Thank you for your reply! I think we've e-mailed before, one of my next projects will be to "sort out" more of the Stalsbergs, and see how much farther back I can go in Norway records. In a box of old pictures I found a fragment of a photo of Olaus Stalsberg's family, (Olaus holding a small child) I remember seeing it whole when I was a child It would be of all of his children and his 2nd wife I believe. Do you happen to have a copy? I suppose I could publish the fragment, but the whole photo would be better. Thank you for your help!
Thank you for the info. Abby is my great grandmother. I believe she died in Cashton, WI which is in Monroe County. She is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in LaCrosse, WI. liisted as Abby Rogers (second marriage) She had four children by Albert Love!. They are: Pluma, Warren, Albert2 (my grandpa) and Granville. Pluma is also buried next to Abby as is Pluma's daughter Doris "Birdie" Staudacher. Warren died young. About seven years old and is buried in Clinton Ridge Cemetery, Cashton, WI near his grandfather, Clinton Love. Albert2 is buried in Oak Grove Cenetery, LaCrosse, WI. Granville moved to the Seattle area and is believed to be buried out there. His wife, Theresa Shorrels, is buried in LaCrosse, next to her parents. Granville is the one that bought Abby's plot. If you ever find out where Diantha or Abner are buried please let me know. Thanks for your help! Kathy

Diantha was the daughter of Chester Perkins.
His lineage is thus
John Perkins, b 1584>
Jacob Perkins, b 1623>
Joseph Perkins, b 1674>
Joseph Perkins, b 1704
Joseph Perkins, b 1733
Chester B Perkins, b 1799>
It was John Perkins daughter that married Thomas Bradbury and was convicted of withcraft at the age of 77

see this for more info
http://www.thecrimson.com/article/1997/4/2/to-set-the-record...

Diantha's husband Abner Scovill, died at the age of 29, of what I don't know. She likely also died young, as their child Abby Scovile was living with her grandparents, Chester & Celinda in 1860. She was only 15 or 16 when she married Albert Love. She died either in Coshocton, OH or Monroe Co, WI. I have the whole Perkins line back to John if you need it, although it is well documented onthe net

If they are Norwegian.. the childrens last name would be their fathers name followed with -sen or -datter. For example... the Johnson last name would mean "son of John". The Kvaerstuen might be the farm name from where they came from. Here is a link that explains this a little better. It confused me at first and I had a hard time finding ancestors from Norway. Good luck.
http://www.nndata.no/home/jborgos/names.htm

Need a little help with Surnames:
I have a Josepha Johnson that on her birth certificate her mother is Maria Christoferson and the death Certificate say Wigdahl. She went by Josie Hagen but I see the same birth date on records of death, birth, social security but I see both names used Johnson and Hagen along with mother maiden names of Christoferson and Wigdahl.
I see this also with names on the other side of the line. I have a Johan Larsen Kværnstuen where half the children used Johnson and the other used Kvaerstuen.
I'm so very confused! Any help?
I have quite a bit of information on this family but must locate the paperwork I was sent about this family. What I do have access to right away is mostly about their children. Bartholomew's wife was Elizabeth (nickname Betsy/Bessie) maiden name was Short.
The children of Bartholomew Cornell and Betsy Short:

1. Reneldo Cornell sometimes listed as Rinaldo was born November 4 1849 Pennsylvania died May 15 1927 Ontario, Vernon, Wisconsin. He married firstly Anna Nancie Catherwood October 13 1872 the list for Rinaldo in the 1880 census would be with his wife and their children. He married secondly a Jane Thompson.
2. Mary Cornell born January 7 1852 Charles Township, Minnesota died: April 11 1947 Viroqua, Vernon, Wisconsin Mary married firstly Charles Betts in 1874 and secondly Alford Pratt
3. George Cornell born 1855 married: Sarah ? (would be the George listed in the 1880 census)
4. Boney Cornell born December 25 1862 Wisconsin died 1948 Iowa Boney married Elizabeth Butterfuss
5. Clara Josephine Cornell born April 22 1863 Dodge County Wisconsin died: July 30 1962 Huron, Beadle, South Dakota buried: Riverside Cemetery, Huron, Beadle, South Dakota married: firstly: Frederick Elonzo Evens April 28 1878 Vernon County, Wisconsin married second Alfred Henry Pillsbury 1882
a. James Edward Pillsbury February 9 1892 Brillion, Wisconsin died: August 1977 Huron, Beadle, South Dakota married: Carolina M. Graff
b. Stephen Pillsbury married firstly Verna Palmer-McCloud secondly Stella Hagen
c. Elmer Pillsbury
d. Walter Pillsbury
e. Nora Pillsbury
f. Elizabeth Pillsbury
6. Alfred Cornell born February 1865 Wisconsin d: Hillsborough, Vernon, Wisconsin married Lillian Rose Jepson August 1 1886
7. James Edward Cornell born 1868 Tripville, Vernon, Wisconsin died November 9 1947
8. Betsey Jane Cornell born 1874 Wisconsin died Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska married firstly: Asa Gorham
a. Mary Gorham born July 1890 my grandmother told me she believed Mary married someone with the surname of Fitzgerald.
b. Archie Gorham born April 19 1894 died May 1979 Fort Dodge, Webster, Iowa married: Nellie ?
c. Libby Gorham
Betsey married secondly James Patrick Sullivan
Child of Betsey Jane Cornell and James Patrick Sullivan
d. James Fitz Sullivan born March 24 1901 Ontario, Vernon, Wisconsin died January 31 2002 Orlando Florida buried at Meadowlawn Memorial Gardens New Port Richey, Florida James married firstly Marie Naomi Klotz divorced about 1945 after 4 children (Jesse *died at birth*, twin Bessie, James and Naomi) married 2nd Mildred Parry widowed married thirdly Dorothy Michaels 1987 widowed April 2001

James Patrick Sullivan and Betsey Jane Cornell were my great great grandparents. There is a book called An Irishman in the Iron Brigade: The Civil War Memoirs of James P. Sullivan which gives some of this information and has a photo of James P. Betsey and James F. in it. He sadly died when my great grandfather was just a young boy in 1906. Not long after his death, the rivers and creeks of the area, the Kickapoo River runs through Ontario, flooded and destroyed much in the town including the home & office that had been James P's. (He was an attorney). Betsey salvaged what little she could and took the children to Fort Dodge, Iowa to look for work. In the 1930 census she was living with her son James Fitz Sullivan and his family in Omaha, Nebraska. She had a different last name so (I can not recall what it is right this moment) so it appears she had married a third time and been widowed a third time. I do not know when exactly she died yet but know that it was after the 1930 census.

Mary Bradbury was a Perkins. She was famous for being a witch during the Salem witch trials. She was never put to death because the Perkins came from aristocracy. I am trying to trace Diantha back to her. Do you know how Diantha's husband died? He was quite young I think. Their daughter, Abby, is my great grandmother. My grandpa, Albert Love, was one of her children.

I doubt that you'll find any (or many) McFarlane relatives in Idaho, although quite a few migrated from Minnesota to Montana to homestead, some of whom remained in Montana. Some of the others returned to Minnesota.

Edmund McFarlane was born 6 August 1862 at Rosetta, Lanark County, Ontario. In 1881, he emigrated to Minnesota, where three of his bothers had settled. On 26 October 1885, he married Mary Etta Taylor. They had six children, Maude, Elsie Pearl, Joy, Dr. Lloyd Edmund, Etta 'Val', and Lyle K. Mary Etta Taylor died 11 August 1903. Edmund sold his harness shop in Parkers Prairie, MN,and retired in July 1920. In retirement, he moved to Blackfoot, Idaho. There, he married Nora Barker on 10 November 1921 at Idaho Falls. Edmund died 20 December 1935 at Blackfoot, and was buried at Parkers Prairie, MN on 27 December 1935. To the best of my knowledge, that ended the connection of this family to Idaho.

A family document I have says that Jonathan Hunt is from Boston and his father's name is Thomas. I have researched the CT Jonathan, which is Jonathan, Jonathan, then Thomas.

I'm working on the possible Boston Jonathan which matches my family records of Jonathan, Thomas. Have you researched this possibility?

Thanks,
Barb

Jacob and Elizabeth Mlsna arrived
at New Orleans on 13 Dec 1860
on Ship Anna Delius from Bremen, Germany
See attached image of ship passenger list page
Last name misspelled as "Milsna"

I located this record after finding Jacob Mlsna's 12 Mar 1866 Declaration of Intention to become a US citizen in La Crosse County naturalization records (see record in upper left corner of the image at:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-29966-2065-0?c...

The Declaration of Intention recorded that he arrived at New Orleans in Dec 1860 and with that info I was able to find the attached arrival record.

Jacob was issued a federal land patent for 40 acres in the town of Washington, La Crosse County in 1863 (Township: 15-N, Range: 5-W, NW qtr of NE qtr of Section 33 -- that would be east of what is now County Rd PI and about a mile north of the county line).

Jacob and Elizabeth were in Hamburg, Vernon County at the 1870 census with five children (Hamburg is adjacent to and south of Washington, La Crosse County) . Their last name is misspelled as Misner. Elisabeth's parents, Mathias (aka, Matej) and Mary (aka, Maria) Nekola (last name misspelled as Nicolai) were also in the household.

Burial records for the Mlsna and Nekola families are available in La Crosse Library genealogy indexes at http://www.lacrosselibrary.org/genealogy/historicevents.asp

Look there for Matej Nekola, Maria Nekola, Jacob Mlsna, and Elizabeth Mlsna. (Make sure the "Cemeteries" option is checked instead of the Obituaries option.)

Jacob and Elizabeth were recorded on page 20 of the 1880 census at Hamburg, Vernon County, with nine children. The name appears to be written as "Mesna" on the census page (Ancestry.com mangled it as "Meonie" in their index).

The registration of Jacob's "final papers" for citizenship in 1872 recorded his last name as "Mazna" which I think is a Germanized spelling of the name.

That is the spelling of his last name in the record for his marriage to Elizabeth:

Mazna, Jakob (farm laborer of Luznice) and Nekola, Marie of Spoli #24, married 15 Feb 1859 in Trebon parish. Jacob's parents are named in the marriage record as "Jana Mazny" (nominative case would be: Jan Mazna) and "Marie Spevak". http://digi.ceskearchivy.cz/en/8049/281

The 1831 baptism record at Luznice in Trebon parish for "Jacobus Mazna" (born 23 Nov 1831, baptized the next day) son of "Johann Mazna" (Jan Mlsna) and "Maria Spiwak" (Marie Spevak) is at
http://digi.ceskearchivy.cz/en/8032/236

Hello-
We are searching for GGrandfather, Torkel O Sordahl, (think in Norway his name was Olson), b.1858. Immigrated to Veroqua Wis abt 1889 and homesteaded in Crookston MN in 1905, that document shows his name as Torkel O. Sordal (later changed to Sordahl) His grandson thinks he probably had family in Veroqua. He was married to Ingeborg Andersdatter b. 1859 in Norway, they brought over children and Ingeborg's mother abt. 1893. Her mothers name was Asjaerd Hegtveit b 1822.
We heard that Torkel went back and forth at least 3 times before his family came over. Possibly one time with his brother (John or Ole Olson). We have a document in Norweigian stating his name was Torkild Olson Aaland. (Not sure if Aaland was a farm he worked at)
Thanks very much!
Ramona and Joel Calhoun

Olea would be my husbands 1st cousin 3 times removed, there comman ancestors are Knud Olsen Lovlien and Lisbet Olsdatter Jahr. The person before stated she came with her uncle Johannes Lie, Johannes was my husbands great great grandfather. He ended up in Fillmore County, MN. If you go to findagrave -- North Dakota, South Pleasant Cemetery, Richland county, ND there is a picture of her grave. I would love to share info on this line with you.

From current info it appears Olea Olsdatter Kaldor came to America in 1854 with her uncle Johannes Knudsen Lie and his family. Olea was a sister of Marit Olsdatter and Marit & her family (Ole Johannes Lien) came to America abt 1856 and settled in Coon Valley WI. Olea should be "Olia Oslie" mentioned in H. Holand's 1928 "Coon Valley" on page 177. Peder & wife Olia moved to Renville Co, MN. Holand states Peder died in 1868 and is buried in Renville but he only gives Olia's death date as March 25, 1921. She may have moved to and been buried in North Dokata? I haven't found a source for Olea's death in Coon Valley.
Re: Fanta

Brad, I am sorry for not acknowledging and thanking you for the excellent, detailed post you made in May of last year. I do keep it in mind and refer back to it occasionally.

Recently, Brett Ruzek has researched and documented my Fanta immigrant ancestor: Blazej 'August' Fanta and he was born in 1849 in Bukovina, near Kralovice, Plzen-North. Brett also traced back the direct paternal line from Blazej, to Karel Fanta, Sr., married in 1702 in Plana Parish in Plzen-North district. Karel and his son Karel, were potters at Kacerov. So my Fanta line has pretty deep roots in Plzen-North district. Of course, I would still like to know how they got there and it does seem likely that the surname traces back somehow to an assimilitated Jewish migrant in the 1600s (or earlier?).

Your reference to Fantin being an early French variant of the surname caught my eye. Henri Fantin-Latour was a 19th century French painter in whom I have taken a recent interest. Amazing portraits and floral still lifes among his works.

Thank you again,

Richard

Knadle family immigrated from Bohemia in 1858

John and Josephine Knadle and three sons born in Bohemia were one of the early Czech families in Hillsboro, Wisconsin, area, arriving before 1860 census. Based on recent research I find that the family name was recorded in Bohemia as Knedlhans which is also the name recorded for them on the New York ship arrival record.

Last evening I found baptism records for the three sons listed in the 1860 census as born in Bohemia:

Wencil: "Wenceslaus Knedlhans," born 12 Aug 1845, at Kocin near Kralovice (source: RC church baptism record in Kralovice book 12, image 65 of 107, on actapublica.eu)

Frank: "Frantisek Knedlhans," born 7 Oct 1853, at Kocin near Kralovice (source: RC church baptism record in Kralovice book 20, image 27 of 72, on actapublica.eu)

Anton: "Antonin Knedlhans," born 20 May 1856, at Bertin nad Civice (source: RC church baptism record in Plana book 33, image 48 of 201, on actapublica.eu); the baptism record includes a later added note about his emigration to America dated 2 Aug 1858.

The parents listed for these three are Jan Knedlhans, son of Jan Knedlhans of Kocin, and Josefa Fanta, daughter of Josef Fanta of Kacerov. Jan and Josefa are Czech for John and Josephine. Kacerov is just south of Civice which is separated from the Kocin area by a small river or creek valley.

The first two sons listed above were born at their father's hometown and third was born near his mother's hometown of Kacerov.

The family is recorded in the arrival list dated 18 Oct 1858 for Ship Fides as "Knedelhans" with first names: "Joh., Josepha, Wenzel, Frans, and Anton". The correct age is recorded for father Jan/John but not for other four. Obviously wrong ages are recorded for other families so probably a too hurried transcription of the German passenger manifest by the American immigration clerk? Note that another Czech family that came to Vernon County, Wisconsin, was on the same ship and listed at the top of the same page in the arrival list: Wencil Stanek with wife Catherine and three children (Thomas, Marie, and Wencil).

The Knedelhans name was first brought to my attention by Brett Ruzek who mentioned that a Martin Knedlhans settled in Kewaunee County and was from Kralovice area. That slight hint panned out for tracing Knadle family of Hillsboro back to Bohemia. Will look for possible relationship between Martin and Jan/John.
