Burials in 1850's

My great great great grandfather, Johan Christian Ehrhardt, died sometime between 31 Oct 1856, when he filed his Declaration of Intention to become a citizen and the 1860 census which was completed on 8 Aug 1860. He was living on the Wolf river just east of New London.

Can anyone help me understand where someone dying during this period and in this remote area might have been buried or how the family might have handled the burial/death?
