DEATH OF AN EARLY SETTLER
Mrs. Margaret Robinson West, of Evansville,
Passes Away at Elgin, Ill.
Evansville, Wis.,Dec. 21—Mrs. Margaret
Robinson West died at the home
of her son, James R. West, at Elgin,
Ill., Dec. 19,1898, of cancer, aged 84
years. The remains will be brought to
this city for interment. The funeral
will be held in the M. E. church, Wednesday
at 2 o'clock.
Mrs. West was a native of Ohio, and
was married to Jacob West in Champaign
county, Ohio, in 1831. They
came to Rock county, Wis., in 1840, and
settled one-half mile from the center of
the present city of Evansville. She has
been an active member in the M. E.
church in this city since its organization
in August, 1840, and in her death the
church loses its last charter member.
Jacob West, who died several years
ago, was the first mail carrier in 1849,
the mail at that time being brought
here from Union. Eight children were
born to them, five of whom are living,
one son, Joseph H. still residing in this
