"I have Schowalter's in my family. John (or Johan) of Milwaukee in 1860's from Bavaria."

There was a John & Maria Schowalter that published family death notices in Milwaukee's German papers for their 2 yr and 4 yr old sons Frank & Henry in the 1860s, and then 4 yr old Karl and his mother Maria Schowalter in the 1870s. The name John Schowalter crops up in later clippings. These are some of the 100+ Schowalter entries and references found in "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950).
