Mildred L. Fonger Compton, 83, Superior, died Wednesday, April 24, 1996, in St. Mary's Medical Center Hospice Unit in Duluth.
She was born in Poplar to Herman and Anna Wallin. She graduated from Central High School. She married Fred W. Fonger on Aug. 30, 1930. They moved to Superior in 1942.
She was an aide at the former St. Francis Hospital, the former St. Mary's Hospital, and the former Superior Memorial Hospital, from which she retired in 1977. She was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church and several senior citizens groups. She served on the election board for many years and volunteered at several area nursing homes.
Her first husband, Fred Fonger, died in 1973; her second husband, Cecil Compton, died in 1986; and a son, Lee A. Fonger, died in 1971. She is survived by two sons, Dennis Fonger of Shawano, Wis., and Col. Michael Fonger of Cottage Grove, Wis.; a daughter, Joanne O'Brien of Iron River; four stepsons, William and Willmar Compton, both of Bayfield, Kenneth Compton of Barnes and James Compton of Washburn; six stepdaughters, Joyce Angel of Cloquet, Florine Olson of Iron River, Avis Brenny of Bella Vista, Ark., Violette Weber of Bayfield, Patricia Barningham of Greshim, Wis., and Judy Meierotto of Bayfield; a sister, Alice Perrott of Portland, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
Visitation: 9:30 until the 11 a.m. services Saturday in Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Superior. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Superior. Memorials preferred to Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Arrangements are by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home in Superior.
