Hello

I hope someone can help me with a look up. Ralph Simpson was convicted at Stafford Assizes 6 Aug 1829 and sentenced to 14yrs. He sailed on 26 Dec 1829 to Australia New South Wales on the Nithsdale arriving May 1830. It would appear that a Ralph Simpson returned to the UK in 1830 I dont know if this is the same one having been granted a pardon or something similar. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Su

If you have any convicts transported in 1847,1848, or 1849 to Tas and Norfolk Island, or exiles to NSW, have a look at "Parliamentary Papers" published 1849 on Google Books http://books.google.com/books?id=gKsSAAAAYAAJ Just put your convict's name into "search in this book", or the name of the vessel for extras such as correspondence. There are also a lot of mentions of people just by their convict number, so try that too.

Jacob Whitfield

Jacob has vanished. He was of Irish origin arriving as a life sentence convict on the Isabella 2 on 9 March 1922. He left behind his wife Mary Gowrie and four children, Mary, Catherine, Judith and William. Jacob ws born May 1774 in Balyhagen Tyrone, Northern Ireland. His four children followed Jacob to Australia a few years later. Jacob received his Ticket of Leave in 1834 No. 34/270. Jacob married Jean Connell on 2/4/1832. Jean died 21/9/1832 in HMG Hospital. Jacob married Elizabeth Smith on 11/4/1840. Elizabeth died on 12/8/1851 in the Darlinghurst Gaol. The last known location of Jacob is in the 1841 Census. Whether he was alive when Elizabeth died is unknow. So after 1841, Jacob's whereabouts is a mystery. As he had a conditinal pardon on 1/7/1841, he could not have left Australia. No death of Jacob can be traced in any Australian death indexes. Being a convict and possibly dieing before 1856 (official BDM registration commencement)would his death have been recorded in a church record? Also being a convict would he be buried in consecreated burial grounds or elsewhere? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Bob Starling - Whitfield Family Historian.
James Seymour ticket of leave

Does anyone have any information on a James Seymour from the ship 'Lady Kennaway' that arrived in NSW, Australia in 1836? He was granted a ticket of leave (number 44/2759), but the ticket provides no information on his native place or trade. I am curious to know if he married and had children in Australia.

How do I find a Covicts Military Court Martial?

My ancestor Henry Rose was involved in the Upper Canada Rebellion (or not, as his crime implies!)
Henry was sent to Australia aboard the 'Maitland', departed Sheerness and arrived Australia July 1840
He was born in Huntingdonshire (UK?) and was a 'labourer and soldier'.
He was tried at an Upper Canada Court Martial on 14th Aug 1839 and was sentenced to life for Desertion.
This is the only information I have on Henry (apart from marriage, children and death). I have obtained this from the NSW Convict Indents.
From this information I think Henry was probably in the British Military.
Can anyone advise me where, how I might find further details, particularly of his trial. Was it the norm for a prisoner to be sent from Canada back to Britian and then onto Australia?
Any assistance greatly appreciated,
thanks, Alison

Bob Starling - Whitfield Family Historian.

trying to find out more about my convict family member THOMAS PAYNE?PAIN. Arrived in Sydney town via Norfolk Island and then onto Tasmania, 1842.Ticket of leave 1847, where he went to ADELAIDE and in 1950 Married an Irish Lass. The boat was JOHN BREWER FROM LONDON. I cannot find his parents names, he never named them on anything and have spent lots of dollars trying to research this, NO RESULTS. Was paying a researcher in England, still no parents names because too many PAYNES in that era. What to do next PLEASE Thankyou Sandra Pain

HELP!! Where to start...

According to my grandparents one of our relatives was brought to Australia as a convict for stealing some rope. Im not sure of his first name all I know is that he was a McNamara. The jokes ran for a good few hours at a family gathering (his crime was KNOT a good idea etc) I have only been able to go back so far on the McNamara surname as my gr gr grandfather was murdered in 1912. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated..
Thanks

I am a descendant of Joseph Flood via his son James Flood (1807-1886) and his wife Mary Foster. I am trying to figure out who James' mother is - it seems that there were several women who had Joseph's children - Ann Gorman, Ann Germain and Ann Jarmy (the last two are perhaps the same person??). I found James' death certificate on the NSW BDM site and his mother is listed as Nancy, though I'm aware that death certificates often have incorrect information on them.

I would be very appreciative of any clues.

Thanks.

First child Sarah Jane b. 28.6.1858 at Picton and Alice b.1860.

Mary Anne accompanied her mother, Mary on the convict transport Palambam, arrived Sydney 31.7.1831 aged 16 months. Her father was Edward, a butcher in Dublin.

She was admitted to the orphan school Parramatta on 30 October 1832 and released back into the care of her mother a few years later.

I believe her to be my 3xGGrandmother via BARRETT PELLOW and SMEDLEY.

Anybody else with the same connections?

Darryl
ABORIGINAL DNA FROM EAST ARNHEM AUSTRALIA

MY ABORIGINAL DNA FROM EAST ARNHEM AUSTRALIA:

WHAT I DID KNOW / WHAT I DIDN’T KNOW:
Through oral history and family artifacts, I had already known much of my MOORE Family history. My Moore ancestors departed Belfast Ireland and arrived in New York on March 1, 1850 aboard the Sir Henry Pottinger and now I have confirmed this through ancestry.com & rootsweb.com. But, that was not my original reason for joining. I originally became interested (and remain interested) in using these ancestry databases when I learned (much to my surprise) from WWW.DNATRIBES.COM that my mother and I both share VERY substantial (mtDNA) genetic markers from an Aboriginal, East Arnhem Australia woman.

FROM AUSTRALIA TO IRELAND:
In order to learn more about this mystery women, I have combined (what science tells us about the mtDNA trail) with (the tremendous amount of data that is available at wwww.rootsweb.com & ancestry.com . Through a long, careful, and painstaking process of elimination I have begun to see an interesting scenario about my great-great-great grandmother Margret (born 1810), who married the Irishman, William Moore (born 1810). Interestingly, I have not been able to turn up a single surname for Margret or anything about her true origins.
SCENARIO:
Did the Irishman William Moore (born 1810) spend part
of his young adult life in Australia. If so, why?
And did young William Moore bring back to Ireland
a Native East Arnhem Australia wife? If not, WHO DID?

Any clues that you could send to me about my East Arnhem Australia DNA would be greatly appreciated.

THEN, FROM IRELAND TO AMERICA:
Here is an historical and true testimony of the endurance that America has inherited from our amazingly resilient immigrant ancestors. Like so many others, my great-great-great grandparents, William & Margret Moore (both born 1810) held out as long as they possibly could during the terrible Irish famine, before finally risking everything in order to bring their eight children (plus one) to the shores of New York back in 1850. The small but sturdy sailing vessel, the Sir Henry Pottinger with her crew of 17, sailed slowly from Belfast to New York with 179 passengers, struggling to keep each other alive. A few babies were born on board during the long voyage, but it was during a terrible storm mid-way across the Atlantic Ocean, amid the sounds of loud Irish music, that a baby girl was born on her over-crowded deck, and the babe, a symbol of new life and hope, was given the name Margot Moore. She was the ninth child of my great-great-great grandparents, 40 year-old William and Margret Moore, whose eight other children were with them among the 179 passengers. (Margret, age 17 ~ Martha, age 15, ~ Robert, age 13 ~ Mathew, age 11 ~ Twins James & William John, ages 9 ~~ Thomas, age 4 ~ and Jane, age 1.) The Sir Henry Pottinger delivered my Moore clan to New York's Castle Garden on March 1st, 1850.

MY DIRECT LINEAGE:
William & Margret Moore (both born in 1810), are my great-great-great grandparents. One of their sons was my great-great grandfather, William John Moore (Twin to James), born 1841 in Ireland and died 1881 in the USA. One of his sons was my great grandfather, John William Moore, born March 30, 1865, New York and died 1954 in Los Angeles County, and is buried in Inglewood, California. One of his sons was my maternal grandfather, Roy Harvey Moore, born June 21, 1903, North Dakota and died in the arms of his beautiful second wife Maria Moore (living), with their 3 loving children (living) at his bedside in March 1984 Santa Ana, California. My Grandpa Roy Harvey Moore is also buried in Inglewood, California, near his parents.

Again, any clues that you could send to me about my East Arnhem Australia DNA would be greatly appreciated.

Spec mea Deus!
Sincerely,
Stu Hays,
stu.hays@gmail.com

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Sewell Joseph & WHITTLE Jean/Jane

I am trying to locate any families who are descendants of Joseph Sewell and Jean/Jane Whittle.

By referring to various documents such as the Indents of the Ship, Lady Harewood and Joseph Sewell’s Ticket of Leave, it is estimated that Joseph Sewell was born in around 1807 and that his native place of dwelling was Essex in England.

1832 - Tried, Chelmsford, England

On the 3rd of January 1832, aged twenty-five years, Joseph Sewell was tried in Chelmsford for the offence of stealing a turkey. His trade was shown as a Ploughman, Reaps, Sows and Milks. He was single and a Protestant and could read and write. Having a prior conviction of three months, this saw him receive the penalty of 14 years, to be served in the Colony of New South Wales.

His description was described as five feet six and three quarter inches, dark sallow complexion, brown hair with Hazel and small eyes. He had the distinguishing features of a thick nose and a Heart with two sails, J.S. Man, M.S. Anchor, 1832 on lower letter arm, blue ring on left middle finger and a scar on the back of left thumb.

1832 - Arrival in New South Wales

The 'Lady Harewood' left Portsmouth on the 15th of March 1832 and arrived in the Colony of New South Wales on the 5th of August, 1832. The General Return of Convicts in New South Wales of 1837 shows that Joseph was aged 30 years and assigned to a P.J. Fredericks.

1838 - Ticket of Leave

Records show that Joseph Sewell received a Ticket of Leave in 1838. The dog in the picture had supposedly saved Joseph’s life and was his constant companion; as told by Ivy Cook, a grand daughter of Richard & Jane Carpenter. Ivy was the person that had the original picture of Joseph & Jane, which was found in a shed at Tingha, NSW by Noel & Mary Carpenter.

1840 - Marriage in Newcastle

By 1840 and now aged 33 years, it appears Joseph Sewell was working in the Newcastle District as a ticket of leave holder when he married a young female convict by the name of Jean/Jane Whittle who was 18 years of age.

Jean/Jane had come from Glasgow in Scotland and had been a Child's Maid when she was tried in the Glasgow Court of Justiciary on the 10th of January 1839. Her offence was house breaking and because she had three prior convictions of 30 days, 60 days, and 60 days, she was sentenced to 10 years, to be served in the colony of New South Wales.

She was then 17 years of age, could read and write, single and a Protestant. She was five feet, two and one quarter inches, dark, ruddy and freckled with brown hair and eyes and a scar on the outer corner of her left eyebrow. She was transported on the ship ‘'Mary Anne’ which left Woolwhich on the 18th of July, 1939 and arrived in new South Wales on the 10th of November, 1939.

DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH AND JEAN/JANE [WHITTLE] SEWELL

2nd GENERATION

1. Westmeath was sentenced in Mullingar in 1837 to 7 years transportation & arrived in NSW Jan. 1, 1838 aboard the Neptune. On the Australian Convict Index his status is entered as M, 1m, 1f, which I assume means he was married and accompanied by his wife. Does anyone know how I might learn her name?

Patrick was issued Ticket of Leave #42/0748, TOL Passport #43/602, May 4, 1843 & Certificate of Freedom #CF44/1400, Sept. 20, 1844. I'm attempting to locate any descendants. Any information regarding Patrick would be welcome.

Thanks Pamela.
Find www.perthdps mainly feeds into other sites I am already very familiar with: convictcentral.com; frementle prison & paperspast.com (for N.Z.).
I have all that data and am wanting to move back to retrieve trial records at their source, Bodmin 18 March 1863.
But, hey it's great that you put me onto the WA site because it means message boards do work!
Regards Robina.

Convicts to VDL

This is a combined re-post of two separate posts from Nov-Dec. Just thought I'd make one convict list.

I am looking for any information on the following convicts:
SARAH SMITH per 'Maria 1' & 'Elizabeth Henrietta' 1818
THOMAS WEBB per 'Globe' & 'Elizabeth Henrietta' 1819
JOSEPH HOPKINS per 'Baring' & 'Emu' 1815
RICHARD MULLINS per 'Dromedary' 1820
WILLIAM HARDISTY per 'Countess of Harcourt' 1821
GEORGE TROWBRIDGE per 'Somersetshire' & 'Emu' 1814

Also DANIEL iRVINE or IRVING - no known details except that he was in Tasmania in the 1840's and died in Victoria in the 1860's

All these people were connected in one way or another - SMITH WAS MARRIED to both HOPKINS & WEBB and possibly had a relationship with TROWBRIDGE, SMITH & HARDISTY were cousins (un-proven) and both MULLINS & IRVINE-IRVING were married to SMITH & HOKPINS daughter Sarah Ann. All arrived in VDL via either one or two ships. I have a fair bit of info on them (except IRVINE-IRVING) in their initial years in Tasmania so, although any info would be welcome, I am more interested in pre transportation and what happened to them after they served their sentences.

Also wondering if anybody has come across an EDWARD SMITH who married JANE WEBB in Launceston in 1854, I suspect he was a convict also.

Cheers

Bob
Jessie/Janet Stewart

I'm trying to find out more about my Great Great grandparents ROBERT JOHNSON and JESSIE(JANET) STEWART.

They were both transportered to Tasmania as Convicts and married there and had 5 children including my Grandmother AMELIA JOHNSON in 1851.

This is what I have established thus far:

ROBERT JOHNSON(Caledonia 2) T.L married JESSIE STEWART convict (Hydery) on the 22nd February 1936.

They applied for or were granted permission to marry on 20 Jan 1836

ROBERT JOHNSON: convicted 23 march 1822 at Lancaster and departered from Portsmouth 19 June 1822 arrived VDL on 6 November 1822

There are no Jessie Stewarts recorded on the Hydery however there is a JANET STEWART and this is also the name given on the intension to marry record but not the marriage record. I believe that the names Janet and Jessie were often substututed for each other at the time.

JANET STEWART: The HYDERY set sail from Plymouth on eiter the 2nd or 11th April 1832 and arrived VDL on 10th August 1832.

Here is my main problem:

There are TWO JANET STEWARTS listed on the manifesto.

One was convicted in Perth the other in Glasgow and I have no idea which one she was as her marriage certificate gave no clue to her origin.

It appears that the other Janet Stewart also arrived safely in Tasmania and also married in 1836 but to a Richard Groves.

I would really like to know which Janet is mine so I know which one I should be clamming as my own, although I must say the coincedences with the Janets makes me interested in both of them and wonder if they may have developed a freindship of any type.

I would appreciate any help which could solve this puzzle as well as any information on any of the above mentioned people

Thankyou

Mabel

I am interested in finding out more of this ancestor, he received his CF in 1825 and was constable at Bathurst 1828 Census records.

I think he may be grandfather of Thomas Henry Marsh who was born at Bourke/Louth in outback NSW. Thomas Henry Marsh married Alice Fox. Her mother (Mary Ann Chapple) was my great aunt.

I think John Marsh' dates coul
