I am trying to tie up the last details on this branch of my family tree and it is proving very difficult, so hoping that someone out there, might have some information to get to the truth, or perhaps show that I have got this totally wrong!
I have a Holman Bates as a visitor in the UK 1901 Census, at 34 Great Fenchurch Street, Folkestone, Kent. residing with the May family, born Wellington aged 20. Among the May family is Lucy Abigail May, aged 18 daughter of Charles Hills May, who was my great aunt.
I have a marriage record July 1901 showing Holman Bates and Lucy Abigail May marrying in Fulham, London.
Three daughters are born - all registered in Folkestone, Kent.
Lucy Louise Bates - April 1902
Clarice Hilda Bates - Jan 1903
Jessie Lillian Agnes Bates - July 1904
On the 1911 Census, completed in Lucy's handwriting it shows her as a Widow, living at 259 High Street, Cheriton, Folkestone with her three daughters but she has written next to their names "British subjects by parentage children's fathers home New Zealand"
I cannot find any death records for Holman Bates during the period 1903 to 1911.
My searches however found a marriage record for a Holman Bates in 1906 in Brisbane to Clarice Isabelle Hansford. The certificate shows his rank as Sailor and that he was a bachelor aged 25 birthplace Wellington New Zealand.
The certificate gives his fathers name as Holman Bates (Engineer) originally from Totnes, Devon and his mother Amelia Chelmsford.
I found a copy birth certificate showing Holman Bates being born on 2nd October 1880 in Wellington, New Zealand and named as John Holman Bates with his father also named John Holman Bates, but his mothers name as Annie Swift from Bristol!
I am positive that this is the same man who married my great aunt Lucy but left her and his three daughters behind in the UK, with them thinking he had died, and therefore making his marriage to Clarice Isabelle Hansford possibly bigamous.
If anyone could shed some light on any of these details, I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance.
