Stephen, Thank you for replying to my post. It is always nice hearing from a new cousin. Martha Elizabeth Buck is my gg grandmother. She married J. M. Hughes in Clark Co., Arkansas on January 12, 1873. It appears she may have been the daughter of William Joseph Buck, but am still working on confirming that. Her father was known as "Joe Buck." It is not known what happened subsequent to her marriage to J.M., Her son John Henry Gardner was born in 1882 in Missouri but his father is not known. Then later in life she married Homer Lonzo Woodside. After Lon's divorce or separation from Martha Buck, he married again to Nellie S. Merryman in 1909 but ended up poisoning himself with strychnine, then shooting himself with a gun in Buffalo Co., Nebraska in 1917.
I still haven't been able to figure out the identity of your ancestor J. M. Hughes. I learned a lot about the Jarrards from my visit to Casper, Wyoming in September 2001 with my parents where we saw Marjorie Limmer and Laurie Longtine. And then records we found in Buffalo. I know that Martha had a brother named Ed Buck in Indian Territory as evidenced by correspondence, and that she also had a sister named Mrs. Armstrong from Alabama as evidenced by correspondence from her to Martha.
I hope that more evidence, such as old letters will show up. I would love to see photos of the portraits you mentioned. I'll be emailing you some photos of Martha.
