Carrie,

Thecla was born 22 Sep 1871 in Barada, Richardson, Nebraska to William Smith McGowan (b: ~1836, Ohio - d: 13 Jun 1903, Barada, Richardson, Nebraska) and Helen C Kelly (b: ~1845, Ohio - d: 28 Feb 1888 , probably Barada, Richardson, Nebraska)

I do not know if you are still an Ancestry member but you can find information on Thecla on my Ancestry Family Tree by first searching on Beniah McGowan and drilling down to his son William Smith McGowen. Thecla is William's eldest child of his second marriage to Helen C Kelly. You can also find similar information on Rootsweb be searching on Theda McGowen (I have not updated Rootsweb since I made the change in the name.

I am descended from Thecla's Grandfather Beniah McGowan through Thecla's Uncle Hamilton McGowan. I am also in contact with a James Gilson descendant who is a closer cousin to you than I might be (her father is a fourth cousin of mine).

Through another 5th cousin, we are getting additional information on William and his family from a Civil War Pension application.

Greg McGowan

I am seeking death/burial information on Betsey JOHNSON COLLINS VanBUREN. Betsey was born about 1848 in Canada to James A JOHNSON and Ann DENT.

On December 22, 1873 she marries widower Tristan CoLLINS in Dakota, Waushara County, WI. They have five children: Susan, Alvin, Myra, Andrew and Henry that I know of.

Tristan dies November 3, 1888 in Dakota. On June 18, 1891 Betsey then marries James VanBUREN of Princeton, Green Lake County.

I then find James VanBUREN on the 1900 census as widowed. James then married Frances Decourcey/Decomsey November 28, 1901. I believe Betsey was James' second wife as James is shown on that 1900 census record with son, Vern who was born in 1875 which would have been before Betsey married James.

What happened to Betsey? I do not find her living with any of her children. Did she die? Did she divorce James VanBUREN? Any direction or help would great!

The first person to be buryed there died in 1868 but she was buried twice. Long story. If the family story is correct it was before 1900. Any clues as how I could find out?

MRS. W. J. KNIGHTS

In the death of Mrs. W. J. Knights on January 16, 1919, this community suffered a loss that will be long remembered and keenly felt. She was taken sick on Sunday, January 5, with heart trouble. In the week that followed she seemed to improve, feeling much better by the last of the week, but early on Sunday morning, January 12, she was taken with apoplexy, which resulted in paralysis. After lingering in that condition for a few days, the end came peacefully on Thursday night at 10 o'clock.

The above death notice of Mrs. W. J. Knights is clipped from the Wild Rose Times.

Mr. and Mrs. Knights are well known in this city, Mr. Knights having been in business here and both of them being very prominent members of the Methodist church, residing here about twelve years.

Later, Mr. Knights accepted a position as a traveling salesman and moved to Janesville, where he became one of the founders of the Gideon organization, and Mrs. Knights became very prominent in foreign missionary work. Later they moved to Wild Rose and have there been identified with every interest for community betterment.

The funeral of Mrs. Knights was held at the home in Wild Rose, on Monday, January 19, interment being made in the Oak Hill Cemetery, District Superintendent W. A. Hall, of Fond du Lac, officiated at the funeral being assisted by the local pastor, Rev. F. Arthur Grunewald, of the M. E. Church, of which Mrs. Knights was a member. Those from away who attended the funeral were: Mrs. J. M. Smart, of Plainfield, two nephews, Edward M. Smart, of Milwaukee and Milton M. Smart of Montello.

Mrs. Knights leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, one only daughter, Mrs. Hoaglin, two grandchildren, two brothers, John M. Smart, of Plainfield; C. A. Smart, of Wild Rose, and one sister, Mrs. Lyon of Whitesboro, N. Y., besides many friends.

February 6, 1919, Evansville Review, p. 1, col. 4, Evansville, Wisconsin

I'm trying to find out more about this family's origins. I think the dau. Catherine and the son-in-law Thomas Campbell are my ancestors who immigrated to PoySippi, WI in 1852, along with Thomas' brothers Patrick, Luke & Edward. The Catherine & Thomas Campbell I am looking for eventually settled in La Clede, ID and had 10 living children out of 12.

I have most of the online info about Thomas Campbell and family after they arrived in the US (census/obits/bios/death certs). It's info about them before emigration I'm looking for.

Do these people look familiar to anyone? Anyone else have Irish Campbells who came to the US from WI > WA > ID after marrying a Wilson in Peebles, Scotland?

Thank you,
Joanna

............................

Piece: SCT1851/768 Place: Peebles -Peebles-shire Enumeration District: 3
Civil Parish: Peebles Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Peebles
Folio: 0 Page: 3 Schedule: 9
Address: High Street Northside

WILSON James Head
M M 55
Pensioner Ag.

Help!I like many of you are frustrated beyond belief. My gg grandfather, William Scranton and wife Jane [Coats]Scranton along with kids Frank and Jenny moved to Springwater in 1860/61. Son Albert was born in 1862 and daughter Elva in 1864. William Scranton and brother-in-law, Lester Coats, joined the 16th Infantry, Co. B in Feb. 1864. Scranton died of typhoid in Brown General Hospital on either July 8, 1865 [per his NARA medical card] or July 24, 1865 [per his widows pension file]. Somehow, Wisconsin's official record shows him as mustered out of the service on July 12, 1865.
I would think there must have been some mention in a local paper of his death and where he was buried. All we have ever heard is 'down South". Are there searchable records somewhere for this time frame? Thanks, Ken Paul

In the early 1860’s John Coon and wife and six children moved from Rochester NY to Belmont WI Sections 20 and 29 (Portage County).

John’s wife was Mary Doyle Coon from Ireland; she died 4/1/1866 (age 35) and was buried at First Belmont Cemetery (Belmont Township Portage County).

John’s father was Abel Coon (b 12/21/1788 Halfmoon, Saratoga County, NY; d 5/28/1870 Lyons, Ionia County, MI). Abel Coon married Maria Withey 3/4/1815 (b 10/25/1797 NY; d 5/27/1833 NY).

On 5/7/1866 John Coon bought 143 acres in Saxeville WI (Waushara County) $1400 cash.
Land: A few miles north of the village of Saxeville, east of Long Lake, north side of S County Road A, County Road E ran thru the property, southwest part of Section 9, excepting a lot with school thereon deeded to school district. (Saxeville Saxville)

History and directory of Green Lake and Waushara Counties (Fox and Dudley) Berlin, WI: Courant Book and Job Office, 1869:
P97 Saxeville Directory – Coon John, post master and proprietor Cedar Lake House, Berlin and Waupaca road.
P122 Hotels – Coon, J., Cedar Lake, Town of Saxeville
P126 Postmasters – Coon J., Cedar Creek

POST OFFICES: Cedar Lake – Established in 1852 in Saxeville Township; discontinued in 1903.

In the 1870 census John Coon’s property had the highest value of any in the town of Saxeville.

4/26/1871: John Coon bought 79 acres in Sections 2 and 3 of Springwater Town for $110 cash.

John Coon died 6/23/1877 at age 59 from a stroke. His death record was recorded in Saxeville; he was buried at First Belmont beside his wife. He had no will.

Three days prior to his death there was a land transaction in Section 9 with his son Charles D Coon; it included a phrase about timber rights.

James Coon (oldest son) was appointed administer of the estate. While the estate was in probate there was a FIRE. Phoenix Insurance Company of Hartford CT paid $1350 to cover a certain dwelling house belonging to the estate. The estate sold two horses, two cows, and farm items. It appears that on 8/5/1879 the estate had a balance of $1764.86 and the estate was closed. The six children were named as heirs (Emma, James, Mary, Charles, Carrie, and John A).

http://www.usgwarchives.org/maps/wisconsin/countymap/waushar...
1906 map. On this map the property is owned by J.C.Peterson; SW corner of Section 9.

http://www.formycousins.com/1878/1878Waushara-Saxville.jpg
1878 map. On this map there are two buildings in Section 9 and it is marked Spring Water Post Office. 1878 is when the estate was in probate; the fire happened during probate.

All additional input is greatly appreciated.
Does anyone have knowledge of this fire?
What kind of structure burned?
Where is Berlin and Waupaca road (the location of the hotel)?
Does anyone have knowledge about the school?
Do I have correct information about the post office?
Was John Coon’s primary business logging and running a boarding house for loggers?

Hello, I am trying to find information on my great great grandfather, Michael O'Dea(O'Day). He was born in Ireland 1822 and died on his farm in the Town of Warren in 1900. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery and was one of the founders of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Berlin. Would his death records be in Green Lake County or Waushara? Do they have records back that far? He was first married to Mary Nugent who died in 1858 and then to another woman named Mary who died in 1900. Both of his wives are buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Berlin. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.

Gein Family

This post is about the Gein Family ancestry, not about the crimes of Ed Gein. The Gein Family lived in Waushara County for forty-two years, and, like it or not, is very much a part of its history.

Surprisingly little has been done on the ancestry of the family, but I now have the answer.

Edward Theodore Gein (1906-1984) was the son of George Gein (1873-1940) and Auguste Lehrke (1877-1945) from La Crosse Co, WI.
Auguste's parents, Frederick Lehrke and Amalia Fregin, were both born in Prussia, and lived in Vernon Co, WI.

Father George Gein was born 'GEORGE GEE,' son of John Gee and Maria Catharine Dingeldein (Dingledine).

John Gee's parents were Merritt Gee and Mary ____ from New York. Maria Catharine Dingledine's parents were George Dingeldein (Dingledine) and Margaret Treusch.

George Gee (Gein) was orphaned at an early age. By 1880 George was adopted and living with his mother's brother, Leonard Dingledine and Leonard's wife in Vernon Co, WI. Soon after his marriage in 1900 George changed his surname from 'GEE' to 'GEIN,' perhaps at the urging of his new wife Auguste.

I have copies of the marriage records for Ed's parents and paternal grandparents to prove all of the above.

STANNARD-BARNES-HUGABOOM-BABCOCK

I am looking to connect with anyone else who is interested in these families which were early settlers in Hancock, Waushara Co. William C. Stannard and son W. L. are buried in Hancock Cemetery; William's wife was Lucy Wooden. Hiram Barnes's wife was Mary Stan(n)ard. Sullivan Hugaboom, brother of Brown C. Hugaboom, married Permelia/Amelia/Emelia Woodin, niece of Lucy Wooden. I think Mary (Stannard) Barnes was the niece of William Stannard, probably the daughter of William's brother, the Rev. Henry B. Stannard of Ohio. Levi A. Babcock married a daughter (Eliza) of William C. and Lucy (Wooden) Stannard. Some of these people are in Winnebago County in the 1850 Census along with another Stannard connection: Washington Manuel and his wife Jane (Stannard) Manuel, who is the daughter of William C. and Lucy Stannard.
They all came west from Ohio to northern Illinois or southern Wisconsin and then migrated first to Winnebago Co. and then some moved on to Waushara County by 1860.

Dee,
thanks, I know about these two graves. William L. is actually in Censuses as either Lewes or Louis; his father is William C. I already checked with the woman who is an officer of the Hancock Cemetery Assn and she confirmed that that 'G' is really a 'C.' I wish William C.'s wife Lucy Wooden had an extant gravestone in that cemetery. Some of her cousins (Hugabooms) are also buried in Hancock Cemetery. Lucy is listed in the 1870 Census for Waushara Co. in Hancock as a "widow farmer." Next I need to check deeds and probate in Waushara County.

judith
