Wow this is a tough one. I did find Emiel married to Flora in Montana in 1920 with 3 children William, Katherine, and Margaret, but I haven't been able to place him in Wyoming. I found him again in the 1930 census, still with 3 children and it still lists him as married but does not list the wife's name. Might I suggest you contact the Sweetwater county courthouse and see if they might be able to pull the record for you?

Anyone know anything about a Margaret Dell of Green River? She married Emiel Zietzke in Green River in Aug 1925. Emiel lived in Jefferson County, Montana... She apparently left Emiel after only two months, and Emiel was granted a Montana divorce in 1929. Who is this Margaret Dell?

There is a small write up about him in the Union Pacific Coal Company Employee Magazine, but it does not mention he died in a mining accident. No surprise there. So I pulled his obituary from the news paper.

His obituary says he was working in No. 8 mine. He was struck by falling timber in the abdomen, causing severe internal injuries. He was rushed to the hospital.

I have his obituary and I copied the article in the Coal Company Magazine. I can mail it to you, if you could get a hold of me.
Re: Edward J. Morris 1852 - 1902

This would be his mother
Trailblazer -
Wyoming's first female judge, Esther Hobart Morris was ahead of her time

By RENA DELBRIDGE

At the time of her appointment as the nation’s first female Justice of the Peace, Esther Hobart Morris was 59 years old and determined to succeed as a professional, as a mother and as a wife.

Wyoming can claim many "firsts" for women, from the right to vote to the first female governor. And it all began with Esther Hobart Morris.
In what must have been a moment of great irony, Morris was appointed the nation’s first female justice of the peace in 1870 to fill the term of James W. Stillman, who resigned in protest after the Wyoming Territory passed an equality bill in December 1869.

Despite little formal education, Morris handled her South Pass City courtroom competently, proving that a woman could hold office and maintain her familial duties. Standing six feet tall, she ruled on 26 cases, not one of which was reversed on appeal.

"Her primary significance is as an extraordinary symbol of women’s rights," Dr. Phil Roberts, associate history professor at University of Wyoming, said. "Here was a generally uneducated woman that ably demonstrated she could carry out this important civic duty. It doesn’t seem very revolutionary now, but in the times, it was. She’s symbolically very powerful."

Rising to challenges born of necessity, her ability to transcend the stereotyped roles of women and serve as a model is a constant thread in her life.

Orphaned as a young girl, Morris was a successful businesswoman by her early 20s. Answering a calling to equality, she spoke out against slavery while standing up for women’s right to organize.

Widowed in 1845, she moved to Illinois to settle her late husband’s affairs, where she experienced the difficulties women encountered in property and legal matters. She married John Morris and in 1869 they moved west to South Pass City, opening a saloon to serve the booming gold town.

At the time, the burgeoning suffrage movement in the East was stalled as many men insisted that women would be unable to properly fulfill their societal domestic roles if granted equal rights. In contrast, frontier women in Wyoming were pulling their weight, working side-by-side their men.

In November 1869, William H. Bright, also of South Pass, introduced the suffrage measure to the territorial legislature. Signed into law by Gov. John A. Campbell in December, 1869, the bill made Wyoming famous as the Equality State.

Although credited in some accounts as the driving force behind the bill, Morris was likely simply a supporter, according to Roberts. Morris and Bright didn’t meet until after the historic legislation passed.

The new law paved the way for Morris’ February 14, 1870 appointment to Justice of the Peace. Although controversial in South Pass, historical documents record a steady stream of civil and criminal matters into her courtroom during an eight and one-half-month tenure.

As one of the first women put to the test, Morris "acquitted herself admirably," despite limited education and experience, Roberts said. "Had she failed as a judge, when do you think the next woman would have been appointed? How would the whole suffrage argument gone?"

Morris’ success proved wrong the naysayers who stubbornly insisted a woman could not manage equality without compromising her duties as a wife and mother.

Within a year of her judicial term, women sat on a Wyoming jury for the first time. Wyoming’s pioneering gains prompted noted activist Susan B. Anthony to call for Eastern women to migrate en mass to the Cowboy State.

Although typified as a suffrage leader, Morris preferred to let her actions on the bench speak for her, in pure Wyoming fashion, advocating in practice equal rights.

"She spent the rest of her life as a role model," Roberts said. "She was, in essence, saying, ‘Any woman could do this, as I’ve demonstrated’."

Morris was honored as a suffrage pioneer at Wyoming’s statehood celebration in 1890, and, at age 80, was a delegate to the national suffrage convention. In 1960, her contributions to the equal standing of women were immortalized by a bronze statue in Washington, D.C.

Perhaps less visible, but of even greater lasting value, was the example she set.

Timeline.

Aug. 8, 1814 Esther Hobart Morris born to Daniel and Charlotte Hobart in Tioga County, New York

1833 Attended a church meeting in New York where she spoke out for abolition and the right of women to gather

June 1869 Moved from Illinois to South Pass City, Wyoming with husband John Morris and family

Dec. 10, 1869 Council Bill 70, granting women the vote and other equal rights, signed into law by territorial Gov. John A. Campbell

Feb. 14, 1870 Appointed Justice of the Peace for South Pass City

Sept. 6, 1870 Was among eight women in South Pass City to exercise the newly granted right to vote

Dec. 6, 1870 Completed her term in office; does not seek re-election

Feb. 1872 Attended the American Woman Suffrage Association Convention in San Francisco

July 1876 Attended the National Suffrage Convention in Philadelphia

July 24, 1890 Was an honored guest at a banquet declaring Wyoming’s statehood

1895 Attended the National Republican Convention in Ohio as a Wyoming delegate

April 2, 1902 Died at age 87 in Cheyenne, Wyoming

PHOTO CREDIT: Courtesy Wyoming State Archives

Home :: News :: Sports :: Weather :: Classifieds :: Publications :: Subscribe :: Interactive :: Weekly Features

Source: 1949 Wyoming Annual Report of the State Inspector of Coal Mines, Pages 11 & 12

"FATAL ACCIDENT INVOLVING HOWARD AGER"
On March 7, 1949, Howard Ager, age 21, single was instantly killed when hit by a loaded trip. The accident occurred in the 6 South Entry of the Reliance No.11 Coal Mine, property of the Union Pacific Coal Company.

William Kirchbaum, machine man, Virgil Kirby, loading end man, and Mr. Ager, ratchet man, were the crew engaged in driving an air course barrier from 6 South to 7 South. The crew had shot this place through to 6 South Entry and were in the act of cleaning up the coal.

The motorman in 6 South Entry had pulled one trip out and stopped on his way out; when he came back with the empty trip the place was practically cleaned up. When he came out with the second trip no one flagged him to stop. As he didn’t see anyone he thought the track was clear and kept pushing his trip towards the parting. It struck Mr. Ager and killed him instantly.

Mr. Spence, mine superintendent, had just gone through this place down to 7 South. He shut the shaker down and told the men to keep it shut until they had the coal loaded off the track in the 6 South Entry. If the shaker had been shut as instructed, it would have been possible to hear the trip coming out of 6 South and probably this accident would have been prevented.

A ratchet man is a worker who operates the duckbill loader when mining with duckbill conveyors.

A duckbill loader is a machine for loading coal, ore, or rock usually in headings or tunnels. It consists of a wide flat shovel that is forced into the loose material along the floor by the forward motion of the conveyor. The shaking motion of the conveyor brings the material backwards, and it is loaded into cars or a conveyor. It works at its maximum efficiency to the rise or in flat tunnels.

Source: 1968 Wyoming Annual Report of the State Inspector of Mines, page 79,

nonfatal accident, noncoal mine, 1968Aug20, John Ager, cart axle bent workman's big toe on right foot backward; fractured big toe on right foot; American Colloid Co., Upton Plant, Upton, WY

This is all the information that I have on these accidents.

from Jerry

You can download the index at the GenWeb site:
http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wysweet2/research/
If you had a photo taken there, they recorded a name, date, and what the photo was. For example, one of Raymond's entries reads "12/1/1929, Dupont, Raymond, three children". They may or may not have the actual negative to make a print from, some have been lost over the years. You can call them and find out if a negative still exists to have a print made. Even if they don't have it, it's still pretty valuable, for example Joy Dupont, she had her senior Reliance high school picture taken in Oct 1951. That tells you that she was still living and unmarried, an approximate age and that she was in Reliance at the time.

To find out what they were doing for a living, this is of course recorded on the censuses, but this only gets you to 1940. This information though was also typically recorded in Polk directories. The Rock Springs library has a fairly good collection of them in the 30's-50's they have 1934, 1939, 1944, 1950, 1953-56, 1958. Call the Reference Librarian at 307-352-6668 to ask her to do lookups for the names you want. The city museum has a separate collection of them, I don't have a list of the years they have, 307-362-3138. The library is only open until 5 today (Friday), noon to 5 tomorrow, closed on Sun. The museum is open Mon-Sat 10-5. The museum has other stuff, I don't know what all, they don't want to share a holding list with me. I do know that they have some hit or miss high school yearbooks there.

Gray burials, look at findagrave.com for as complete a listing as your going to find. This contains the city index and then some. I photographed every stone that was still standing and readable in the spring of 2010, so it is fairly comprehensive.

Orville being married previously...I actually looked for him in the marriage index by just his first name, the only marriage that came up was the one to Glenna, so he was likely widowed or divorced by the time he came here. It'll probably be a tough nut to crack unless you have some clue as to what state/county he married the first wife in. You can get a copy of the Sweetwater county marriage license BTW, from the County Clerk in Green River if you want it, last I knew they were only charging $1 for it, 307-872-6406.
---
Angela M.
Thank you so much for that info. Confirming Glenna Mae name before marriage to orville, is one thing i was looking for.

The duponts were dawson new mexico, a well known mining town, and they head up to green river and reliance rock springs i assume for mining reasons. So i was looking for any info on why or what they were doing in wyoming.

Orville Gray family is from oklahoma, and he worked for the coal trains, so i am trying to figure out about what year he headed to wyoming. Ill try and look for some of that Gray info of whose buried, because we know orville was married before, but we dont know to whom.

Most of the Duponts were taken back to new mexico for burial.

I have the obits for all of them, but not much info except lineage, which i already know.

Can i ask what the "new studio holding imdex" is?

Thank you again.

In the marriage index I find:
Orville Lee Gray to Glenna Mae Travis, 1942-1946 Book M, Page 497

Raymond L Dupont to Agnes Twitchell, 1947-1949, Book O, Page 266

Henry S Dupont to Louise Jenkins, 1930-36, Book J, Page 3986

Edgar S Dupont to Mrs. Helen Boland, 1942-1946, Book M, Page 495

In the New Studio index to photographic holdings, four photos listed for Raymond Dupont, one by a GM Dupont, and two by Joy Dupont. One each for a CC Littrell, Ethel Littrell and Norman Littrell. Gray, there is FW, Mrs. FW, Ester, Florence, Esther, Walter and Shelton & Gray.

There are several Grays buried in the Rock Springs Cemetery. Only one Dupont, a Daniel Scott.

It would help if you were more specific about what it is that you're looking for.
---
Angela M.
Hi
I'm Janez Gartner from Škofja Loka, Slovenia (ex Yogoslavia), Europe. Today I saw your massage you had written in January 2002.
My grandmother Anica Tavčar (married Gartnar) had a brother Franc Tavčar, borned on 8. oktober 1886 in Sveti Lenart near Škofja Loka. His father was Martin Tavčar, mother Marija Kržišnik. In december 1906 he come in Rock Springs (Wyoming). At the start he worked in mine. His last known job (at least as I know) was salesman.
In USA his name was Frank Tavčar or Taucher. He dayed on 11. oktober 1945 in Hines Veterans Hospital,Chicago. He was some kind a writter, acter and he was active in workers political movement. If we talking about the same person, then a can help you about further information of family relatives. I made a family roots tree about Tavčar family here in Slovenija.

About the "Deutscher/Tavcar" linguistic connection I have another possible interpretation. Here in Slovenia is village in the hills surrounding Selška dolina (near Škofja Loka), called Davča. The surename Tavčar maybe meens a man, who comes from Davča (Davčar/Tavčar).

With best regardes
Janez Gartner
I believe the person you talked to might have been speaking of the older section. I took some pictures and would be glad to send them to you via email.
Theresa

Huh, that's weird, you'd think they'd have a better idea with a death that recent. You might try calling the Superior town hall, there's two numbers listed, I don't know why, I can't imagine that they'd have more than one line ringing at a time, they are 307-362-8173 and 307-362-4670. And she's right, Superior is microscopically small now, if whomever answers the phone at the town hall has been around awhile, they might be able to give you info right off the top of their head. I'm not seeing a listing for Rev. Jim Copland or a Superior Baptist Church, might ask about that too, maybe the Rev is still around or if not whomever takes care of the church paperwork. I knew the cemetery was there, I had no idea there was still a church though.
---

Angela M. Cable

I found an Obit he wrote for his brother that says the brother was sent to Cheyenne for burial. so I dont know if he was sent also. I do know he was the first mayor of green river. He and his brother built houses side by side that are still standing. He built the Morris Mercantile in Green River and it sold after his death. The man that bought it signed papers and the next day it burnt down. They rebuilt it and it is still standing and has been passed down. I read that his mother was the 'mother' of the women's sovereignty' but I can't find more to back it up. If it's so then it's safe to say your family is the reason I can vote. So thank you. :)

The Superior cemetery's name is Mountainview. There is also a Mountainview section of the Rock Springs Cemetery. I don't see him listed in the Rock Springs or Rest Haven cemeteries. You might try calling Vase's Funeral Home, 307-362-5770, it'll probably be Monday before there's office staff there to do any checking. There is one other funeral home here, but if he were a longtime resident, the family probably used Vase's. Vase's is also the office of the county coroner, so they ought to have a record of his death in any case.
---

Angela M. Cable

Hi Angela,
I dont know if you realize how important this is to me. I am 70 years old and for the first time, I got to see a photo of my real father Nickolas, who was quite the war hero in WWII and the Korean War, whose father was Dan. I know that my grandfather Dan arrived from Greece in 1906 and married a woman named Annie from Salt Lake City. Then they moved to Green River and Dan bought a pool hall that I guess Butch Cassidy and the Kid frequent once in a while and the wild bunch in the day. I have no photos of Dan. He died in 1949 and was buried in Salt Lake City. I imagine that all those Arkadis's are related because they all arrived on the boat about the same time from Greece. I want to thank-you so much for all the info and maybe I can die a happy person once and for all.
Very truly yours,
Gerald Nickolas Smith (Arkadis)

Hi Jerry,
Don't know if you're still following this thread. I just today got a copy of New Studio's index to their photographic holdings. Dan Arkadis is listed in there on negative 6016, the photo was taken 4 Feb 1927 and is listed as "boy, full figure". There is also a Tom Arkadis, negative 10016, taken 20 Nov 1932, "man bust". And Steve Arkadios, negative 193, 29 Jan 1920, "man in full figure". You can download the spreadsheet here:
http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wysweet2/research/
Sixth link down on the page and maybe see if there are any other weird spellings. You can contact New Studio at (307) 362-3943. I don't know if they will email digital files, the smallest print I know of that they do is 8x10 and those are $10.
---
Angela M.
