I think we had the "farm kitchen" version of German food growing up - pork roast & sauer kraut with caraway seed, German sausage with noodles and prunes (?), and a dessert every night (fruit kuchen of some sort was common). In her later years, my mother confessed to craving Düsseldorf style mustard, and devulged rare memories of being plied with Kümmel by her grandmother who called her "meine Bettchen". (I've since used Kümmel in deglazing a pan for roast pork gravy ;-)

My parents favored Karl Raasch' restaurant (and the old Boulevard Inn) and we were treated to after-theater dessert there: the plate-sized apple pancake with lemon and powdered sugar was a favorite and memories of the professional wait staff coming over to greet my parents and meet the family (the golden age of restaurant dining!). I was surprised to return to Milwaukee to find John Ernst Cafe gone and the building split into 3 different spaces.

The German papers are full of the seasonal Bock Bier announcements and Mai Wein adverts.
