I only have the 1870 and 1880 Federal Census for Washington County. It looks like you've already checked the one for 1880 so I just checked the 1870 census in Hartford for your Helmers and Ewers. I didn't find anything for Ewer but here is what I found for Helmer.
On page 50, I found
Helmer, S. H. He was a 41 year old white male. He was a farmer and he estimated that the value of his real estate was $4500.00 and his personal wealth was $1820.00. He was born in New York. Also living with his was
Helmer, Miranda. She was a 27 year old white female. Her job is listed as keeping house. She is listed as being born in Ohio. Also living with them was
Helmer, Luett M. She is a 3 year old white female who was born in Wisconsin.
On page 60 I found,
Helmer, James. He was a 67 year old white male. He is listed as being a farmer and he estimates that his real estate if valued at $2500.00 and his personal wealth at $525.00. He was born in New York. Also living in his house was
Helmer, Loren. He was a 84 year old white male. His job is listed as working on the farm. He was born in New York. He is also listed as being deaf and dumb. Also living with them is
Dewey, Dorothy. She was a 45 year old white female. Her job was keeping house. She estimates her real estate value as $1000.00 and her personal wealth as $100.00 (maybe she owned part of the farm?). She was born in New York.
Also on page 60 I found,
Helmer, Jas. H. He was a 36 year old white male. He was a farmer and he estimates his real estate to be worth $2300.00 and his personal wealth at $400.00. He was born in New York. Also living with him was
Helmer, Charlotte. She was a 33 year old white female. Her job is listed as keeping house and she was born in Canada. Their children (they are listed on page 61) were all born in Wisconsin and they are,
Helmer, Ella L. - 12 years old,
Helmer, Byron W. - 5 years old, and
Helmer, Horace E. - 11 months old.
These aren't exact matches with what you requested but these are the only ones I could find in Hartford. If you think they might be in a different city, let me know and I'll check there. I hope one of these Helmers is yours! :) Paula
