Ha! And I've found another spelling that has thrown me. Kaehne. Which is more phonetic I suppose. I should have seen that one coming. (My grandfather Anglicised it to Kainey between the wars.)
Now, I wrote a whole post about another name... and it has disappeared! I'll start again.
My book says the Lampe first-settler was "Baron Herman von Lampe". Google tells me that the 'von' part indicates 'nobility'... as would the title 'Baron' of course. Also... that the use of 'von' has largely been dropped or incorporated into the surname.
But then... he's a shoemaker and tavern licensee. How is a Baron a shoemaker? How meaningful are these title? Or are they meaningless?
