Surnames: JONEN MICHELS SCHMITZ HOLZEM LENGER LINGER Holzen Hölzen
"... JONEN, MICHELS, SCHMITZ, HOLZEM, LENGER/LINGER lines who lived in the Fussville area in the early 1800-1900's."

Searching for German family names in the history of Milwaukee County and environs? check the local German papers - or the independent indexing project under construction since 2007. All those names are represented in the index today except for "Holzem" (not even a Holtzem). But there are some entries for Holzen and Hölzen. And if you were a farmer in Fussville, or Granville, or like my family, in Tippecanoe or St. Francis (Town of Lake), you probably came into Milwaukee on occasion to sell oats or hay at Haymarket Square and maybe became "known" to the wider community that way (even if you weren't a beer baron).

"Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950).
