Hi Terese
These people must be related but they are in South Australia which was included in droving routes for Victoria and NSW.
"ID: I216377
Name: John MACDONALD
Given Name: John
Sex: M
Birth: 21 Jun 1856 in Baldina, South Australia
Death: Y
Note: Birth record - Father : Alexander MACDONALD. Mother: Catharine MACMILLAN. Source: South Australian Births 1842 - 1906 Book: 8 Page: 273 District: Bur."
This may be a previous generation or a previous birth to his parents who died young. The tradition was to name the next son born the same name.
See: South Australian People at
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SHOW&...

Cheers
Kay [South Australia]

There are some similar surnames listed under "South Australian People", here:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SHOW&...

Some may be a branch from the Matuschka family but spelled as "Matuska", "Matuschke" etc.
There is an amazing mix of German, Polish, Austrian, Hungarian, Czech & Croatian families in South Australia. There are also people who have changed their names from "foreign" sounding names to very ordinary common names, such as "Ephraitt" to "Clark"! There was a lot of this around the World Wars for obvious reasons because the "foreign" names attracted detention in camps for the duration of the war, just as with the Japanese in Canada. Bad times.
Hope you have found some good clues!
Kay [South Australia]

I currently doing some research on my family tree and concentrating on the Chaffers-Welsh side. Jeremiah was my 2nd Great Grandfather and I'm just curious as to why he changed his last name from Welsh to Chaffers-Welsh. I understand his mothers maiden name was Chaffers and his Fathers last name is Welsh. But I am just wondering why he changed his last name. Thankyou for reading

All records in town were destroyed by fire prev to 1880. Trying to get from NYS. Thanks for the idea. I will try to find census.

There isn't a marriage on the online database for him in 1925.

Is it this one?
2730/1926 MCDONALD JOHN L / PRIEST ALICE / DUBBO

I think he may be telling porkies on his marriage certificate. No birth found for him nor marriage for his parents in Victoria. It is possible he had changed his name.

Is this his wife's death?
28168/1944 MCDONALD ALICE / HARRY WILLIAM / MARY / WARREN

Matches this birth:
27285/1900 PRIEST ALICE / HENRY W / MARY / WARREN

NB Father is shown on his death as John Alexander, not Alexandra. There is a John Alexander and Catherine McDONALD (nee PATTERSON, no middle name) in Victoria around the right period but no child named Robert or John. They were in Nhill so wrong area anyway. They married in 1897 so I considered maybe she had a son prior to marrying John A but can't find it registered.

You don't say how old he was. Do you have a marriage certificate? Death certs can be unreliable as someone else was giving the information. Is 'Grace' his mother's maiden surname or her middle name?

It is always a good idea to type SURNAMES only in upper case and the rest in lower case so that we can tell the difference.

His death reg. has his name as 'Robert' John Leo.

Debra

Hi!
William Druary Dowers was born in London his father James Theophilus Dowers, and Mary Caroline Druary. (a web site say birth 6/5/1838)
He died 1921 Collingwood
Catherine Kerr was born in Glasgow, her parents Peter Kerr and Margaret Hamilton. Catherine died 1881 aged 30 at Sandridge Victoria
They married 1868 in Victoria
Their children: Margaret 1868, Caroline 1870-1871, James 1871, Peter Charles 1874-1875, William Hamilton 1880-1881.
You have William Hamilton birth as 1860 but on official site it is 1880. Catherine would have been born abt 1851 so
she would not have a child at age 9.
Hope this makes sense and helps

As warncoort1 said their marriage cert would give you info
Even the Pioneers CD ( BDMS of VIC to 1888) does . Says Catherine b Glasgow and William b London
Are a couple of Catherine KERRs in the VIC Pro passenger arrivals who came here as children in early 1850s . Again this marriage cert would help sort out if one of these fit . Costs $20 and can be downloaded

Bye

MargM

Hi, thanks for replying.
I think he boarded the ship oronsay bound for freemantle on the 7/2/1925 (not 100% sure it is him, but from the residence he lived in before departure which is documented on the passenger list, it is likely to be him).

Thanks

Looks like he played soccer there (see NLA Trove)? It appears he did not marry.

Dear Rhonda,

Yes I tend to agree with you that there may have been a grain of truth in the story however mostly been mixed up over the years as it was passed down.

I did manage to Google the Christ Church Cathedral Baptisms records for page 26 and to my luck and amazement somebody had scanned in the record book which I found here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/uon/2448468396/in/set-721576050...

This confirms that a William Clement Bartlett was born on 20 May 1835 and baptized on 3 July 1836. Mother and Father listed as Clement and Mary Bartlett of Newcastle, NSW. Fathers occupation as sawyer.

The Free Settler or Felon site also has a listing for Clement Bartlett who breached a contract he was working on to cut Cedar.

Thanks again Rhonda. Without your guidance I doubt that I would have found any of this information out about Clement Bartlett etc.

My mother is visiting me today so I will show her all the research on Clement and see what she thinks about it all.

I'm really excited and determined to bridge the gap in our family!

Linda

I just yesterday sent you an email to your aol address (let me know is you received it) and today found this thread on the very subject. I have the same info as you re Henry Emmett and Mary Cupitt. I'm still confused about the Emmett and Broughton characters - the same or different. It seems unlikely that there were 2 Mary Cupitts though.

Peter

Hi Linda

I do hope you will locate the baptism records for Christ Church Cathedral, Newcastle,(Baptisms p.26) to see if there was a birth date recorded for William Clement BARTLETT.

Regarding family stories, there is often a 'grain of truth' in such tales though the re-telling of the event becomes somewhat distorted. But I wonder, in the early days (1840-1850) around Newcastle or West Maitland was the population small enough for everyone to know everybody? In which case, one BARTLETT family would hear something about another BARTLETT family?

"The First Bartletts - as narrated by Ted Bartlett (Edward Claude Bartlett, son of Claude Austin Kingsmill Bartlett)"
I found a family tree and this was Ted's link to the first BARTLETT in his family.
Edward BARTLETT b: 5 FEB 1845 d: 6 OCT 1916
SON: Edward BARTLETT b: 30 APR 1864 d: 25 APR 1923
GRANDSON: Claude Austin Kingmill BARTLETT b: 24 JUL 1891 d: 27 APR 1955
GREAT GRANDSON ‘Ted”: Edward Claude BARTLETT b: 22 SEP 1918 d: 1 SEP 1992

Rhonda

Dear Rhonda, Debra and Mollipops,

Thank you so much for you input into this, it is extremely helpful.. especially your find about Clement Benjamin Bartlett which I am following up on now.

So far I have the following facts about William Bartlett thanks to my mother for her research:

Birth: 16 Mar 1836(obituary states 1837), Newcastle, Maitland district, NSW;

Marriage: 10 Jun 1865 to Georgina Grandesson, at Church of England in Inverell and registered in Wellingrove, NSW(1865/3407). Have copy of marriage certificate but parents names not listed. Marriage was witnessed by two people with the surname "Martini";

1866-1867: Worked as a shearer at Byron Station;

3 Mar 1880: Member of the Public School Board, Little Plain;

4 Apr 1900: Dingo hunting accident. Story found in the Inverell Times - Wed April 4th 1900;

Death: 16 Mar 1911 - aged 74, Little Plain, Inverell, NSW. Have copy of the death certificate. Parents named as Benjamin and Elizabeth. Mothers maiden name is stated as "not known". Informant is William's eldest son named William Harold Bartlett. Death due to Emphysema of the lungs. (1911/1857);

Information found about William's parents:

Obituary states that William lost his parents while an infant and was raised by a Mr Owen Evans of Maitland.

Possibility of Clement Benjamin Bartlett and Mary Elizabeth Jones being the parents.
The website called "Free settler of Felon", shows a number of listings in Newcastle for a Mary Jones (now Bartlett), wife of Clement Bartlett, having a number of court appearances due to drunken and disorderly behaviour and possible domestic violence against her husband. All listings were dated 1837, around the time of William may have been an infant.
Just speculating but if this was his mother then perhaps his home was not a safe place to be raised if there were domestic issues and alcoholism involved, therefore this may have been the reason why the obituary states that he lost his parents when an infant???

Clement Benjamin Bartlett: Arrived on the Neptune in 1818. Clement Bartlett sentenced to transportation for life for stealing a handkerchief belonging to surgeon William Dickinson.

Elizabeth/ Mary Jones (now Bartlett): Arrived on the Diana in 1833.(side note - Name not on muster roll, Too many Jones on - arrived agd 15)?

22 May 1834 - Application to marry. Clement aged 38. Mary Jones aged 17. Register book of Christ Church Cathedral, Newcastle.

Hi again Mollipops1,

I have just found an 'Henrietta Sprie' that died at the age of 3 in 1859, Victoria (reg # 6340). I guess this might be the missing daughter.

Did you find all this info through ancestry.com????

Thanks again for your help

David Goodwin
I am sooooo thankful for your response. Thank you for taking the time to find this information. I am somewhat pleased to know that I had not made an error somewhere after all. I was beginning to think that much of my information about my 'Sprye' heritage may have been incorrect. I try to be careful and accurate with all of my research.

Thanks again

David Goodwin

Hi there Fryerning,

Thanks for the reply and the information. I do actually have that information already. Mr. Courtney Spry's son (A. Spry) was likely to be Augustus Frederick Spry who was returning from overseas with hives of bees. Adding to the family collection I assume as they were apiarists in Brisbane.

The information you wrote regarding the marriage to Barbara Jane is what has caused me frustration. It would appear that he married in Australia in 1855, then married in England in 1860, and then lived the remainder of his life back in Australia. Possible, although unlikely in my opinion. Both 'Courtenay Sprye's' have a father, Richard, who was a captain in the army. The only way to find out what went on is to find information about Barbara Jane Matthews. No luck there though. Anyway, thanks for the help.

David Goodwin

Great sleuthing, Rhonda. Reckon that is a pretty good find to match details of the elusive William.

It is a very interesting case. There are several documents relating to Clement Benjamin Bartlett here on Ancestry, but they are private, not public.

Perhaps William was a cousin, rather than a brother, but over time the story has got muddled?

I agree that if a person died aged over 100, there would definitely have been newspaper articles and an obituary. Quite often articles about 80th or 90th birthdays back then too, as they were fairly rare and quiet an achievement (even more so than they are these days!).

The George Robert BARTLETT who married Martha SAXBY was a son of Robert BARTLETT and Sarah FOSTER, i.e. George was a brother of Edward, who married Ann SAXBY. Ann was a sister of Martha. Could be where the mixup stemmed from.

Courtenay was a miner in Gympie, Queensland by the late 1860s. There are newspaper articles about a court case involving him and other miners over a claim there at NLA Trove (in fact he was involved in quite a lot of court cases over time!). They had a further 6 children in Qld, 5 sons and a daughter, including:

The Brisbane Courier, Friday 7 February 1868
BIRTH
SPRY-At the North Pine River, Mrs Spry wife of Courtenay Spry, Esq., and eldest daughter of the late Richard Grey Chambers, Esq., of Cradly Hall Herefordshire, and Wysbourne Court, Worcestershire, of a son. [this is Reynell Digby - you may have these but if not Qld bdms are online]

In February 1869, he was granted a crown land selection of 41 acres, being an island in the North Pine River. By 1875, he had a selection at Gladfield, near Maryvale. He had grand plans to be active in public office, but was not altogether a popular candidiate:

The Brisbane Courier, Saturday 2 November 1878
We mean no insinuation of mercenary motives, or venal corruptibility, when we express our delight at learning that at a meeting of electors in that classical locality, Humpybong, Mr. Courtenay Spry, in answer to the usual crucial question, declared his perfect willingness to act officially in his country's service at the rate of £1000 a year, but nothing less. We are not opposed to Mr. Spry's or anybody else's candidature. We are simply expressing our pleasure at finding a man whose deserts require auch delicate balancing that the subtraction of a farthing would turn the scale. There is a certain amount of benevolence, too, about the statement which we may as well point out, lest it be not at once patent to the general reader. [there is more!]

In 1880, Courtenay Hele Fowell Spry was appointed Magistrate of Brisbane (published in The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser on 5th July 1880, see NLA Trove). At the time of his death, he was a commission agent.

Some notices regarding his family:

Queensland Figaro, Thursday 15 August 1907
Weddings.
Aug. 3rd,-Miss Ethel Redmond, of Rosenthal, to Mr. Courtenay Spry, of Brisbane; at S. Mark's Church, Warwick. Guhr, head teacher, Linville (late of Bell), to Richard, eldest son of the late Mr. Richard Spry, of Linville, and Mrs. Spry, of Scarborough.

The Brisbane Courier, Friday 19 November 1920
Many friends will learn with regret of the death of Mr. Riichard ("Dick") Spry, eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Courtenay Hele Spry, of Brisbane, who passed away at Linville, on November 10.
Hi David

Yes, they did marry in 1855 (reg 2648). They had a daughter named Henrietta Jane, born in 1857 in Collingwood (reg 271). Then another daughter in 1859 in Muckleford named Mary (reg 929). Baby Mary died aged 1 day (reg 4670).

Sadly Barbara died in Victoria in 1859 aged only 23 (reg 4680, so not long after the baby died). Shown as daughter of Wm & Jane MATTHEWS and born in Cornwall. All of these events are registered as SPRYE.

Barbara Jane MATTHEWS arrived in Victoria aged 13 in Nov 1849 aboard 'Nelson' with her parents and siblings (Wm 35, Jane 34, James 11, Mary Harvey 8, Amelia 6, Wm Hy 4 and baby Jane).

So it seems he returned to England soon after Barbara's death and remarried there before returning to Australia by 1862, when son Richard was born (reg 15925).

There is this outward shipping record:
SPRYE C [aged] 29 NORFOLK SEP 1859 LONDON SEP 1859 006

Not sure where baby Henrietta ended up? Looks like he married the daughter of one of his father's East India Civil Service colleagues. Probably seen as an 'appropriate union'!
