Greetings, Monica. Thanks very much for your note. My family and I would be THRILLED to have that picture of Carrie Polley's mother. Do you have a scanned copy that you could email to me?

According to the information I have, Carrie's mother was Evelyn C. Polley (sometimes spelled Eveline or Evalina, maiden name Norwood). Evelyn was born October 29, 1849, date of death unknown, but she was alive on June 5, 1919, the day of Carrie's wedding to Emil Ohman.

Carrie's father was William John Polley, who was born in August 1847 somewhere in Canada and immigrated to the USA in 1868. We don't know exactly when he died. He was alive and 52 years old in the 1900 census; in the 1905 census, his wife is listed as widowed.

Can you offer me any suggestions how I might learn when William and Evelyn died? Do you have records of births and deaths for Gilman area? If I can have a link to the files, I'd be glad to do my own research.

Lastly, I'm hoping to learn how William John Polley was related to James Polley (1848-1925), the founder of Polley, Wisconsin. William John and James were only a year apart in age; I have wondered if they could be brothers or more likely cousins. Is there a family tree available for James?

Many, many thanks for any help you can give me! My email is ymiranthis(at)ymail(dot)com.

Kindest regards, Yvonne Miranthis

Murphy: death notices needed for Roy, Ralph, Lloyd & possibly Edna.

This exact post was originally posted on the Wood Co. WI message board.

Roy Murphy b. Apr 12, 1906 IL or IN, res: Maplehurst, Taylor, WI, d. .Oct 21, 1970 Marshfield, Wood, WI, bur: Riverside Cem: Withee: Clark, WI

Ralph Murphy b. Oct 14, 1916 Iroquois, Iroquois, IL, d. Mar 23, 1974, Milwaukee, WI.

Lloyd Murphy b. 29 Apr 1919, Iroquois, Iroquois, IL, bur. King WI, d. 21 Jan 1972, Milwaukee Co., WI.

All three of the above at some time lived in Maplehurst, Taylor, WI.

Hoping that a researcher will check for the death notice of Roy Murphy husband. of Alice Stacy. I am trying to connect him to a Ralph Murphy who was born in Iroquois, Iroquois, IL Oct 14, 1916 and died on Mar 23, 1974 in Milwaukee, WI. A Milwaukee Sentinel article on Ralph’s widow, nee Fischer said he was buried in Marshfield. I do not know if that means the general area or the city itself. He was Roman Catholic. He might be buried with the Victor Fischer family.

There is a third brother, Lloyd, who is buried at the military cemetery at King WI. His dates are b. 29 Apr 1919, Iroquois, Iroquois, IL, d. 21 Jan 1972 in Milwaukee Co., WI. His death information could have been in a Marshfield or Taylor Co. newspaper.

There was a fourth bro Warren b abt 1909 Custer City, Custer, OK. By the 1920 census he is not listed with the family so I assume that he died.

Finally there was a sister Edna b 1913 in OK. She is not listed on the 1930 census with her father and sibs. She might have married at 16 or died.

On Ancestry I met a descendant of Roy who would also like to have Roy’s death notice and possible obituary.

I live in Milwaukee and have computer access to the Milwaukee Journal, Sentinel and later the combined Journal-Sentinel from 1990 on. Some issues are missing mostly in 1990. I would be happy to search Milwaukee death notices and obits or any article from that period in exchange for someone searching for Roy, Ralph and Lloyd.

I would also search the Milwaukee papers for people on this board who need that assistance. If a notice is needed from an earlier time period I could check the microfilms at the main library. That would take more time to get done.
Hello, I am not related. I think you have the wrong Hulda immigration. I think I found John & Hulda in the 1900 Illinois census, with son Williar, and who may have been Hulda's mother Hannah Swanson. Both immigrated in 1884.

Also, it looks like John & Hulda married in Rock Island county, Illinois in 1898. The marriage record may not have the parents names, but maybe you could try to obtain a church marriage record, possibly in Moline.

I only looked at the 1900 & 1910 census. Hope this helps.
Greetings, shestandsfirm:

My maternal grandparents were Carrie Ohman (nee Polley) and Emil Ohman, who after their marriage resided in Polley, Wisconsin, and later in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where their only child, my mother, was born.

I understand you have pictures of the town of Polley. I have only ever seen a circa 1906 picture of the white, steepled one-room schoolhouse where my grandmother attended lessons. Do your pictures exist in an electronic form anywhere on the web, or could they be emailed to me? I'd be very grateful for the chance to see them. If that's not possible, maybe you could send me an email or snail mail address for the geneologic society you shared them with. If you like, you can contact me at [my user name] [at] ymail [dot] com. Many, many thanks!

Hi,
I am so excited to hear from you. I am Betty's grandaughter. My father is the baby Betty gave up for adoption when she was 17 yrs old. Betty passed away this year, but I traveled to Arizona several times and met her, and we talked on the phone alot.
I have some photos from her, I put some on ancestry, but I have others. I don't have too much information on Roberts family. Who is your husband? She wanted me to get in touch with someone in Green Bay, but I never did.
Stacy

Good morning Kathy...

My ancestral heritage is 50% Prussian and 50% Saxon.

My mothers family was from Ostpruessen (East Prussia, near Lithuania), my paternal g. grandfathers family was from the Rheinland (near France).... both under the Prussian flag.

My surname ancestors were from Herzogtum Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha (today Thüringen), and my maternal g. grandmothers family was from Sachsen (Saxony, by Austria). Both considered non-Prussian.

And Prussia and the rest of the others (German speaking states) did not particulary care for each other!

After immigration to either New York (harbor), Castle Gardens or Baltimore, they migrated to South Manitowoc or Sheboygan Counties, Wisconsin, then to Northeast Clark County.

My surname line then migrated to Medford in the 1950's.

Kansas (a hotbed of Germans from Russia) has quite a number of origanizations and online listings of surnames that were ethnicaly cleansed from the Ukraine during the Russian Revolution of 1918. Other states that received an influx of Russian Germans were Colorado, Nebraska, North and South Dakota and up into the wheat growing areas of Canada. Googling is your best bet for this type of information!

As for Danes in Florida. Just a bit to the south of where I live (Ft. Lauderdale), is a city named Dania, named after a very large group of Danes that migrated there because of the Winter crops growing area in the 1930's, '40's and sort of tailing off in the 1950's when housing took over the farm fields. Not sure if they have any surname registry for the pioneers. The county that it (Dania) is located would be Broward. At one time (before Broward was established), it was the very northern part of Dade County (Miami).

This is kind of getting away from your original query. If you need to get back to me, use my eMail: rloss[a]bellsouth.net

Have a great day. Bob

Hulda Swanson immigrated from Sweden on Nov 29, 1893

Hello!

My name is Kathy Henning and I am looking for my ancestors.
Apparently, my great grandmother... Hulda Swanson...)Hulda Augusta Maria) or any other variations...immigrated from Sweden. Presumably, from Smoland Sweden. She arrived at Ellis Island on nov 29, 1893.

She was 16 years old at the time she arrived.
From the ship's manifest...it appeared she came alone...sans family members. But she did come with a group of girls her age as shown on the immigration document.
All of these brave girls came to the USA to be "servants" to various families on their arrival.

Their employment had apparently been prearranged between "agents" in NY and Sweden.

Hulda arrived to the USA and headed towards a servant position in Chicago.

She eventually married a John Peterson, who immigrated to the USA, a single man...from Sweden also.

The paper trail goes cold for me there.

Hello!!! Do you know how many John Petersons emigrated in the late part of the 1800's and early 1900's? About 650 of them!

It was too many for me to figure out. Thank goodness for more unique names!

Hulda and John gave birth to 3 children.

Florence Petersen (my AWESOME grandma).
Her sister Alice Petersen.
And I believe...a son Williard. Could be wrong about that.

Florence Petersen became Florence Johnson, after she married my dear grandfather, Ellsworth Theodore Johnson.

Both were outstanding people! My grandpa Ellsworth, though he did not complete high school because of economic reasons...still became an engineer and designer at the original headquarters of John Deere Plow and Planter in Illinois. Grandpa Johnson helped design the "corn picker" machine that changed the speed and ease of American farming altogether!
Go grandpa! Yay grandpa!

If anyone has any information about these wonderful people, I sure would appreciate it!

Most sincerely,
Kathy Henning

Anyway... as Ellen Degeneres would say...
I am just hoping that someone out there has information about Hulda Swanson!

George Emil Henning immigrated from Denmark(march 16, 1910). He had a brother Peter Larsen who immigrated from Denmark also, probably around the same time period. He however did not change his name as my grandpa did. Word is he lived in Florida.

I am looking for information about him if anyone knows anything!
Thanks everyone!
Take care!
Happy hunting!
Kathy Henning
kathy@hammeringgirl.com
Been watching/reading your Hauch family stories with interest.

First off, I am not related but have been in and out of the 'Germans from Russia' sites for many years.

This may be of interest to you: http://www.ahsgr.org/

A bit of history. Catherine the Great was German royalty that married into the Tzar's of Russia. She was from Westpruessen (West Prussia) originally. She was the instigator of bringing German farmers to the Ukraine (including Volhynia) for the reason they (Germans) knew more about farming than the locals. The Germans were given automomy (in regards to government, religion, laws) of everything they had in Germany.

Then, the Russian Revolution and most likely some jelousy of the locals and they were forced out, either to Germany, America, Canada, Brazil or Australia.

So... didn't matter if you were born in Russia (Ukraine), if you had German blood, you were gone and so was your land and businesses.

I will let you get back to your Hauch business!

Regards, Robert Lipprandt
(South Florida)

My wife's line were cousins to your line. They came to Berrien County, Michigan from Russia in 1904. Several members of this Hauch family settled here including a sister of your Herman, Louise (Hauch) Strunk. I will send you a descendant chart that will explain the connetion better. I am still trying to locate the origins of the original Hauch in Volhynia, Russia, who was named Christian Hauch back in Germany. They were germans who were living in Russia, not Russian.

Thank you so much for my great grandfather's obit.
My grandmother Theresa Hauch, married einer larsen who immigrated march 16, 1910, most likely at 20 years of age.
He came from Odder Denmark, but it was said he was born in copenhagen. He was a cobbler. He refused to teach his sons the trade as he wanted them to have a better life. Grandpa fought in many major battles during world one 1. He is buried in the military cemetary on arsenal island, in Illinois, along with grandma.(Theresa Hauch). When Theresa was 16, she left rib lake and joined her older sister mary in mpls. to work as a waiter. She was promoted to cashier and that is how she met einer, her future (cantankerous) husband, who was about 13 years older that her.

Grandfather (theresa's husband) changed his name to george emil henning. he did this because as "einer larsen", everyone thought he was a swede. They had 3 children, a boy named donald,a daughter joyce, and my dad, george emil henning jr.They had relocated to rock island, illinois by then where they stayed until their death. My father george was vice president and director of admissions at Augustana college for many years. He still resides there and just had his 80th birthday.

My grandma theresa had a fine wit about her. She liked her husbands original name better than his new one. Her first son was born healthy and grandpa wanted a son named after him. she refused. when dad was born, he had jaundice and they thought he probably wouldn't make it. so she volunterred to name him george sr.and...to their surprise...he lived. For years through her 80's and 90's they would together tell the story about how she thought she could bury the name with the child. She was quite the wonderful character and her stories go on and on!

My dad George in late adulthood nearly died 3 times from a blocked intestine. 2 out of 3 of those times required lifesaving surgery. Dad thinks that this is probably how Herman Hauch passed away as he remembers shortly before he passed, the poor guy said something to his wife like..."if i could just go to the bathroom, i feel like I would be fine." (told to him by grandma)

Now, keep in mind grandpa henning didn't like swedes more than a little bit. i imagine probably because of the wars denmark and sweden had.

Dad in turn married my mom..."jeannine Johnson" a full blooded swede. There was a large population of swedes that settled in illinois. Evidently, the danish swede combination didn't work too well for them either, as they divorced after having 3 children... my older sister jeanne, myself, and my younger brother bill(william). Jeanne now has 4 children(one adopted from korea)My brother has 2 children. And I have 2 dogs!

Mom's grandmother hulda swanson, immigrated from smoland sweden, an area of extreme poverty, nov, 29, 1893.
She came to the usa at age 16, alone, but with a group of girls who arrived to be servants and start a better life. Hulda had a servant position waiting for her in chicago... the city it is said...was founded by a mass immigration of swedes who came in at least 3 great waves due to famine all around.

There is a little bit of family history for you!
Take care,
and thank you!

kathy Henning

I have been trying to get the lady who posted the Rib Lake group on find a grave to transfer them to me. She added the obituary I sent her for Lena but then has not responded.
Adolph appears to have been a cousin to Fred, Herman and John. John died in Canada. There was also a sister, Louise. John, Herman, Fred and Louise all came from Volhynia, Russia to America. They appear first in New Jersey and then Wisconsin. I have quite a bit of information on this family as my wife was a Hauch. Her branch settled in Berrien County, Michigan as did Louise. I would be glad to send you the information if you are interested.
Hi!

I am researching my family history.
We seem to have a name in common.
That would be Herman Hauch.
If my research is correct, he immigrated to ellis island NY USA on Oct 16, 1895 from Russia. He was 20 years old.

Not much in between is known by me. I know little of this Herman Hauch's history until he married Lena Lachenski (or Lena Leschetski. (2 different spellings of her name in her obituary. Geez! They lived in RIB LAKE, WI.

I found this out by reading both obituaries from Rib Lake "find a grave site".

One of their children, my grandmother, Theresa (Hauch)Henning, lived to be 104, and passed on May 18, 2007.

Herman Hauch and his wife were farmers.

Do you suppose you and I are looking at the same family tree?

If so, do you know if he emigrated with his brother's, family, friends, etc?

I would be glad to share with you what we know about relatives if you think we might be connected!

Would love to hear from you,... and learn more!

Sincerely,
Kathy Henning
Seattle Washington
360-303-3975

Oscar is a brother, there was also a Henry my grandfather, Paul, Robert, Adolph I'd have to check my records can't recall if there were more brothers. I thought Jeri's mom was Geraldine but I'd have to double check. Adolph lived in Antigo, WI. Robert moved to the state of Washington, Tacoma I think. Paul an d Henry are buried in Lakeview cemetary in Rib Lake. Pauls marker has the original spelling of the family name, which is Gruning. Uncle Oscar lived in Appleton, with his wife Minnie. From the old church records it seems the name was changed sometime during WWI no doubt because of the anti German sentiments at the time.

Just wondering if you are still willing and able to do look-ups? I'm looking for the death record of Michael Rahberger born around 1815 in Germany/Austria. He was Catholic and had a son Michael born around 1863-65. Thank you!

I'm looking for information about the Michael Rahberger family and john Schuster family that lived in the area in the mid-1860's to around 1900. Both families I believe were Catholic. Thank you!
