Classification: Query
Surnames: Dull, Hemenway, Hemmingway
If you are all still on this string... My mother (born 1932) knew her aunt Mary Hemmingway Davis. A sister of Mary and Alfred Jr. was Susan Hemmingway Harriman - my mother's great grandmother. The family story is that when Mary died in 1943 the daughters destroyed all of the family records because Eunice Dull Hemmingway was the daughter of Dull Knife and in those days they did not want to be connected to a Native American who was a leader of the opposition to expansion. There is info of Alfred Sr's death in Montana in 1888 that I found on www.findagrave (Benton Ave. cemetery in Helena). I am still trying to verify all of this through Ancestry's records, but...

Apparently (unconfimed) the spelling of the name changed to Hemenway because Alfred jr. only had a 1st grade education and that is how he (and census takers) spelled it. Again, still looking for confirmation on that part.
