Hi again Debbie,

I checked the 1880 Washington County Federal Census and here is what I found. The information for James Helmer might seem a little confusing at first but read through the whole thing.

Page 23 Supervisors Dist. 1, Enumeration Dist. No. 245 for Hartford, Wisconsin.

Lines 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 are all in the same house.

Line 8- Wiley, John. He was a white male that is 53 years old. His occupation is listed as a lumberman. He and both of his parents were born in Ohio.
Line 9- Wiley, Mary (either J or I). She was a white female that was 53 years old. She was John Wiley's wife. Her occupation is keeping house and she and her parents were born in New York.
Line 10- Roberts, John. He was a white male that was 9 years old. He is listed at being the grandson and is going to school. He was born in Wisconsin, his father was born in Canada and his mother was born in Wisconsin.
Line 11- Helmer, James. He is a white male that is 77 years old. He is listed as being the father-in-law and is a widower. He has no occupation and under health, it's listed that he has Aropay (not sure of this spelling nor what it is) of the chest. He was born in New York State as were his parents.
Line 12- Helmer, Loren. He was a white male that is 44 years old. He is listed as being the brother-in-law and is single. His occupation is a farmer. He was born in New York State as were his parents.

At the next house, I found
Line 13- Helmer, Horace. He was a white male that is 49 years old. He is married and his occupation is listed as being a farmer. He was born in New York State as were his parents.
Line 14- Helmer, Charlotte. She was a white female that is 43 years old. She is Horace's wife. Her occupation is keeping house and she and her parents were born in Canada.
Line 15- Helmer, Ellen. She was a white female that is 22 years old and she is the daughter. Her occupation is listed as school teacher. She was born in Wisconsin, her father was born in New York and her mother in Canada.
Line 16- Helmer, Byron. He was a white male that is 15 years old. He is the son and he works on the farm. He was born in Wisconsin, his father in New York and his mother in Canada.
Line 17- Helmer, Everine (not sure of the spelling). He was a white male that is 11 years old. He is the son and he goes to school. He was born in Wisconsin, his father in New York and his mother in Canada.
Line 18- Helmer, Spencer. He was a white male and was 8 years old. He was the son and goes to school. He was born in Wisconsin, his father in New York and his mother in Canada.

On page 48, Supervisor district 1, Enumeration District 245 for the Village of Hartford, I found

Line 23- Helmer, Silas. He was a white male that was 51 years old. He was married and a farmer. He was born in New York State as were his parents.
Line 24- Helmer, Miranda. She was a white female that was 38 years old. She is married and her occupation is keeping house. She was born in Ohio as were her parents.
Line 25- Helmer, Luette. She was a white female that was 14 years old. She was the daughter and she was going to school. She was born in Wisconsin, her father in New York and her mother in Ohio.
Line 26- Helmer, Earle. He was a white male that was 10 years old. He was the son and was going to school. He was born in Wisconsin, his father in New York and his mother in Ohio.
Line 27- Helmer, Ina or Ona M. She was a white female and was 3 years old. She was also the daughter. She was born in Wisconsin, her father in New York and her mother in Ohio.
Line 28- Dewey, Dorothy. She was a white female that was 55 years old. She is listed as being the sister. Under occupation (where they also list keeping house and at school), it says "in assylum". She was born in New York State as were her parents.

I didn't find anything on the Ewer name at all. If you find they were in a different city or town in Washington County, let me know and I'll check for them too.

I hope this helps. Looks like an interesting tree! :)
Paula.
