HARTVILLE, WYOMING - Profile
Picturesque Hartville is one of the oldest incorporated towns in Wyoming established in 1884. It is located in Eureka Canyon - a small community six miles north of Guernsey on highway 270. It is accessible by paved road from the North end of Guernsey State Park and the lake area, in just two and a half miles.

Hartville was first settled in the 1870s by prospectors mining for gold, silver, copper, onyx and iron. At the turn of the Century it was a thriving city. Several of the stone buildings and those constructed with false fronts still stand today. The stone-built town jail held many a "character" in days of yore and is one place you don't want to miss. Today, Hartville is populated by retired miners and a few young families.

The original cemetery, Boot Hill, is crowded with the bodies of men who died wearing their cowboy boots. Gunfights really did take place on Main Street.
Another researcher has a picture of the L. H. Pierce General Merchandise store with a horse tied to the
hitching post and an older couple, and also a younger gentleman standing outside the front door. Street is dirt. There are some old barrels, maybe a hand cultivator for garden use, and some other things along side the store.

Is anyone familiar with the history of the store or the photo company?

I believe the store owner was Lewis Pierce and his wife at the time was Dolly (Haynes).
Hi Cindy,
What was your source for the birth and death records for Ethel and her husband. On the 1910 census her middle initail is "B" not "V" - although those two sounds are frequently mistaken for the other. Also, Ethel was 7 in 1910, putting her birth at 1903...but 2 years difference isn't usually a huge deal. Thanks, Kathy

WoW! Thanks Cindy! I did have the census info, and I knew about Albert's new wife etc - but the info on Ethel and her husband etc - and all the history abt the Lundys - that is so appreciated! Are there sites I can go to to access the articles of history you referred to? The Lundys are my husband's family, and his mother esp. will be excited about this. Please contact me at my e-mail address:
katsjay2@bellsouth.net
Kathy

A quick follow up . 1920 Albert Phelps is in Platte Co, Wy. with wife Inez. Two step children, Otto Brandt age 17 and Lena age 13. There is no Ethel. As for Albert Phelps he was b. April 1877 but there is a Social Security death benefit to one born March 8 1878. Issued in Wyoming and died May 1975 in Washington State, probably Chelem. I could not find Ethel at all in 1920. She may have been working out for someone or with other relatives as she would have been 15. Inez was born in Nebraska.
Good Luck.

Kathy,
I live in Wheatland so looked into your query. I'm sure you noticed that in the 1910 census, Albert is a widower and his mother is living with him and Ethel.
This is what I found for you
Ethel Vale Phelps b. 4 May 1905, Laramie Co, Wy.( Wheatland at that time was in Laramie Co, later it became Platte Co.) Ethel d. 3 Oct. 1977 in Groesbeck, Tx. She married Earl Francis Catron on 7 Oct. 1925 in Joplin, Missouri. He was b. 13 July 1904 in Brumley, Mo, and d. 8 Jan. 1971 in Salem , Ark. His parents were William E. and Frances Hale Catron. It appears they had four children, but no names were given other than Edward. In 1930 Earl and Ethel are living in Stevens Co, Kansas with a son Edward who is about 2 1/2. Next to them is Albert M. Phelps age 54 and a daughter Alta age 9 b. Wy. He is a widower again. It says Altas mother was b. in Nebraska the same as Ethel says, but it wouldn't appear to be the same mother. It could be Inez. I didn't look to see if she was b. in Neb. It looks also that in 1920 they were probably living in Wy. if Alta was b. there. I will check and see if he is but the name is incorrectly spelled.
In the Platte Co, Heritage book it states that Albert Phelps m. Inez VanOrtwick of Platte County. This may have been after Mable died. There is some info on the Phelps and Lundy family. Ethel was not mentioned. A Jay ,Charley, Pearl and Ward Lundy are mentioned. The Lundys were in the sawmill business and at various times had sawmills in several spots around the county. It appears the Lundys moved to Oregon after 1904. There is an article about the Lundys that was recorded in 1970 by Julia Butler who lived up in the mountains where the Lundys lived. When the brothers came to visit they recalled events and places that they remembered. They lived west of Wheatland in an area we call Fletcher Park.
Henry Phelps also had sawmills in the region.
If I find something more will let you know. Questions, let me know.

I'm searching the surnames Phelps and Lundy in WY and am wondering if anyone else is doing the same. I'm especially interested in what happened to Ethel B. Phelps b. 1903 - probably Wheatland. Her parents are Albert Phelps and Mabel Ethel Lundy. Ethel is 7 on the 1900 census and gone by the 1910. Can't find a death or marriage record for her as yet. Any help is appreciated. Kathy

There is a little info about Andrew and Elizabeth Neilson in the Platte Co. Heritage book. It states that the family came to America in 1879 first to New YOrk and then to Pillston, Pa. Andrew Jr. the son came to Wheatland Territory to visit his cousin Duncan Grant. He worked in Cheyenne and saved his money and in 1891 was conveyed land on the Sybille Creek.
He married Ivy Caroline Curtis March 26, 1900 . Andrews mother and father(Andrew and Elizabeth moved to the ranch and occupied their own home sometime later. Andrew Sr was granted a patent Oct 1, 1901 joining his sons land. Elizabeth died in 1903. His father sold his land to son Andrew and returned to Pa to live with his daughter till he died.
I havent found anything about John Grant only a land patent. Duncan Grant wrote about his life and family in the heritage book.He died July 19, 1975.He also wrote about his five years as a wolf hunter in the area.
I can't tell you if Elizabeth is buried in the cemetery but most likely is. I don't have a list of the burials. There is quite a bit on the Grants and the son Andrew Neilson if you are interested.
