He married Anna MAERTZ (daughter of Karel MAERTZ (MARZ/MERZ)and Josephina HAJEK) in 1884. He resided in Milwaukee the rest of his life. He and Catherine had the following children who survived to adulthood: Charles J Poshepny 1884-1959, Anton Poshepny 1888-1916, John C Poshepny 1893-1980, Joseph Poshepny 1898-1978, Frank Poshepny 1901-1979, Mary Poshepny 1904-1927.

We have census and burial information for Anton, have been unable to locate immigration information as yet.

If you can assist or have any connection to this family we would very much like to hear from you

Seeking descendants of Roy & Esther (nee Janke) Rife of Milwaukee

I am searching for my second-cousin Diane, born about 1944 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA, only child of Roy Rife and Esther nee Janke Rife. Roy was born possibly on 06 Aug 1902 and died probably in Milwaukee, possibly in Apr 1966 [these dates are for the only Wisconsin Roy Rife in SSDI]. Esther was born about 1911 in Milwaukee, and died probably in about the 1960s in Milwaukee. Roy, Esther & Diane lived in the 1950s possibly near the intersection of 13th & Walnut Streets in Milwaukee, according to my recollection. Diane might/might have attended North Division High School in Milwaukee. Roy and Esther were avid breeders of parakeets / budgerigars.

Esther's parents were Emil and Augusta "Gustie" ( nee Gohlke ) Janke. Emil and Augusta lived on North 23rd St, between Hadley & Locust Streets, in Milwaukee, according to my recollection, nearly across the street from Emmaus Ev Luth Church, which they attended. Esther had two brothers--Edward and Arnold, both deceased.

Hi,
I'm just checking to see if anyone may have an idea to where a German Catholic may have been buried in abt 1850-51. The guy concerned, Johann Thinnes, I believe emmigrated abt 1846 and was married in Old St Mary's in 1849. I've checked the archdiocese site with no luck and am a bit out of ideas. If anyone has an idea I'd appreciate hearing from you

Dave

Is is possible to access records somewhere without actually going to Milwaukee to find Wisconsin Marriages before 1973 and/or Births and Deaths after 1907? So far, I have found, state records are non existent for those years. Can someone tell me where to look? Travel is not in the picture at this time.

I'm trying to track down the wife and children of Gordon D. Roberts of Milwaukee. His wife was Lucille Duberstein Roberts. He is buried at Wanderer's Rest Cemetery in Milwaukee. At the time of his death, Lucille was living at 2734 N. 37th Street in Milwaukee. I'm sure she has remarried, but I have no information on a second spouse.

At the time of his death, none of Gordon's children appear to have been married. They were David, Debra, Denise, and Daniel. I am about a 3rd cousin once removed.

I am writing a huge family history of the Roberts family back to its Smith origins, and want to be able to include more information on Gordon and his family.

Hi. I was wondering if someone familiar with Milwauk would be able to help. I am looking for more information on a Albert Mueller. In the 1900 Census, he is found on 7 Ward Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Roll 1801 Box 2, Page 190. The notation on the side says East Waters (Walters?) Street. His occupation is given as a Saloon Keeper. I have not been able to check the 1910 7th Ward Milwaukee Census yet. He was born in the State of Minnesota, both parents being from Germany in September of 1852. Can anyone suggest where to go next? Thanks

I'm looking for information on a business in Milwaukee around 1924. When my great aunt died in 1924, she was listed as a forelady in a paper box factory in Milwaukee. She lived on 540 28th Street in the 19th ward. I also have a school photo of her older brother. He appears to be about 9 or 10 years old in the photo, so I'm guessing that it was taken between 1910 and 1912. It was taken along with the teacher and other students. What schools would have been in that area of 28th Street at the time. They attended church at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church on North Ave.??? Any help would be greatly appreaciated.
Thank you.
I would like any information on relatives from my mother's side. My Grandmother was Helena Scheerens who was born in Groede, the Netherlands. Her parents were Jacob Scheerens and Sara Israel. Jacob was born in Groede on 13 Oct 1864 and his parents were Jacob Scheerens and Helena Smit. Sara was born in Nieuwvliet on 04 Sept 1867 and her parents were Kobus Israel and Magdalena Boekhout. Jacob and Sara left Groede with their children on 26 Feb 1900. Their last child was born in Greenfield, Wisconsin and they lived in this area for an undetermined amount of time. Would like any information about or contact with family members. We don't know very much about this side of the family. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
