The family of Allen Willard Smith has been FOUND in central Wisconsin and their contact information has been forwarded to the appropriate casualty agency by Harold Davis.
Allen Willard Smith was born in Almond Township on 6 August 1926 to Albert R. Schmidt/Smith and Louise (Boelter) Smith. Although his name appears on various Korean War casualty lists, it was unclear if his origins were in Portage County or the CITY of Portage, Wisconsin.
For unknown reasons, Smith's name is NOT included in the list of Korean War casualties recorded by Malcolm Rosholt in his history of Portage County -- "Our County, Our Story" published in 1959.
Although Smith's remains have not been recovered, he has a marker in Hillside Cemetery, south of WI Highway 54, on Wolfe Lake Road in the Town of Lanark (northeast of Almond) in the southeastern portion of Portage County.
His marker is next to his parents, and his name is shown as "Allen W. Schmidt."
Hopefully, this information will be of interest to Portage County researchers and to others interested in recognizing the sacrifices of our military personnel during the Korean War.
It was well worth a few hours' research to connect this soldier with his "lost" family and to help assure that he receives the recognition he deserves.
