Sam Smith, my great-granduncle, was born in Putnam County, IN in 1840, the eldest son of Polly Ann Martin and Thomas W. Smith. He moved with his parents to Coles County, IL in 1849, and then to Urbana Township, Monroe County,, IA in 1853. Polly Ann died on June 12, 1859. After his mother's death, Sam went out west. He collected rock specimens in Wyoming. I have some of them in my curio cabinet. Mother said he sent others to Yale University. She said he was murdered at Carter's Station, WY around 1880 by Frank James (not the brother of the notorious Jesse, but a cousin.)

In his book YEARS OF PROMISE Carl Lockmon wrote: "With the rush to California and the Mormon immigration to Utah and the opening of the Oregon Trail, Uncle Sam decided to come out on the plains. At Fort Laramie he acted as scout, guide and hunter. The Indians called him the "Antelope stalker." He also collected fossils for Yale University and the Smithsonian Institute. He went with Jim Bridger into southwestern Wyoming to establish a trading post and stage station on the Overland Trail. After working at the station for some time, he established a ranch on a fork of Big Muddy Creek. Some maps show this fork as Smith's Fork. Some of Bridger's folks put in a store on Burnt Fork. It was while looking after this store while the proprietor and his wife were East on a visit that Uncle Sam was waylaid. His brother, William Smith, went out there when they got the news but was unable to learn much or recover much in the way of property."

In addition to William mentioned above Sam had several other siblings, including Sarah Frances "Frankie" Smith, who was my great-grandmother and the grandmother of Carl Lockmon.

I have no information about his being in Texas or New Mexico, although it is certainly possible.

Charles Faber

That is presuming we are talking about the same Sam Smith who fought at the 2nd Battle of Adobe Walls in Texas and was in Lincoln County New Mexico in 1878 at the Five Day Siege at the home of Alexander McSwee n with Billy the Kid.
Re: John FORBES

In the 1880 census, a John FORBES, 24, b. in Ireland, single, is found at Fort Sanders, Albany Co., Wyoming, as a boarder in the home of a couple whose surname I can't decipher. He is not a musician, but a teamster for the government, i.e., drives a horse-drawn wagon or allied work, but most-likely just a federal employee, not in the Army itself as he would have been listed by rank if so. Being Irish, he possibly could have played some sort of musical instrument as a pastime, as those in like situations did.

Fort Sanders was an Army post established to protect the workers building the first transcontinental railroad, the Union Pacific. The fort site was about three miles south of present-day Laramie, in eastern Wyoming. As the railroad was completed in 1869, the fort was closed/sold-off/abandoned in 1882 when it was no longer needed to protect the trains from Native American forays. Contact the Albany County Library in Laramie, which has a decent genealogical collection and is the home of the local genealogical society last I knew -- it may be able to help.

Therefore, if this is the right John Forbes (and I think it probably is), he obviously headed west from the fort as it was closing down or before, stopping for a time in Uinta County for farm work. Where he was in 1870 I can't determine (not in Uinta(h) County), but someone with an Ancestry subscription may be able to find him, as he would only be about 14 years old and possibly with parents/relatives somewhere east of eastern Wyoming, not west, or maybe not even in the US yet. (There are around 15 John Forbeses in the Castle Garden, New York, database which could include him, for instance.) The nearly complete destruction of the 1890 census doesn't help in tracing him farther. He would have been ca. 44 in 1900.

Sally

P.S. Gingell is a name in Uinta history as well -- I have some distant connection to it.

This site probably is not in Uinta County today. The Ham River (sometimes this is spelled Hamm or Hamms) mostly is in today's Lincoln County to the north (formerly a part of the original Uinta County). It comes from the Bridger-Teton National Forest, through Kemmerer in Lincoln County (there is a Hams Fork Reservoir near there) and continues into Sweetwater County with the Muddy /Little Muddy/Blacks streams in Uinta converging, and then joining the Ham near Granger to eventually flow into the Green River. If you have a Rand-McNally road atlas all this is shown.

Given that you are looking for it for a 3rd great-grandfather, the time was probably in the mid-1800s and certainly before 1900? The UPRR trackage did not come through this area until 1868 or so (that was what promulgated towns), though wagon trails did, and this was an area of little or no "white" population, so Fort Bridger might have been the only non-Native American inhabited spot. The Hamms Fork reference, I'd guess, would have been where the Ham and the combined two Muddys/Blacks streams met -- back then in the middle of nowhere near present-day Granger. It could well have been on the Mormon Trail, which passed south of today's Evanston, Uinta County.

Check out http://geonames.usgs.gov/domestic/index.html for this and similar geographical information.

Hope this helps, Sally

There is/was someone on this list who also is/was researching the Morrrow family -- suggest you go into the archives, if possible.

My connection is peripheral -- Alice Murtha (the daughter of my great-grandfather's half brother) married Fred Coles in June 1904 and died in a drowning accident a month later in July. Coles in 1911 married Elizabeth Morrow, who was born in Scotland.

The Morrow family came to Almy/Evanston in 1887. The father, probably a coal miner as many Scots who came to the area that early were, doesn't appear in the 1900 census in a family headed by Elizabeth (Dollar) Morrow, the mother of the above Elizabeth. The mother, however, is indicated as married, not widowed, so he may have been working elsewhere, though there was a large mine disaster in Almy in 1895. His name may have been Mathew/Matthew.

Some Morrows later are found in Lincoln County to the north, which was split from Uinta County in 1913.

Hope this is helpful, Sally

One reason I might not find them on the Pioneer manifests is they could have left England and went to Australia or New Zealand for some reason and from there across the Pacific and into California, then up into to Utah/Wyoming. I just have to figure out away to prove that.

The line that the Eyre's feed into did convert and moved from England. I also have a line that feed into me from my Mothers mother that did the same thing, Bentleys. They came over in two sets. The first set sometime in the 1860s/70s and the last in 1879. Two brothers were working on the Salt Lake Temple when the last set arrived.

Most of the other lines that feed into me came over from England in the 1620s/30s and help form the early history of the church. Martin Harris is my 3rd Great-Grand Uncle as ancestral quest put it. My dad’s mother was a Harris/Warner. The Eyre's line feed into my dads dads line. My mother’s mother was a Bentley/West. The West’s came over in the 1600 and started off in Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina and then to Tennessee. When the Mormons went thru Tennessee they joined the church and were living in Nauvoo when Joseph Smith was killed and voted for Brigham Young. Several of the West’s served as some, if not the first, missionary to Hawaii and settled/founded several towns in southern Utah and northern Arizona at the direction of the church. My 6th Great-Grand Uncle is Benjamin West – he was the personal painter to King George III, King of England during the revaluation.

My mother's father's parents came over in 1894 from northern Italy - the name is Baudino.

Let me know if you need more information on Joseph BANKS and his line. I have information going back to England in the 1650s

Thanks for the information. I was looking in my database and did not see either Lynda or James. So if they are some of my relatives, and I am almost sure they are, they would be cousins in a line from one of the brothers to the line that works down to me.

From the James that was b: 29 Jul 1795 in Quarrington, Lincolnshire, England my line goes from him to his daughter, Charlotte b: 27 Jul 1829 Dowsby, Lincolnshire, England. Charlotte married my 2nd Great-Grandfather, Joseph Banks b: 3 Jul 1821 Dowsby, Lincolnshire, M: 26 Aug 1846 Dowsby, Lincolnshire. Their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth b: 28 Sep 1859 Parowan, Iron, Utah married my Great-Grandfather Charles Louis Craw b: 24 Jul 1864 San Bernardino, San Bernardino, California, M: 17 Oct 1890 Pioche, Lincoln, Nevada.

The thing about Charlotte Eyre and her husband Joseph banks is nether one of them show up on any of the Mormon Pioneer Company's that made the trip between 1847 and 1868. Her dad and two brother do so up. The company is not identified, but it made the trip in 1865. The two brothers were Benjamin (24) and Edwin (20).

Dan

Sally,

Thanks for this information it help me a lot. I looked up Hams Fork Reservoir at Google Earth as well as at google and found it.

You are correct about the time frame. James Eyer was b: 29 Jul 1795 Quarrington, Lincolnshire, England and died and buried in "Hamm's Fork" 17 Sep 1865. It looks like he was part of a large group of people that converted to the LDS chruch, his babtismal dated is 16 Mar 1847. He show up on an list of an unidentified Mormon Pioneer Company that made the trip in 1865 with two of his sons, Benjamin (24) and Edwin (20). http://www.lds.org/churchhistory/library/pioneercompanysearc...

thanks again

Dan
Barker from North Cumberland, Unita County died in a fire 1910-1915, Need Obit Look-up

I am trying to find a man with the last name Barker. He was married to Elizabeth Izette Armstrong sometime around 1907, in North Cumberland. She came from Scotland in 1902. The family story is that he was Indian and died in a fire. They had 3 kids, Elizabeth 1907, George 1910, and Andrew, 1911.In the 1910 census she was living with her parents but still listed as married. In the 1920 census she has remarried to Thomas Bates, and he adopted her kids from the previous marriage.

So if anybody has access to Obit's from the Cumberland area to do a look-up for a Barker, 1910-1915, he was probably in his 20's, and he was born in Iowa. I believe he came there for the Coal mining.

Thanks.

I have checked in a book of cemetery records for Uinta County and some surrounding areas, but the only Foster buried here is Charles H Foster born 1882 died 1960. The Uinta County Herald was a weekly newspaper then and I have looked thru the microfilm for the month of October but cound not find an obituary for any Foster. He may have died here and was buried somewhere else. The death records for Evanston are kept in Cheyenne Wy. You may try the public records there. If you come up with any more information I can check it out for you. Sorry I couldnt be of more help. Charlene
Immigrated in 1863.
In 1910 listed as 63, with a Joe Kinney 27. in Cokeville.
Had a daughter Mary, in 1900 listed in Salt Lake City as 17. She married James Alfred Dougherty and apparently went to Portland, Oregon.
Found a Dorothy Kinney Whitley b. 1881 in Wy who died in 1954 in Ca. List mother as a Crookston. Could this be a sister to Joe, and Mary?
Tim was a sheep man and apparently was well-known but I cannot find anything about him. The original family members were: George, Ted, William, Abigael, John, Frank and Charles. Their parents were: John and Rebecca. I've found some info. on Frank and Charles, but not the others, so if you have any Lannons in your genealogy that settled in WY around that time please let me know.

Hello Jen,
Andrew' was a veteran due to there being a "American Legion" plaque at his gravesite. From his age he may have been in WWI but would have been quite old for a soldier at 50 something. I would guess he served in the Spanish American war and see if there are files for him, any veteran records. Also check the census, should say where his parents came from or if he came from Sweden by himself. DAHLQUIST are very popular out in Bridger Vally. I believe I have a 1st cousin married in the family.
Good Luck, Don

There is a James E Eyre buried in the Lyman Cemetery. His wife was Lydia Ann R. (ROBERTS) Eyre.
If I rrecall the history of Uinta County, James Eyre was a longtime serving as Sheriff of the county. Are these your relatives also?
Several folks were buried in unmarked cemeteries all around the County. I have relatives in two such cemeteries. A local person may be the only contact that may know the exact location your grandfathers final resting place.
Good Luck !!

Dan,
Do not be upset if you cannot find the listing of relatives on the Pioneer manifests. My gggrandmother was not listed either but made the trip. I understand that alot of young children were not listed by the wagon master or Captain as the Mormons refered to them. My gggrandfather was on four of these trains as a scout and mail carrier. He made the trip across the plains 53 recorded times.
From your description of the lineage, it sounds like your family was converted to Mormonism in England then made the trip to America and on too SLC. From there perhaps they went to WY, to homestead as alot of them did.
The ERYE name is very popular in Bridger Valley. I have several listings of ERYE's both in Lyman , which was were the MOrmon's were sent to settle out of SLC and in the Ft Bridger cemetery. The Lyman cemetery wasd mostly a Mormon cemetery where as Ft Bridger was more any denomination.
As i Mentioned before, there are alot of family cemeteries located all around the county also. There is also a small cemetery at burnt fork which is south of Ft Bridger by were the Mormons built Fort Supply.
I looked on a hunch for any HAMM's in the area to see if the river fork was named for them and there are none listed in any of the locale cemeteries in the county. So perhaps your James Erye was buried in a family cemetery somewhere out in the area of the Hamm's fork.
I will inquire to a associate of mine who knows the locations of most of the cemeteries within Uinta County at least around the Ft Bridger, Mountain View, Lyman areas.
If you would like information on the other ERYE famly's let me know.
One side note is youe Joseph BANKS may be the brother/ cousin to one of my BANKS relatives. I will have to research it and find out.
Hope this helps, Don

"Evanston News" newspaper -- Historical Newspaper

I have several diaries by my step greatgrandfather (Henry Weitzel) from when he was stationed at Fort Bridger. The diary for 1889 has entries refering to the "Evanston News". He mentioned writing articles for the newspaper.

I am curious as to the existence of the newspaper and if there are archives. Also, he refers to the "Register", another newspaper that he wrote articles that were published in it. Was there a newspaper in the area that was refered to as the "Register"?

I would appreciate any information about these newspapers and possably the existence of historical archives of them.

Thank you, Roger Fife

What kind of information are you looking for? I am a descendent of Mary Ann Burton whose father was Henry. Henry died in a mine explosion in either Uinta or Lincoln Counties.

Kevin Haddenham
Silverlake, Washington

BTW, I have seen you post on numerous lists, where do you call home?
